Sunday 28 June A Romp around Rothesay

Well, we found the little distillery and had to taste some of their gins and a rum. To be honest, we decided to stick with good old Bombay Sapphire and Kraken. ‘Nuff said.’
Just across the road was Rothesay Castle which, as English Heritage members, we were allowed in for free. Barbara was thrilled to learn of the major connection between the Stewart Clan and the Scottish royalty, all linked to this lovely old ruin. It is being kept beautifully and we would both recommend a visit.

Steve was trying hard to dig up memories of runs ashore in Rothesay. One that sprung to mind was when HMS SWIFTSURE (1978) came to anchor in the bay, only to lose the anchor and cable because it was not secured in the clench. Steve seems to remember that the navigator was not happy, nor was the Captain, Commander Don Mitchell. Anyway, Steve seems to remember the submarine secured to an Admiralty mooring and we got to go ashore.
Another run ashore happened there in 1983 in HMS SUPERB. No anchor frolics that time, but a lot of beer throwing (a game played by the locals, it seemed!) Happy days, only 43 years ago!!!Read more
