    Hot and humid

    February 6, 2022 on Norfolk Island ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

Very easy trip over on the plane.
Staying at the South Pacific Resort Hotel.
The Island had 14 inches of rain over the last week and I reckon we have about 98% humidity now.
Bus driver proud to tell us that the shopping area has street lights and there are also 3 roundabouts that you can drive over if no-one sees you.
Room is musty - a fan but no air conditioning. No Internet or WlFi.

  • Island Orientation

    February 7, 2022 on Norfolk Island ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We sat out by the pool pre dinner last night and it was very balmy. A few drinks made it even better.
Then had a very up-market and delicious dinner at our hotel. All staff are really friendly. I had prawns, fish and brûlée.
    Slept extremely well.
Half day Orientation Drive around the Island.

  • St Barnabas Church

    February 8, 2022 on Norfolk Island ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Scenery on Island is rugged and beautiful. Lots of old colonial houses and ruins. Cemetery is amazing - volunteer grave diggers and no burial charges for Islanders.
St Barnabas Church is 4th ranked on World Heritage List.
There was a Sound and Light Show of the convict settlement. Very brutal as expected but a good show.

  • Bush Walk

    February 8, 2022 on Norfolk Island ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Picture of Colleen McCullough’s house and stained window. Inside the house was completely over the top and flamboyant just like her.
We had an Island Fish and Fry dinner with a local singer who told tales of his life on Pitcairn Island. Great night but still raining.
Early start for our walk today. Wednesday - It rained last night and lots of low clouds this morning. By the time we reached the National Park it was getting wetter. However we started off into the rain forest and it was well worth the effort. Came out absolutely soaked and muddy.
The bush breakfast afterwards was most welcome. Eggs, bacon etc as well as a continental breakfast if preferred.
Lunch was a no-no after that. Washed shoes clothes myself and my hair before our culture talk at 1.00pm.

  • Progressive dinner

    February 8, 2022 on Norfolk Island ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We are eating at 3 local homes tonight .
1st house was like a House and Garden home.
Sherry and nibbles plus a run down on the owner’s lives here on NI. Everyone is related to the Christian Family from Pitcairn/Bounty and everyone works so hard.
Next house was main meal. The ladies from both these homes were sisters.
Next was dessert and the lady was a stand up comedian. She assured us that she was descended from Fletcher Christian and a Tahitian princess. Also kept telling us how ‘royal’ she was. Very funny.

  • Rain and fog

    February 9, 2022 on Norfolk Island ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

There are a number of people here who have been stranded because the planes cannot arrive from the mainland to pick them up. We were lucky to arrive before the cyclone affected the weather and plane activities.
    Still hot and humid.
Visited a goat farm. They make cheeses and soaps. The owner and his family also make all types of pottery, jewellery and paintings.
Went to see the T shirt printer then the chocolate and Lolly shop. Had ice cream and milkshakes.
Afternoon was free so had coffee and then just relaxed.
Tonight’s dinner is at the Homestead.
Our bookings were mixed up so half the group were fitted in to eat while the rest of us went for drinks at the Bowling Club.
By the time we were able to go back to the Homestead for our meal we were well primed.
Everyone was fed but a very late night.

  • Raining

    February 10, 2022 on Norfolk Island ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Today we are meant to be doing a Garden Tour.
Very wet under foot. The garden we went to had lots of interesting things other than trees and bushes etc. Fruit trees, creepers, exotic trees and a maze for kids plus a large one for adults.
Spiders everywhere so we girls picked a tall person to walk behind. Golden Orb Spiders I think. Webs were humongous.
Next was a restricted visit to the Botanic Gardens and morning tea. Still drizzling with rain.
Program change again. After lunch we went to the Cyclorama. More history of Norfolk Is and Pitcairn Is. Extremely well done.
Dinner at our Resort. Our cooks are as good as any others on the Island.

  • Tropical Cyclone

    February 10, 2022 on Norfolk Island ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Quite exciting evening. Island battened down for torrential rain and wind.
We had to boil water and fill containers or whatever we could find because the water supply is run by electricity. Once that goes it’s bedlam.
Wind was fierce all night plus rain. All safe and tucked up in our units.
Some parts of the Island lost power. Not us.
Huge waves at Kingston. Hurled huge rocks up and over the car park.Waves covered the huge winch used to bring cargo onto the shore.

  • Ghost Tour

    February 11, 2022 on Norfolk Island ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

Tonight we ate outside at Hilli’s Restaurant.
Followed up later with the Ghost Tour. Lots of scary stories - none of us saw any ghosts!!

  • Sunday

    February 12, 2022 on Norfolk Island ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Our last full day and the sun is out. No mist over the airport so those people who have been stranded here for four days can now leave.
    We leave tomorrow.
Today the Glass bottom boat Tour has been cancelled as the waves are still crashing over the reef into the lagoon.
Went to the Convict Settlement instead to witness the horrors of convict life. Followed by a walk through the Cemetery.
Our last outing of the week was a traditional dinner down at No. 9 Quality Row. Rooms were not restored where we ate. It was called the ‘Annex’. Nearly had a full moon.
