    Stormy Surprise

    October 9, 2022 in Iceland ⋅ 🌧 39 °F

Today there was supposed to be a storm in the morning. So we had a sleep-in. Woke up and the sun was bright and the sky was clear and beautiful. So we decided to go do some sightseeing after our campsite owners said the storm wouldn’t be here until 4:00pm. Leaving plenty of time to go back the 1 hour drive to the place we missed the night before because it was too dark, too cold, and too late!! As we drove, it felt that the wind was getting stronger but we persisted. 57 minutes into the drive and 2km from the two stops we were dying to see (diamond beach and a glacier lake) there was an erratic truck driving towards us flashing their lights. I pulled over to ask if they were ok. Low and behold, they were park rangers. Telling us that the road is closed. And to evacuate the area asap. So after a bit of internal weeping we drove back to where we just came from. But since it was forecasting up to 110mph+ winds and since it was our anniversary. We decided to pull off at this cute farm hotel. They were weird at first. Like we were their only guests. They made us dinner, very costly dinner, and we took a bottle of wine to our room. I kept looking out the window of our room as the clouds looked a bit weird. Well, that’s because they were the beginnings of a light show in the sky!!! A first glimpse of the Aurora Borealis. We wanted to see them outside and saw they were getting brighter. However the wind was also getting stronger. It was like getting punched in the face but we kept on enjoying the show. Till we had enough and went back into the room to enjoy from the comforts of an 85°F sauna room that had two twin beds pushed together for couples. From there we enjoyed about 10 more mins of this light show. Sleeping was difficult after resting all day, watching American football and 90-110mph winds pelting your windows as you tried to fall asleep. But, all in all. It was a fun way to spend our 13th year anniversary together.Read more
