Day 3 Dampier Peninsula Tour

Visiting Beagle Bay aboriginal community ‘pearl’ church. Cygnet Bay pearl farm with newly hatched, very large pearl. Sadly it was flawed so only valued at $263.

Day 3 Dampier Peninsula cont’d

Lombardino aboriginal community. 30 residents, elders run the community so no police. Must have a job to live there. Make their money from a caravan park on their land, a roads contract, ownership of the airport which gains massive profits from refuelling, and a big roadhouse.

Debbie the guide was a laugh.

Day 5 - Lacepede Islands

First day out in the zodiacs. Went to Lacepede Islands. Saw a croc, lots of Brown Boobies (18000 paired couples), plenty of sea turtles, and welcomed home with a very rare experience of a young whale showing itself in the middle of all the zodiacs. Day 6 - Montgomery Reef (am)

As the huge tides drop the reef slowly appears and until the tide goes up again water cascades down. Lots of green sea turtles use this area for breeding.

Day 7 - Horizontal Falls

First the horizontal falls at low tide - flowing well. Then we passed it again later when the tide had risen. Such a beautiful spot.

Amazing colours, very busy place. Another ship, yachts, seaplane non stop,

Rock formations are 1.7 billion years old and were once flat land. The pressure of two land masses meeting caused the land to tilt vertically and become mountains of rock. One side is the old original rock from the bottom 1.7 billion yo & the other side the youngest rock 1.2 billion yo.

Headed back via the Horizontal Falls at high tide. Very calm and only flowing slightly.Okumaya devam et

Day 6 - Aboriginal Rock Paintings (pm)

Welcome ceremony at Freshwater Cove then a long walk to view 65000 yo rock art. Took the walk back with Neil (the aboriginal guide) so had the chance to ask a few questions one on one. When someone dies they take their bodies to the top of the hill and leave them until there are just bones left. The bones are wrapped and take to a nearby island (which he pointed out) and buried with all of their ancestors there. He named all of the snakes they get - it was a very long list and our top 5 most venomous were mentioned. Needless to say I didn’t look up from where I was waking from that point forward.Okumaya devam et

Day 10 - Careening Bay

Boab Tree with inscription from HMC Mermaid 1820, when it was damaged and taking on water so the claimed the area, fixed the ship, and sailed back to Sydney.

The boab was a source of water, food, and shelter.

Also a bower nest built by the male bower bird. The more impressive he can make it, the more chance to attract a mate - shells, feathers, berries, leaves, anything he can find.Okumaya devam et

Day 11 - Vansittart Bay & Jar Island

Different style of rock art - Gwion Gwion. Dates back at least 30,000 years but no aboriginal has ever identified their origins. These are one of the oldest depictions of human figures in the World.

C53 plane wreck on the salt planes of the Anjo Peninsula. All survived. It’s believed the pilot set his compass to 43 degrees instead of 23 and was lost.Okumaya devam et
