Bye Borneo,Hello again Singapore
May 23, 2025 in Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C
Today its time to leave borneo .all anticipation from booking to go to the orangutans till now ..has been fulfilled 100%.
Its been hard work ,messy work ,lots of manual labour ...such as sawing bamboo, using a tree lopping gadget and hacking leaves with a machete. To say nothing of wheelbarrows of sand and grit and carrying 2 buckets of cement at once on slippy ground. Then I've also been climbing ladders ....so many new skills
Highlights included standing at the back of the Hilux jeep and going off road, sitting on the leaves we collected. The one to one boat trip to feed the orangutans on the island was a once in a lifetime
Seeing the vets operating or doing checks under sedation was really interesting!
All interactions with the orangutans were amazing..to see their dexterity despite huge hands .to see them moving around and swing on things in moving.
To experience being as close as a metre to them and see them gaze right into your eyes without flinching, was unforgettable
To become accustomed to their individual personalities was interesting.
I particularly loved the hose pipe enrichment as seeing them reach out to feel the water in a hand .some would then drink the water others would want a full shower and would scrub themselves clean ..one in particular ..Kekan ..did this ...Kekan was also very amusing to watch.. it was fascinating to see them receiving nebulisers and tolerate it
Undoubtedly the group i was with, enhanced the experience .Everyone got on and the group quickly became cohesive and effective..I hope to keep in .touch with some of them .
There were 2 couples at the Lodge today, from Macclesfield so I had a chat with them
9 of us were getting the same flight back to Singapore...so went in 3 cars
On arrival in Singapore I went into Jewel shopping mall to find
Baggage storage and send a parcel of clothes that are now not needed ..I pray these do get home with DHL as the parcel of new and expensive clothes i sent from Japan on 25th March still hasn't turned up ...I think it's lost for good
Finally arrived at the Crowne plaza hotel terminal 3 Singapore airport, only to have issues with my card ,the banking app and the WiFi...eventually sorted .I picked up a ceasar salad from. reception before going to my room, realising it had been 7. 45 pm.when I got off the plane and I was now 9.45pm....so ceasar salad in bed !
It's been a great experience...I went not knowing what to expect but ready to embrace what came my way ....and there was a lot of new things to learn and to do
I know Im not done with borneo and orangutans....we did visit the baby house ,but there is a different project that has the babies and forest school where they learn skills to go back in the wild .The accommodation with cold showers is bit of a sticky point ,but it's so hot maybe it's not an issue
WiFi allowance after today may be tricky as I have some sort of 60days fair usage or something 😳 😅Read more
