We made it, but our luggage didn't !

    October 23, 2014 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

Landed early 5;50am, our luggage did not make it. Filed a claim, should be here tomorrow morning, only one flight per day. Oh well. 45 minute ride to hotel, arnovoholl. checked in early for extra $, included breakfast. We were hungry and tired. Had pickled herring ! Got our room over looking the fjord across the street, very nice, although visibility is not so good, very overcast, gloomy. ICELANDAIR gave us 'overnight 'bag with essentials which included a white large t shirt. Our room is very European modern. Clean and fresh. Time to crash for a few hours, then to orientation at 5:30pm to meet our tour manager. Slept for a few hours. Walked over to the Main Street to get a bite to eat and do some shopping for warm clothing. We had a great Jam Burger,a burger with blue & Brie cheese, arugula topped with jam! Really tasty, at Prikio Kaffihus. Bought some fleece lined leggings and a traditional wool knitted headband for warmth. Went up to 8 th floor to meet our tour guide Gulla, and fellow travelers. All very nice. Had a small bite at Sky, 8th floor, Cristi had potato leek soup which was average at best, I had orange pickled herring on homemade rye bread, it was wonderful! We meet at 8 pm to go see northern lights !! Fingers crossed. We drove for about an hour into the pitch dark country, pulled into an area with a small restaurant. Stood out side for quite awhile freezing and taking pictures of ourselves freezing waiting to see whatever we were suppose to see. We got a hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps and a slice of carrot cake , $36 later! We went outside and explored the are with a flashlight.
Founds some steps that took us to a black sand beach! Who knew?! Even though we could see so many stars in the dark sky, no northern lights :( Gulla said maybe well try tomorrow night. Back to hotel by midnight.

    City tour & Blue Lagoon

    October 24, 2014 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

A breakfast of pickled herring, cottage cheese and bacon! So good! Got in the bus by 9am. Went by the Hafdi House which is where Ronald Reagan and Gorbachev agreed and shook hands which was the beginning of ending the Cold War. Lots of history being told by Gulla but honestly wasn't paying attention. Went a the Perlan Museum, a glass dome shaped building with great views of the city below. There are mostly Lutheran churches here. Only one Catholic Church in all of Iceland. We visited a very pretty, although very plain, church on top of the hill. Went into the Reykjavik museum for just a bit, then off to lunch. The Grill Market. It was so pretty inside. Lava rock walls , soft lighting. We shared a lovely house garden and a grill combo plate . The presentation was lovely. The salad was in a little metal bucket. Colorful with mandarins, beet sprouts and a drizzle of lemon vinegarette dressing two grilled skewers. Monkfish and lamb and chicken wings. deep fried veggies served in a bowl All perfectly cooked. Curly fries and a Cobbette of corn served with a pat of butter and black lava salt, it was a great meal. All of this , including the slab of bread, served on a wood carving board. We took a shuttle to the bus station , transferred to a big bus and off to the blue lagoon. We walked through a path with lava walls on each side to enter the building. Received our electronic wristbands that would allow us to lock and unlock our cubby, order our drinks , sparkling strawberry wine & Asti Spumante , at the swim up bar. It was very cold outside which only made it soooo nice to step down into that wonderfully warm and soft water. We walked right over to the swim up bar and received our frozen little nugget of algae that we will dip into the warm water and rub on our faces that will look green and then turn white! Got our drinks, jwaded around, rubbed silica on our arms and chest, chatted with a couple of men from northern England that got married the day before. We stood under the pounding water of the waterfall to beat on our shoulders. It was really nice. Did not want to get out! Took the bus back to hotel. Was told to meet Gulla at 8pm for our second try of the northern lights chaser. Went up to the Sky Lounge for a quick bite. We had vodka cranberry drinks ,. While waiting for our food our server asked us if we would like some nuts, 'sure' we said. She brought us A very small bowl with about 15 nuts in it! Cristi and I looked at each other and didn't have to say a word! Hahahaha! We then got our and chicken nachos. Not impressed. Got bundled up and on the bus at 8pm. Traveled through a very long tunnel that was under the largest fjord, took 6 minutes to come out the other end. The first sighting of lights were exciting but minimal. The bus driver and Gulla were getting updates of sightings. We took a pit stop at a very nice mini market , snow flurries made the evening more exciting. At one point we tried to turn around in a residential driveway. It was a long road that lead up to the house. The driver could not make a three point turn in the area near the house. The owners came out wondering WTF! They were very kind. They told us that they were expecting guest the next day for a wedding, and thought we were the guests arriving early! Very funny! They moved one of their cars so we could finally turn around! So funny! We got another update, got to a pitch dark open field and finally witnessed several! It was great. It was also freezing outside! As we drove back we witnessed more a couple times. Got home at 1:30am. What a full and fantastic day it was!Read more

    Full Circle Tour

    October 25, 2014 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

After a filling breakfast at the hotel, we got on the bus at 8:30am. As we drove out of the city the snow capped mountains from the night before, were beautiful to look at. As we got further out of the city it became evident that we were in Iceland! White mountains everywhere , so pretty. Just before our first stop , there were these glowing buildings in the distance, it was still early dawn so hard to miss. They ended up being glass greenhouses with Amber lights on! Our first stop was in a national park that had stables with Iceland horses. These horses are equal to our ponies. Real thick manes and short legs. This stop had a lovely gift store that had beautiful shoes from Barcelona. The bathrooms were hand painted murals of barns and horses real 'country '. More gorgeous landscape along the way to the geothermal geysers. Amazing craters, several of them on this lava hillside, filled with bubbly hot steaming water, 80-100c which is 192-232* Fahrenheit , that would get so hot it would erupt and shoot water 100 feet high! It was windy and freezing cold while walking around and looking at these but oh so worth it! We continued throughout the countryside to the spectacular humongous Gulfoss Falls. WOW! Breathtaking! We walked up the ' road to nowhere' to overlook the falls from above. We are talking, cold and windy, but oh so beautiful . We had lunch at the restaurant on top of this mountain. We shared 2 soups, cream of mushroom & Lamb vegetable . Both were tasty and warmed us up. Went to where the Game of Thrones was filmed. Troll holes galore! A lava rock hillside covered in moss with fissures throughout, some with water in between that was so blue and crystal clear! Back into the city by 5pm. We went straight to dinner at The SeaBaron, near the pier. A little shack that had great fish. You select your skewer of fish from a refrigerator case. Many choices. We chose shrimp, scallops, halibut and bluling and a couple of veggie skewers. They grill them to perfection. Walked around the quaint little village like area and then back to the hotel. Another great day!Read more

    Our last day in Iceland

    October 26, 2014 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

Slept in until 8:30! Breakfast and then a nice brisk walk to The FleaMarket near the pier. Not the best FleaMarket. Mostly used items. Walked up Lavaesguer street for the last time and then down to the little shack that sold the best little hotdogs! Cheap too! Walked back to the hotel wrapped things up. The bus picked us up at 1:30, at the airport by 3pm. Had a bite to eat, open faced shrimp and smoked salmon sandwiches. Fresh and delicious. Headed for JFK, Flight left at 5.Read more
