    Pit stop in Hong-Kong

    26 мая 2015 г., Гонконг ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Landed a couple of hours ago in HK and had my first meal on the asian continent: scrambled eggs, macaroni and ham soup, and a croissant (not as foreign as expected). I'm just watching the planes fly in before mine departs in an hour (that's the airbus I'll be taking in the picture). HK is definitely different than Canada but it's still pretty western, kind of like Toronto but way more massive. Only one flight left and I'll be in Singapore!Читать далее

    Salutations from Singapore

    26 мая 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Finally got to my residence after a 3.5 hour flight, 1 hour subway ride across the city, a 10 minute cab-ride that ended up in an hour-long backtrack walk. Today I learned that when you don't exactly know where you're going, ask MANY people for directions. Whether it's the officer at the neighbourhood police post, a construction worker on his lunch break, or a highschool secretary, it's always good to get a second opinion to make sure you're (still) going in the right direction.

My room is fantastic: small but comfortable, furnished with a double bed, night table, two (!) desks with chairs, functional AC and fan, and more than enough closet space. The view from my 12th-story balcony is fantastic (see pictures below)! Bathroom, kitchen and living area are shared with the rest of the floor (up to 5 people, I know there are at least 3 others already).

I just got back from a little excursion at a nearby shopping mall and picked up an outlet adapter for my laptop. It is ridiculous how many food shops there are in that place, probably more than I could cover if I only ate there my entire stay! Tomorrow's mission is to buy a towel and an unbrella and do some more exploring. Time to go eat some hawker food (for those of you who aren't familiar: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_centre
    )!

Day 2: more exploring...and getting lost

    27 мая 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Today started off with a bowl of laksa, one of Singapore's signature dishes. I then headed out on the path along the Jurong River to find a shopping mall. The fastest way to cross is through the Chinese gardens, where I climbed the twin towers (no, not the ones in LOTR) and read up on Confucius and other Chinese heroes. I know this makes me sound incredibly uncultured, but Mulan isn't just a Disney movie.

I was able to pick up my toiletries at the mall, which was actually a mega-mall comprised of three Eaton-Centre-sized malls linked together, (one of which I didn't even have the time to explore). I also toured some more of the city and got lost again, so I think I'm going to stick near the MRT (subway) stations for the time being. I also met some of my floor mates: a girl doing her PhD in Biology at NTU (same school I'll be working at) and her husband who just came back from Rio (he's a cargo ship navigator). They seem very friendly and I think we'll get along fine. Maybe tomorrow I'll take the MRT with her and get a campus tour.

Day 3: more adventures and exploring

    28 мая 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Today I decided to take my mom's advice and go check out the Singapore Rowing Association (SRA). It is located on the edge of the Pandam Reservoir which provides water to the city's inhabitants (and incidentally a great area to row). It took a while to get there: first a MRT ride 3 stations east and then a 5km bus ride. An interesting part about transportation in Singapore is that the fares are variable, unlike in Canada where bus/metro tickets are fixed rates. Every station here has tables of fees for different distances and passenger types; there is usually a flat rate of around 0.70$ and about 0.10$ per additional km. The SRA itself wasn't too exciting (unless you're a rower, in which case it was phenomenal), basically just a bunch of shells and oars of all sizes: single, double, quad and eight. The reservoir provided a cool breeze as I walked along it to get back into town, which was well appreciated considering it hit 42C with humidity today.

After lunch I picked up a cable to upload pictures from my camera onto my laptop in yet another megalodon of a shopping centre. The highlight though was dinner, pictures of which are included below. It consisted of noodles with mushrooms in chili sauce and a bowl of soup containing minced meat, crab and fish balls. As I was served the cook cracked an egg into the broth and then lit a candle under the bowl. It was very tasty and by far the coolest thing I have eaten yet. While on the subject, here are a few culinary tips I have picked up and would like to share:

    1. Pointing to something is the universal sign for "I want that"; comes in very handy when you can't pronounce/don't what you're ordering.

    2. If the cook asks you something and you don't know what they said, just nod and smile. Chances are they just asking you if you want all the ingredients (fine for me since I'm not picky) or extra chili sauce.

    3. If there is something in your food that you don't think you should eat, show your bowl to the cook. If it's a stone or something inedible, you'll get another free meal.

    4. Do NOT stabs your chopsticks in rice, or anything for that matter. Everyone will stare at you weirdly. Same thing goes for eating with your hands, unless your a eating Indian food, in which case it's okay (make sure they are clean first though).

    Day 4: NTU campus tour

    29 мая 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Today I met my supervising professor italian Dr. Cesare Soci (believe it or not, I'm actually here to work). He showed me around the state of the facilities and introduced me to his other graduate students. After eating lunch in their canteen I spent the afternoon exploring the rest of campus. It is so big though that I only managed to cover about a third of the map in 3 hours. They have a beautiful campus and one of the biggest sports rec facilities I have ever seen. I meant to take more pictures but both my ipod and camera died so I'll have to go again sometime just so that you get an idea of it all. In the meantime you can always check out the google maps street view if you're interested. Hope you all enjoy your Friday, bye for now!Читать далее

    Day 5: Exploring Chinatown

    30 мая 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Today I got to see one of Singapore's most colorful areas: Chinatown. I got there early before the markets opened so I could get a good look at everything before it got too busy. I spend the morning strolling through the streets while tailors and various merchants assailed me for my business. This was definitely overwhelming at first as it not the way I'm used to shopping in Canada. I also visited a mosque, a Hindu temple, a Buddhist temple and a Christian church. The temples are by far the most ornate of these buildings, decorated with brightly painted statues and offerings for their various deities.

I had lunch in yet another hawker centre, but not before visiting the wet market in the basement of the building. There you could buy any and all foodstuff, from fruits of veggies (some of which I have never seen before), meat and fish, herbs and spices, fresh noodles and dumplings and all sorts of other things. I'll upload those pictures on another post since there is a maximum of 6 per post. I ate a "shark nugget" sweet noodle soup, after which I relaxed by watching some old men play checkers and Chinese chess. I was going to play a game myself, but when I saw money being exchanged after games and heated arguments over move take-backs (yikes, these guys are way too serious!), I decided to stay out of trouble and move on.

I visited another church, mosque, temple and shrine and then made my way to the Singapore City Gallery, where I saw exhibits spanning the city's history from its foundation in the 1800s as well as plans and displays of upcoming infrastructure projects on the island. Before I headed home I wanted to also visit Singapore's oldest temple (now turned into a museum and heritage site) as well as the Majestic opera house but sadly they were both closed for renovations. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to come back next year.

Day 6: CBD and Colonial District (Part1)

    31 мая 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

If you want to have a good day, start it off with a bowl of piping-hot laksa: noodles, bean sprouts, sliced fish, muscles and deep-fried scrambled egg (or at least that's what it tastes like), all in a spicy yet creamy broth seasoned with coriander and chili paste. It's a Singaporean signature dish and is now officially my favorite breakfast food! I spent most of the morning making my way through the Central Business District, but it was difficult to orient myself at times with all the skyscrapers looming over. I eventually stumbled upon the luxurious Fullerton Hotel, which featured a jade waterfall trickling into a koi fish pond, as well as what I think was a Model 290 Imperial Bosendorfor concert grand piano. I played a few songs (only Chopin though so as not to disrupt the atmosphere or attract too much attention to myself) and it was by far the nicest-sounding piano I have ever touched!

Exiting the hotel and crossing the street, I entered the tourist-packed Merlion Park. After taking pictures of the Marina Bay Sands Casino, Singapore Flyer and Merlion statue, which is a cross between Disney's Mufasa and Ariel (see next post's pictures), I stuck around for a bit to watch the DFS dragon-boat races which happened to be taking place.

I then crossed the river onto the northern bank and visited the Asian Civilizations Museum. Besides the wonderful exhibits depicting the various influences on Singaporean culture, I listened to a live performance put on by about a dozen young children playing various traditional Asian instruments. By then I was starving so I grabbed a bit to eat and then started to search for a good napping spot.

I found a nice shaded area in a park near a war memorial. When I woke up I crossed the street to the beautiful St. Andrew's Cathedral and was able to make their afternoon service. After that I perused through the Colonial District admiring the architecture until I hit Clarke Quay. Apparently this area has a buzzing nightlife and is best visited after dark. I spent the rest of the afternoon strolling farther up north toward the Canning Park area, but most of the sights were closed, which is why there will hopefully be a Part 2 to this area. I took that as my queue to head back, tomorrow marks the beginning of my research at NTU and so is a big day, hopefully things aren't too busy and that posts still make it your way!

Day 7: Colonial District (Part 2)

    1 июня 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

When I woke up this morning I thought I was going to NTU to obtain my student pass, first day at work, etc. But then I realized that today is Vesak Day, a Buddhist celebration and public holiday, and that my appointment at the university isn't until tomorrow. So I bring to you part 2 of my explorations of the colonial district.

I started by visiting a few temples to see what this Vesak Day business was all about. The streets were packed with people giving offering off fruit and flowers, burning joss sticks (incense) while praying and rubbing the golden buddha's face and belly for good luck. I wanted to go see either the National Singapore Museum or the Singapore Art Museum across the street, but both were closed for the civic holiday. So instead I visited a few churches and then made my way to Raffle's Hotel, where I enjoyed one of Asia's most iconic beverages: the Singapore Sling. This drink is so popular (especially among tourists) that it has made Raffle's hotel the world's largest gin purchaser, requiring over 200,000 bottles of it every year.

The tour guide I was following recommended me to go to the shopping centres in Suntec City and Marina Square, but I wasn't quite up to it so I just walked around Marina Bay instead. I must stay the views here are spectacular and I hope to see them again when the sun goes down and the lights turn on. Tomorrow I'm going to NTU (for real this time), but I hope to take some pictures to give you all an idea of the beautiful campus.

Day 7: food, drink and sights

    1 июня 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Green plate: nasi lemak, consisting of rice, chicken wing, over-easy egg and a side of cucumber and pine nuts. This is the standard Singaporean working-man's breakfast.

    Singapore Sling:
    1 1⁄2 ounces gin
    1⁄2 ounce cherry heering
    1⁄4 ounce Cointreau liqueur
    1⁄4 ounce benedictine
    4 ounces pineapple juice
    1⁄2 ounce lime juice
    1⁄3 ounce grenadine
    1 dash bitters
I will be learning how to make this drink asap.

Next is claypot rice: absolutely delicious but it takes a while to make. Also beware the bones, I swear they just chop up a whole chicken and toss it in.

P.S. Yes, that is a soccer field floating on the river in the second-last pic.

NTU SRI Opening Ceremonies / Orientation

    3 июня 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Today officially marked the beginning of my summer research internship at NTU. There wasn't much going on yesterday, I mostly filled out some paperwork (sorry for leaving you all hanging like that). After an opening speech and a some presentations on general information and campus security, we had a buffet lunch and got to meet some of the other students. Most of them range from sophomores to recent graduates, although about a third of the ~40 students are from Clemson University in South Carolina. I've met people from Malaysia, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Sweden, France, the Philippines, Zimbabwe, and of course USA and Canada. We were chosen from over 1000 applicants worldwide and part of me still can't believe I actually made it.

The rest of the afternoon was taken up by a guided tour of the campus. I already knew about most of the places we visited, but it was still good to familiarize myself with the surroundings. We also checked out some neat areas like the Art & Media Design Building which had a grass roof (see picture below). I also got to know a few people: in the grass rooftop picture, the girl in black on the left (from the Philippines) wants to move in with the rest of her family in Saskatoon (where I did my research last summer), while the one to her right in the blue-and-white skirt (from Korea) actually just completed a semester at King's College at UWO! By the time I got back home I was starving, so I had a big bowl of Mee Kuah (red curry noodle soup) and a plate onion thosai (flaky bread with dipping sauces). This is Indian Muslim food and love the flavors (and lack of bones). Tomorrow I have to get a few more things done for work, but hopefully I'll have some time to do a bit of exploring!

    Singapore bureaucracy / Kampong Glam

    5 июня 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

So today I "completed the formalities" of obtaining my student pass at the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, which was an instructive lesson on how Singapore manages immigration. After paying my student pass fee at one of their eOutlets, I was directed to the building's 4th floor, where I was ushered through 7 different counters, each of which verified the dozen or so required documents I presented them without losing a single one. There were thumb scans, eye scans, more thumb scans...there was a peaceful sense of confidant organization amidst the chaos of hundreds of people waiting in queue. I was in and out in less than an hour and am now fully prepared for my stay in Singapore.

After having some Char Kway Teow at a nearby hawker centre, I spent the evening strolling through Kampong Glam, the Arabic and Malay district. There I saw some of the most beautiful mosques and finest fabric stores I have seen thus far,the latter carrying everything from delicate cashmere scarves to soft silk robes and pyjamas. It was also the first area where I saw people smoking hookah on the outdoor patios of restaurants. The highlight though was walking down Bughis Street, where they had an open market where you could get nickle-and-dime-priced t-shirts, belts, wallets, watches, accessories and all sorts of trinkets. I think I'll definitely be going back there again, if only to try the Malay Muslim food.

    Hello Little India

    7 июня 2015 г., Сингапур ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Yesterday I spent some time in one of Singapore's iconic corners: Little India. The sights, smells, sounds and tastes made it a wonderfully unique experience of the senses. After visiting the crowded wet market in the morning, I made my way through the streets and open shops. The prices of the bargain shopping outlets rival those of even Chinatown, but here is where you go if you want to get clothes, fabrics, spices and jewellery instead of trinkets and gadgets. I also checked out many religious buildings, many of which are neighboring or across the street from each other. It's pleasant to see so many different cultures living together in peace and respect for one another, truly showing how different people can still live in harmony. Today I plan to go down Orchard road, another open shopping market and tourist hotspot. Chow for now!

P.S. The last picture is of a food called black carrot cake. It comes in two varieties (black and white, that is, with or without sauce) and is absolutely delicious, although it is neither cake nor is it made of carrots! I suspect is has eggs and thick noodles in it, but I'll have to try some more to really put my finger on it.

Here are some pictures of various Buddhist and Hindu temples, notice they are much more colourful and ornate.
