Cartagena

Cartagena was our introduction to Colombia - and what a welcome! The city was colorful, sweltering (49° with humidity...), and overflowing with life, music and noise on the streets. On a walking tour, we also learned more about the city's role as a gateway for colonization (and slavery) in South America. For example, we learned about Palenqueras, Afro-Colombian women from the first free village on the continent who traditionally sold fruit from head baskets. We loved the beautiful colonial architecture and Caribbean cuisine. The many hustlers on the street trying to sell everything from hats to beer to more illicit products... Less so. However, the people were as warm and friendly as the thermometer and we were excited to see more of the country!

Cartagena war unsere Wilkommen in Kolumbien - und was für ein Empfang! Die Stadt war farbenfroh, schwül (49° mit Luftfeuchtigkeit...) und überfüllt mit Leben, Musik und Lärm auf den Straßen. Bei einem Rundgang erfuhren wir auch mehr über die Rolle der Stadt als Tor zur Kolonialisierung (und Sklaverei) in Südamerika. So lernten wir beispielsweise die Palenqueras kennen, afrokolumbianische Frauen aus dem ersten freien Dorf des Kontinents, die traditionell Früchte aus Kopfkörben verkauften. Wir waren begeistert von der schönen Kolonialarchitektur und der karibischen Küche. Die vielen Hustler auf der Straße, die versuchen, alles zu verkaufen, von Hüten über Bier bis hin zu eher illegalen Produkten... Nicht so sehr. Aber die Menschen waren so warm und freundlich wie das Thermometer, und wir freuten uns darauf, mehr von dem Land zu sehen! Czytaj więcej
