    Arrived in Vilnius

    June 1, 2018 in Lithuania ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Started off early as problems on M25 but arrived in plenty of time. Plane due to fly at 7pm so had early meal. Unfortunately the flight was delayed and we started off at about 8.20 arriving in Vilnius at 11.30 pm English time and 1.30 Lithuanian time. The hotel though is meters away from the very quiet airport, with a ver pleasant room. Just here for one night and looking forward to exploring tomorrow.Read more

    Day 2 in Vilnius

    June 2, 2018 in Lithuania ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

Had a late sleep in after a late night arrival and had breakfast in the hotel at 11am. Caught the no 88 bus to Vilnius old town, then with the help of google maps found the Realhouse B and B. We hoped to leave our bags with them but our accommodation was ready so they gave us the key straight away. The studio flat is great. Bathroom, kitchenette, dining table, microwave, Fridge/freezer etc, very comfortable bed and lots of storage. Tea, Coffee, sugar etc supplied. Much better than a hotel than a hotel. Delighted! Went out to explore and found the market we had seen from the bus. At the market, bought some local breads and cheeses ( one with fennel seeds was especially tasty), fruit and a strange cake that looks like a mountainous landscape. Thought about eating our lunch in a local park, but rather too many aggressive looking pigeons, so added wine and water to our purchases popped back to our accommodation to enjoy the feast.
After lunch and then went exploring. Went to see the KGB Museum but it had closed early today and closed tomorrow as it is Father’s Day here on the 3rd. Looked at the university building and the palace and walked by the river and stopped for a drink on the way back to the accommodation. Quick shower and change and out to a local Mexican restaurant! Portions were huge. Walked to the main tourist area afterwards and it was like being in London although £bizarrely quite a lot of people were speaking English, even though it wasn’t their first language. Great day.

    Day 3 Vilnius

    June 3, 2018 in Lithuania ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After a lazy breakfast delivered to our room, (Delicious selection of meat , cheese, eggs and pickles with warm rolls, fruit juice, Yoghurts and Jams) we set off in the opposite direction to yesterday. First walked up to the viewing point on a hill overlooking Vilnius then took a rather steep path down to a small river, and walked through a scenic area with 3 lovely lakes. We saw the sign to a caravan/ camper van park and wondered if that was where Vicky and Will would have stayed. Walked to the old town and looked around the cobbled streets an quaint buildings. There was a long procession singing hymns which was heading towards the church. This was for the Father’s Day service, and was fun to watch and hear. Sadly it also meant that several museums and attractions were closed but we looked at them from the outside. Treated ourselves to a black ice cream! Tastier than it looks as the colour is allegedly from vanilla seeds but who knows. We went into the cathedral (not closed) and outside was a big music stage where some unknown (to us) bands were performing. We then walked to the Cat Cafe where shoes had to be covered and hands washed before going in for the protection of the 15 cats living in the large cafe. There were cat baskets, claiming frames and toys and some cats just slept and others were happy to be petted or played with. Cold beetroot soup was Sue’s choice for lunch accompanied by the cats of course. We then walked the scenic route through the outskirts of Vilnius, back to the accommodation for a well earned rest. Went back to the old town where we had a traditional Lithuanian meal sitting in a garden by a fountain, then walked back to the newer part for an evening drink.Read more

    Day 4 in Vilnius

    June 4, 2018 in Lithuania ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

After a lay in (another late night) we our own breakfast from what we had left in the kitchen. We left our bags in the reception office and set off to the old town to see a few of the sights we had missed. Still sadly no go for museums etc as Monday is the usual closure day. Went to the presidential palace, saw the gate to the old town and nosed round the gift shops. There are lots selling only Amber so I assume it is plentiful in Lithuania. Stopped in the park for a refreshing mini jug of homemade lemonade with additional raspberries ( delicious ) Then meandered back through the main park and the old city and had our late picnic lunch in the local park relaxing on a convenient bench, under a large tree. Then we reluctantly walked back to collect our backpacks ready to start the return journey to England. We wanted to leave plenty of time so caught the 88 back to the airport at about 3.30, arriving at the airport by 4pm. The plane left on time and actually arrived in Stansted early! We are now back home after a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.Read more
