    Our Trip Begins

    28. April 2017 in Australien ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

    We left on Friday the 28th and since then we've driven 2200 km averaging 314 km per day. We have also, by the end of the day, spent 29 hours in the car averaging 4 hours and 8 1/2 minutes per day.
    It was sad saying goodbye to Rosie my cat, Rogan the family cat and Zack Ben's dog but are very glad that Izzy is there to look after them.
    So far we've spent most our time on the road but when not on the road we've managed to go to our friends house in Melbourne, go to the MCG to watch Carlton Vs Sydney ( Carlton won ) and go to Taronga Zoo in Dubbo NSW.
    The first night when we were on the boat none of us had a very good sleep. The next night we stayed at our friends house in Melbourne and from there we headed up to Narrandera and stayed at Old Brewery Flats on the Murrumbidgee river, on the first day of driving we had made it to NSW. The border between Victoria and NSW is the Murray River we stopped at the border for lunch and a fish. The next day we had a short drive to Dubbo. We stopped at Dubbo for a rest day, on our rest day we went to the zoo. At the zoo we went to lots of talks about the animals. We also got to see some animals getting fed. Our dad told us that we could pick any animal to do a mini project on, I chose Asian Elephants. As we were driving up from Dubbo we saw some white stuff on the side of the road, we discovered that it was cotton and learnt a bit about cotton farming. We also saw lots of big trucks with cotton bales on them and some cool models of the planets in our solar system. Last night we stayed at road side stop in Goondiwindi and today we are driving up to our Uncles farm in Boompa.    Weiterlesen

    Lots Of Stops This Week

    It's week two and we've driven 3424km averaging 244.6km per day. We have also, by the end of the day, spent 48 hours in the car at 3 and a half hours per day.
    This week we only spent spent two days driving, even though one of the days was 9 hours long, the other one was only 4 and a half hours.
    This week we spent three whole days at our Uncles farm and two days that weren't whole. On Thursday we had really good nachos for tea. On Friday we went swimming in our Uncles creek, well its not our Uncles creek it just runs though their property. The creek had risen a lot after Cyclone Debbie and we found another secret pool. In the secret pool there was a log sticking out of the water. We sat on the log and wrestled each other our cousin Tom was the best. That night we had pizza for tea and it was really good. To next day we played on the trampoline a lot and went out for tea. For tea I had steak and salad. The next day on Sunday we went to the dump because they don't have rubbish bins and they needed to get rid of the rubbish. Later that day we watched Guardians Of The Galaxy and taught Tom and Ava how to play charades. We didn't have tea until about 7:00 because we were having a roast and we put it on late. On Monday we left early because we had 9 hours to drive that day.
    We stayed at Cape Hillsbrough National Park for two nights. We saw lots of wallabies on the beach early in the morning.
    The next day we had a short drive up to Townsville. At Townsville we bordered a ferry to Magnetic Island. On the island we went snorkelling and fishing. We also fed some parrots. We stayed at Koala Village in Horseshoe Bay. We went snorkelling at Florence Bay. Ben caught the first fish of the trip and I caught three fish that we didn't keep. Today we are driving up to Cairns to meet some friends of ours to drive Cape York with us.    Weiterlesen

    We're In Cape York

    It's week three and we've driven 4900km averaging 233km per day. We have also, by the end of the day spent 72 hours in the car averaging 3 hours and 24 minutes per day.
    In Cairns we stayed at a caravan park for two nights. On the full day Mary, Mum and I went shopping and the Ben, Dad and Henk went to some camping shops. After Cairns we drove up to Laura, a town in Cape York. That night we stayed next to a river that we could swim in. After we set the camper up we went for a swim. The next day we started on the dirt road. We made it to Coen that day and again there was a creek we could swim in. That night we put an opera net in to try and catch some yabbies. At first we only got one, then we moved it to deeper water and the boys went to check it after we were in bed and had caught a big catfish so they had to move it again. In the morning we checked it again and this time we had heaps. Altogether we had 20 yabbies and 1 cherabin (a fresh water prawn.) The next day we drove up to Weipa. Weipa is a mining town, it mines Bauxite which is used to make Aluminium. When you are in the mining area traffic lights randomly pop up every where. Once we saw a big mine truck drive past when we were stopped at the mine lights. We also saw a big train carrying Bauxite. On Thursday we went to Pennyfarther beach. It was hot and there was rubbish everywhere.Weiterlesen

    We Made It To The Tip

    On Friday the boys went on a fishing charter and we went on a walk around some man made lakes to see if we see anything interesting. For tea we had the Queenfish that Henk caught. The next day on Saturday we left Weipa and headed to a campsite on the Southern Bypass Road near the Heathlands Ranger Station. On the way we stopped at Fruit Bat Falls. At Fruit Bat we jumped off the waterfall (it is only about 1.5 metres tall.) That night we stayed at a truck stop on the Southern Bypass Road near the Heathlands Ranger Station. We had chops cooked on the fire pot for tea. At Mutee Head we met 2 kids named Lincoln and Zara, we played with them for the rest of the day. We stayed at Mutee Head for 2 nights. On the day we were leaving Mutee Head we went up to see a World War II Radar Tower. The next day we drove to Seisia, we stayed five nights. On Wednesday we got up at 5:00 o'clock to drive out to The Tip for sunrise. We didn't see it be has it was cloudy. At The Tip there was lots of plaques. They were memorials of people. When got back to the car park we made breakfast and ate on the beach. After breakfast we drove a little bit down the road to the old abandoned lodge to look for an old bird watching tower that used to part of the lodge. We didn't end up finding it. After going to The Tip we went to the Croc Tent. At the Croc Tent I bought a pen with Cape York Australia written on it and a badge for my Scout camp blanket. Ben bought a cap with Cape York written on it. And we also got a Cape York ruler. After being at Croc Tent we drove to Punsand Bay. At Punsand Bay we went for a swim in the pool, Lincoln and Zara were there so we played with them. We had wood fired pizza for tea. The next day we went out in the boat for a couple hours and sorted out when we were going to do the Torres Strait Tour. On Friday we didn't do much, Ben and I did some school work and played some games. Henk and Dad had gone fishing the Jacky Jacky River.Weiterlesen

    Goodbye Cape York

    On Saturday we went on a tour to the Torres Strait Islands. We went to Friday, Thursday and Horn Island. On Friday Is we visited a Pearl shop. Friday Is is only small. Next we went to Thursday Is (more commonly know as TI to the locals.) On TI we had some time to look around. We went to a gallery type shop, a souvenir shop and we also went and listened to someone speak about the referrendom. A about 11:00 o'clock we went to a cafe called Uncle Frankie's to go on a taxi tour of TI. On the tour we went to a fort called Greenhill Fort that was built because they predicted an attack from the Russian, the attack never came. There is three cannons and only one of them ever fired, the only reason it fired was because a pearl diving ship didn't identify itself until it had been fired at. It was identified as friendly afterwards. Next we went and had a look at some of the Japanese pearl divers graves. After that Frank the taxi driver drove us to the most northern hotel in Australia. There we had lunch with the rest of the group from the tour. Everybody had fish and chips. After TI we went to Horn Is. On Horn Is we went to the museum. There was lots of interesting information about World War II and pearl divers. On the way back to the mainland we saw 2 crocodiles a small one and a big one. On Sunday we drove to Bramwell Station. On the way there we stopped at Fruit Bat again. We arrived at Bramwell at abut 4:00 o'clock. When we arrived we set up camp and went exploring. We found a little creek at the bottom of the campsite. Zara and Lincoln were there as well. It was Zara's birthday the night we stayed at Bramwell. At Bramwell there was 500 head of cattle they were noisey all night. At Bramwell we went to a buffet, the man there told us that we won't be able to have dessert if we don't eat some salad. There was sausages, steak, rissoles, shepherds pie, potato bake, pumpkin, cauliflower and broccoli bake, steamed veggies and salads. For dessert there was sticky date pudding and custard. After that there was some live music. After Bramwell we went to Laura again and stayed the same camp site. The next day we drove to Mareeba. At Mareeba went stocked up on supplies. After stocking up we went to Emerald Creek Falls for a look, you can't stay there over night. We stayed at Davey Creek Falls for the night. In the morning we got up and packed up so we could go down to the waterfall for a little bit. After looking at the water fall we went too the swimming holes. That night we stayed at Lake Eachem. In the afternoon we went for a walk round the lake we had tea there. After tea we went on a "spotlighting walk", we didn't see much only a long nose bandicoot. We also heard what we think was a tree falling down. The next day we went to a big crater. We also went to some hot springs. It was a "cold" day so they were very enjoyable. That night was our last night with Henk and Mary. We stayed in a gravel pit.Weiterlesen

    UNDARA VOLCANIC PARK

    On Friday the 2nd of June we arrived in Undara Volcanic Park. We arrived quite early and set up. That day we went for a walk to Flat Rock and Circle View. At Circle View we climbed up on top of the rocks and could see for ages in every direction.
    That night we went to a fireside quiz.
    The next morning we got up considerably early to walk around Kalkani (cow-car-knee) Crater. It was very windy on top of the crater but very sheltered when we went down inside. There was lots of information boards explaining how craters form.
    It was about 1.8 km round the rim plus a bit extra to get to the rim.
    The Kalkani Crater is in the Undara Volcanic Park and is years old. Kalkani Crater was formed by a build up of pressure under the earth this cause an explosion . The explosion causes molten and solid rock to be pushed up to the surface and pile on top of each other. This creates the walls of the crater.
    There are multiple different types of volcanoes. Two examples are a Shield Explosion and a Explosion. A Shield Explosion is when the lava just oozes out causing a flatter and slower explosion, unlike Kalkani which was an Explosion.
    Volcanic rocks found in the area include Massive Pink Granite and Basalt.

    After Kalkani we went on a Lava Tube tour, our guide was Wes. Wes told us all about the founder of the tours and how they discovered the Lava Tubes. The tour went into the Lava Tubes. In the Lava Tubes we saw a Southern Boobook Owl. Wes stopped a fair bit to tell us about some different things. The tour itself was very interesting.
