    Getting to Italy

    October 18 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

We left Florida at 7pm and arrived in Trieste Italy around 2pm the next day after a short layover in Frankfurt GE. No problem with the flights and we were happy to see that our luggage arrived with us (unlike our trip last year). We didn't sleep much on the plane, so we weren't operating at peak performance. We were both laughing at some of our questionable decision making. Our hotel room is very nice and conveniently located near the cruise port and popular sites.Read more

  • Trieste

    October 18 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

We really enjoyed our stay in Trieste. It is much less touristy compared to other places in Italy we have visited previously. Today, we attended church in the Trieste ward. The members were very nice and some of them helped with translation, which was nice. There was a Sister there visiting from CA who served in the Milano mission the same years as me. I didn't recognize her name but that was fun talking about our mission experiences.
We went sightseeing in the afternoon. The main stop was the Miramare castle. Turns out this was more of a mansion than a castle since it was built in the middle 1800's. It was quite an amazing place with some interesting history. The gardens around the castle were amazing.
In the evening, we enjoyed a nice dinner and sightseeing in areas near the waterfront.

  • Katakalone/Olympia

    October 22, Mediterranean Sea ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

What a fun day! We took a train from Katakolone to Olympia to see the ruins and museums associated with the original Olympic games. The site and history associated with the ruins was amazing. We could have stayed a lot longer but had to get back to the ship. We left enough time for a delicious gyro and Greek Gelato.Read more

  • Athens Greece

    October 23 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

What an amazing place to visit. I didn't realize how huge Athens is. The Acropolis must have been quite the place back when Alexander the Great was in power. The architectural detail that went into the Parthenon was fascinating to learn. Things like adding a slight tilt to the colums, a very slight rounded slope to the floor and tapering of columns all to make it more visually striking. A lot of the sculptures are missing, they were plundered and now can be found in museums around the world. The museum here in Athens has a great collection to help appreciate the artwork that was once here.Read more

  • Kusadasi Turkey/ Ephesas

    October 24 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

We had a personalized tour of the ancient city of Ephasis. We walked the streets and saw the theater where the apostle Paul preached Christianity hundreds of years ago. This was an amazing place to visit. We also stopped at a place that does hand-made pottery and another place that creates very detailed Turkish carpets.Read more

  • Istanbul Turkey

    October 25 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

This day turned out to be a bit more of a challenge compared to other stops so far. We were planning on visiting Hagia Sophia but it was totally crushed with people and the entrance fee was expensive. Instead of pressing ahead we made a very good choice to visit Topkapi Palace instead. The palace was pretty amazing with fascinating history. Among many sacred artifacts at the palace were the staff of Moses, the sword of Daniel, and bone fragments from John the Baptist. We did a lot of walking today, about 25k steps.Read more

  • Corfu Greece

    October 27 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

This was a fun and relaxing stop. We took the Hop On Hop Off bus from the port to see some of the attractions on the Island. This included a walk down to the Panagia Monestary, climbing to the lighthouse on top of the old fortress, and sightseeing along the streets of Old Town. We enjoyed a nice Greek meal and found some amazing pastries to finish off the day.Read more

  • Bari Italy

    October 28 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

We are back in Italy for the last port of call for this cruise. This was another relaxing and fun stop for us. Today, we stopped by the Cathedral of St. Nicholas (the one that inspired our Santa Clause), saw the Cathedral of San Sabino, watched some 'pasta making Nonnas', then did some final shopping along the streets of old town. Tomorrow, we end our cruise back at Trieste, where we will begin our trip back home. What a fun cruise this turned out to be.Read more
