  • Wangaratta

    20 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Wangaratta is a good place to stop for groceries. There are several major supermarkets so you can get just about everything you might need.

We headed to one of the parks that offered showers. After a quick stop we were on our way again. On the way in we spotted a neat minion letterbox at one of the farms. Heading out we went past a historic water tower.Baca selengkapnya

    20 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The Lions club must be quite busy here. They have an old church as their meeting place. A lot of work has been done on the Lions Park with good amenities and a free barbecue. The whole area is very well maintained.

To the side of the park is the start of a dairy museum. An old engine, genset and milking machine drive. It's all a layout I had not seen before and probably predates the more common Southern Cross machines. Vacuum for the milking process was created by a reciprocating piston. There did not seem to be a teat attachments though. These were easily damaged as they aged so were often discarded.

  • Doctors Creek Campground

    20 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Just a few kilometres south of Jamieson, are two excellent campgrounds. We have stayed at Skipworth reserve in the past because Doctors Creek was closed for repairs and upgrade.

Now Doctors is open again. Camping beside a mountain stream is pretty neat with the sound of babbling water in the background.

There are lots of birds. A large group of satin bower birds, probably females with last seasons brood. No sign of any males though.

The little wrens were hopping all around and even came very close into our camp. We stayed very still and enjoyed the moment.

Dozens of king parrots were here eating the many apples on a tree near the creek.

The crimson Rosella's were here as well as others including the tree creepers.

The weather has been quite pleasant. Temperatures during the day have been around 30 degrees with the night getting almost cool enough for a light jacket. Jamieson is quite elevated though, so one would expect cooler conditions.

  • Brown Brothers winery

    20 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

If you like wine, a stop at Milawa is a must. Here you can find the Brown Brothers winery. There is much to choose from with something for just about every taste.

Next stop would be the Milawa cheese factory. Stock up on cheeses and then check out the wines here. The Moscato is to die for. An explosion of tasty grapes in every sip. One taste and you are completely hooked. Next a muscat and suddenly you realize you can't afford to taste any more. They also have several preservative free wines.

Wines from the cellar are definitely just a little more posh than your average drive through bottle shop.

  • Licola

    21 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Licola is a pretty area. One can walk around a nicely grassed area with views of the river. . Nice picnic area by the river. A seat right down at the edge of the water looks like a nice spot to absorb the afternoon ambience.

Across the road is a Lions Village. This is a youth camp that caters up to 350 children in a camp environment. We saw kids soaring high and long on a flying fox. I expect there would be abseiling and many other activities.

  • Port Welshpool

    23 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today a fishing trip in Franklin Channel, Corner Inlet. This was my first fishing trip in a long time, and even longer since being in a small boat in the sea.

The weather was very good with a nice calm trip out. We set anchor and tried our luck to catch a Gummy Shark. The trouble is that as soon as the bait hits the bottom, the flathead hit. No chance at all to feed the Gummy. A little later we caught a Banjo Shark. This guy has quite pretty markings on its back but when turned upside down it looks like a weird face. Apparently they are not very good to eat. He was also rather small so we released him.

After a while with no action that was not flathead we moved to another area. Within seconds of dropping the line there were two flathead on the line. They seemed to not be fussy if the bait was squid or anything else. We ended up with a decent bag of catch even after throwing a lot of smaller legal size fish back.

As soon as the tide changed there were no more bites so we we headed back. The wind had come up so the trip was a bit rougher. On the way we had a good look at the old jetty that is going to be restored. The old jetty is actually the "new jetty" built in the late 1930's. The old jetty is a much smaller structure along further.

This was a good day outing. The cutting board was of great interest to the dog.

    More on the jetty renovation.

  • Noarlunga

    24 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

This is the locality we drove through on our "shortcut" to rejoin the main road running down to Wilson's Promontory. Along this road we turned towards the cost on a less travelled road.

The area is farms with cattle and recently baled hay. There seems to be quite a stock of the different kinds of bales seen around. The most used ones here though are large round tightly wrapped in plastic.Baca selengkapnya

  • Winkarlin Drive

    24 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Leaving Foster to the south is a shortcut of sorts heading towards Wilson's Promontory National Park. The road turns to a reasonable level gravel and eventually rejoins the main road.

Along this road was a track leading towards the sea. Eventually a turn to the left. Winkarlin drive is recently signed as a no through road. At the end of this road... Is nothing!

Heading back to the turn we noticed a "walk in" track. This leads out to the sea along the bay edge where we saw many black swans. This was a very picturesque area and worth the walk in.

  • Norman Beach, Wilson's Promontory NP

    24 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We, and hundreds of other people are here. Then a little rain and people started to disperse. Very scenic area.

Wilson's Promontory is mostly one large national park. It had probably escaped much development due to the terrain and probably harsh weather.

Today I was surprised by the huge numbers of visitors. The camping area was fully booked out with some vans and motor homes but lots of tent campers.

A sandy ramp runs down to the beach, quite easy going down but the fine sand made the return trip rather tiring. Down on the beach was a spectacular view of the mountain all covered at the top on misty cloud. The other side there were many people walking the track up to a scenic vantage point.

We had very little time to look around and were soon on our way out of the park. A mental note to make a real note to return with a few spare days to explore the many walking tracks.

  • Near Foster

    25 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Victoria has rabbits. We have seen quite a few here and obviously farmers and people who want to grow vegetables are not happy to have them around. In the garden where we are visiting, there are a couple of very young kittens. They seem to venture quite close to the house and eat the flowers off the plants in the garden.

The garden has many birds ranging from tiny wrens to some larger parrots. It is very delightful to sit quietly watching so many wrens, thrushes, fantails and wagtails visit the water feature for a bath. The fantails put on quite an aerobatic show as they hover and dive hunting flying insects to eat. Wrens dance delicately across the lawn as they forage for food, their little tails waving around back and forth.

The wrens and fantails seem to not be too concerned about people and come quite close.

  • McLoughlins Beach

    26 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

From the boat ramp area there is a footbridge over the channel that leads to the ocean. Only a bit under a kilometre and you would be standing on 90mile beach.

Heading along through the car parking area you can pick up a delightful boardwalk that connects to the township. It is good to see the effort being put in to allow people to experience the wetlands safely and without impacting the plants and creatures that live there.Baca selengkapnya

  • Reeves Beach Campground

    26 Februari 2018, Australia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

An impressive sunset, early moonrise, not yet full and lots of birds. This place was not on our list but once here we changed our plans.

The tiny wrens were quite numerous and not particularly shy. A couple were coming right up under our feet in the camp while we sat very quietly. The blue male was not quite so brave and watched from a few metres away.

A tree with lots of red berries was the star attraction for lots of silver eyes. They would fly in and eat the it fill of berries before heading off. Then the next shift arrived. A Robin turned up but never came close. A small marsupial, probably a quite small bandicoot came over the dune and scuttled quickly to the cover of a log.

The beach is part of the 90 mile Beach so there is no end to be seen. Over the high dune it is very windy and actually feels a bit cold. Behind the dune where the camp is the wind is less but once the sun went down a coat was in order.
