  • Ross

    21. desember 2021, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We haven't ventured into this beautiful village as yet! Founded in 1821, Ross is a historic village with a penal colony past and was named by Governor Lachlan Macquarie after the seat of Ross in the British parliament, which was held by his friend, H Buchanan of Loch Lomond.

I am hoping to see the historic sandstone bridge built in 1836 which crosses the Macquarie River soon!

Here are some pictures of our digs for the night and me!!

  • Sorell Barracks

    22. desember 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Circa 1827, Sorell Barracks B and B is perfect for a history buff!! The doorways are low to denote the height of the soldiers that were stationed here. It's full of post colonial beauty 💜💜💜

  • Port Arthur Historical Site

    24. desember 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

This is the second time I have been here and it's just as eerie. In just about to go back out and hope I can stay out of the sun!

Beginning as a small wooden penal colony, it grew into one of the largest penal colonies in Australia and convict repeat offenders were sent there.Les mer

  • Tasmanian Devil Unzoo

    26. desember 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

I usually don't like zoo's for the same reason I don't like circuses - I don't like seeing animals in captivity and/or harmed in any way. But this is different 😊 Most of the animals are free to come and go and they aren't captive 💜💜💜 I loved it and found out so much about my sister Vicky's favourite lil animal, the Tasmanian Devil 💜💜💜💜Les mer

  • Tessellated Pavement

    26. desember 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Nik and I went to see these magnificent rocks on our last trip to this amazing state. The rock is siltstone and salt deposits left on the rock over millions of years has cracked the stone leaving straight and diagonal lines. Today, different to last time, we had high tide!!Les mer

  • Bellerive

    26. desember 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This village is just beautiful 💜💜💜 We are in the Greater Hobart Area in the city of Clarence. It was first settled in the 1820's and was known as Kangaroo Point, it became Bellerive in the 1830's, meaning 'beautiful river bank'. Kangaroo Bluff has a point where a British fortress, Kangaroo Battery was built in 1885 and is now a public park.

I had a bit of a walk around the village and took some photographs. I was particularly interested in the old Bellerive Post Office building from 1897 which now houses the Tasmanian Genealogical Society and the Sound Preservation Museum.

Given its maritime history, where boats would travel across the Derwent River, the village has a nautical feel. I love it here and Hobart is my favourite city in Australia.

  • Bruny Island Ferry

    27. desember 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

What a wonderful day we have had!! Today we visited Bruny Island, the biggest southern most island off Tasmania and 45 mins from Hobart. Tasmania never ceases to amaze me 💜💜💜

We caught the Sealink Bruny Island ferry over and back and explored the island. It was magnificent!!Les mer

  • Bruny Neck and Truganini Lookout

    27. desember 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

This 'neck' is a very narrow isthmus separating north and south Bruny Island. Safe and calm on the right and wild and open on the left. Of course I splashed around in the wild side!

Truganini was born on Bruny Island C 1812 and wrongly believed to be the last 'full' First Nations woman. She was a woman displaced (putting it nicely) by colonisation, being sent to Flinders Island and then onto Oyster Cove and passing away in Hobart in 1876. Truganini had requested for a decent burial from the authorities, asking for her ashes to be scattered in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, the narrow strip of water separating Bruny Island from the mainland of Tasmania that we traveled through to get to Bruny Island, however this was denied in death. Truganini's skeleton was exhumed by the Royal Society of Tasmania with her skeleton being again disrespected and placed on display.

Truganini's skeleton and her cremation finally happened a century later with her ashes being scattered in the Channel.
