    On the airplane

    December 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Flew out on a very early flight. I love watching the sky (you'll find me in the window seat). Barcelona's container port conveniently aligns with the BCN airport approach.

  • Casa de l'Ardiaca

    December 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

The Casa de l'Ardiaca refers its origins as once being the Archdeacon's house. It was built, and rebuilt, of parts of the ancient Roman wall of Barcino. Excavation has shown that the old Roman aqueduct ran through one of the walls! Since 1919 it has housed the Barcelona City Archives. An exhibition of Barcelona "cartel" (poster) art was open when we visited.Read more

  • Museu Frederic Marès

    December 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

This "hidden gem" of a museum features the collection of the artist (sculptor) Frederic Marès. He collected predominantly... sculptures...from prehistoric through the 20th century, with an emphasis on medieval Christian/church art. We didn't finish (thanks to a late start) but finally found the entrance to the museum we had set off to find!Read more

  • Maritime Museum of Barcelona

    December 21, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Barcelona is, of course, a city on the sea, founded between two rivers. The MMB explores the linkage between sea and city, naval power, commerce, and development. The MMB is located within the old Royal Dockyards, portions of which date to the late 1300s.Read more

  • Poble Espanyol

    December 22, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

How do walk around all of Spain in one day? Visit the Poble Espanyol (literally, "Spanish Village". Built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, the Poble consists of 117 full-scale buildings reproducing the originals in different places in the Iberian Peninsula. Joined together to form a small town that recreates urban atmospheres of disparate places in Spain, it was even used as a movie set for a historical drama! During the holidays the Town Square hosts an entertainment stage. Every building reproduces or captures characteristic originals (structure, elements, styles) captured in a 1927 survey of Spain. The main entrance, e.g. reproduces the Gate of San Vicente in the city wall of Ávila.Read more

  • Palau de la Música Catalana (I)

    December 23, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

A gem of the Modernismo, with the cornerstone laid on 23 April 1905, Saint George Day. This building was the creation of the Orfeó Català which was both a choir and an organisation dedicated to creating and training choirs...out of progressive idealism, to divert worker's hours from the bars into the arts, and to preserve and teach Catalán songs. The Palau therefore teems with the symbols of Catalán nationalism, from the cornerstone being laid on the saint's day of the patron saint of Catalonia, to the profusion of roses throughout the decorations.Read more

  • Cristobal Colón

    December 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Modern historians may disagree about his true impact, but in past centuries Cristobal Colón, aka Christopher Columbus, was "the thing".

This monument stands at the centre of the Old Port.

Kids don't care about Colón high above, for there are LIONS to ride!Read more

  • Aquarium

    December 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

The Barcelona Aquarium (L'Aquárium Barcelona) is the best (maybe largest) Mediterranean-focused aquarium in the world. The "collection" is organised by locale: shallow/ rocky, shallow/sandy, and so forth, to put each species into its proper environment and context. It also explored corals & kelps/seaweed more comprehensively than aquariums of similar size.Read more

  • Going Home

    December 30, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Flight was delayed but once aboard, all went smoothly. Fußball/fútbol on the brain, the BCN control tower looks somewhat like the World Cup design...
