  • Day 1

    Boma Road Moshi Kilimanjaro

    February 10, 2018 in Tanzania ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

    Day 1: Umbwe Gate (5,905 ft/1,800 m) to Umbwe Camp (9,190 ft/2,800 m) 8km, 5-7 hours
Following an early breakfast, you will have a briefing from your guide. At 9 am, our staff will take you on the hour-long drive from your hotel in Moshi to the Umbwe Village where your guides and porters will prepare your equipment and supplies. Kilimanjaro Park registration will be completed here and you will also receive your lunch pack. After registration, you will begin your ascent from the Umbwe Gate and continue on a small vehicle path until you reach the signage notifying you have reached the Umbwe Trail. You will then climb for 5-6 hours through dense rainforest. It is impossible to miss the giant fig trees and rubber trees as in some places, their roots have overtaken the path. Although, sometimes slippery themselves, they can make for good footholds when the path becomes sloppy with mud after a rain. Umbwe Camp is inside the forest and will your first stop. When you arrive, you will find your camp and tent is already set up by the porters who ran ahead. They will bring you boiled drinking water and washing water in preparation for dinner.

    Day 2: Umbwe Camp (9,190 ft/2,800 m) to Barranco Camp (12,800 ft/3,900 m) 8km, 4-5 hours
Rise early for coffee or tea. After breakfast, pack up for the day’s trek. Your trek will begin steeply through the disappearing rainforest glades before ascending into drier air of Giant Erica and Heat hland terrain where the vegetation is sparse with small shrubs. You will continue on an exposed ridge that offers you with your first view of Uhuru Peak if the clouds have parted enough. After lunch, you begin to enter into the semi-desert terrain when you trek through a garden of Senecio plants. These odd looking groundsels resemble something like a pre-historic cactus. Once you reach Barranco Camp, your porters will boil drinking and washing water before serving dinner. While you wait for your dinner, you will have a chance to experience one of the most memorable sunsets you have ever seen as the sun drops through the valley. Pay attention to your body and keep your guide informed of any signs of altitude sickness.

    Day 3:Barranco Camp Acclimatization
You will spend Day 3 exploring near Barranco Camp for much-needed acclimatization. Keep your camera handy to capture the scenery of the groundsel-clad campsite. Many trekkers rank this as their favorite camp on this trail, which another reason this is perfect spot for your acclimatization day. If you are highly confident in your body’s ability to acclimatize well, you can choose the 6-Day Umbwe Itinerary.

    Day 4:Barranco Camp (12,960 ft/3,950m) to Karanga Camp (13,780 ft/4,200m) 7 km, 4 hours
After sleeping below the Great Barranco Wall, you get your chance to tackle this hurdle. Don’t worry…It’s much easier than it looks. Continue up until you reach just below the Heim Glacier. Then head down through the Karanga Valley. This is the last place for your porters to gather water. They will collect all the water for the remainder of the ascent here. You will settle in here at the Karanga Camp. After lunch, you can spend the afternoon doing light exploring or resting while taking in the views of Mawenzi’s towering spires.

    Day 5:Karanga Camp (13,780 ft/4,200m) to Barafu Camp (14,930 ft/4,550m) 5 km, 3-4 hours
After breakfast, you’ll head east, crossing over multiple ridges and valleys until you join up with the Mweka Route and turn left to continue up the ridge for an hour to reach the Barafu Hut. You will arrive at camp to find your tent pitched on a rocky ridge with high winds. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the camp before dark to be safe. Also, have your headlamp/flashlight handy if you need to leave the tent after dark. You will prepare your equipment (replace batteries for headlamp and camera) before you go to bed by 7 PM and try to catch a few hours of shuteye before your summit attempt!

Day 6: SUMMIT DAY! Barafu Camp (14,930 ft/4,550m) to Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft/5,895 m) to Mweka Camp (10,170 ft/3,100 m) 7 km up and 22 km down, 8 hours up, 9-10 hours down
Wake at 11:30 PM for tea or coffee and biscuits and then depart Barafu on your bid for the peak. You will climb 6 hours through thick scree following multiple switchbacks between the Ratzel and Rebmann glaciers until you reach Stella Point (18,650 ft/5,685 m). You have just completed what most climbers consider to be the most challenging part of their trek. Depending on your pace to this point, you may get the chance to enjoy the majestic sunrise during your short rest here. Although you will be fatigued, it is important to keep moving due to the extreme cold. At Stella Point, you have joined up with the last bit of the Marangu Route. You will hike along the rim for another 1-2 hours until you reach your ultimate goal of Uhuru Peak. Congratulations, you are now standing on the Roof of Africa! You will have time to take pictures with the world-famous Uhuru Peak sign, but it is important to begin your descent soon in order to allow yourself enough time to rest at the Barafu Camp. After a 3-hour descent down sliding scree, you will reach Barafu to have a short rest while you collect your gear and then continue down the path back into the forest camp of Mweka. You might experience a little rain in the afternoon, so be sure to have your rain gear in your daypack. Enjoy some dinner and some well-deserved sleep. At Mweka Camp, the office sells bottled water, soft drinks, candy bars, and beer.

    Day 7:Mweka Camp (10,170 ft/3,100 m) to Mweka Gate (6,500 ft/1,980 m) 10 km, 3-4
    hours
Wake up for breakfast as usual, pack, and descend through a short, scenic, 3-hour hike to Mweka Gate. Wait until you and all of your gear has reached the gate before you tip your staff. After registering at the gate, you will wait to receive your summit certificates (green for those who reached Stella Point and gold for those who reach Uhuru Peak). From the gate, if the road is too muddy for vehicles, you will continue your hike for 1 hour to the Mweka Village, 3km away. There you will enjoy a hot lunch before being driven back to Moshi where you can have your first hot shower in days!

    Boma Road Moshi Kilimanjaro

    February 10, 2018 in Tanzania ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

    Day 1
Rongai Gate (1,800m/5,900ft) to First Cave Camp (2,600m/8,400ft) Elevation Gain: 760 meters, 2,000 feet

After an early breakfast in Moshi/Arusha, drive for Rongai Gate near the Kenya border. After registering at the gate, begin your climb to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. During the first day, hike through forests where you may see and hear wildlife. Eat lunch on the trail before continuing to the first campsite. Rongai ascends via the less forested northern side of the mountain. The Rongai Route is one of the least crowded routes on Kilimanjaro because of the long drive to the gate. The Rongai trail is thought to have the best chance of viewing wildlife.

    Day 2
First Cave Camp (2,600m/8,400ft) to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m/11,810ft) Elevation Gain: 1,000 meters, 3,280 feet
During day two hike through Kilimanjaro's moorland. The Rongai route is relatively short and steep, making for shorter hiking times. During this day, view Mawenzi Peak ahead.

    Day 3
Kikelewa Camp (3,600m/11,810ft) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m/14,200ft) Elevation Gain: 730 meters, 2,390 feet
This day is an acclimatization day, allowing you to hike in the beginning of the day and rest in the afternoon and evening. The hike is relatively short but steep. The Mawenzi Tarn campsite is situated below Mawenzi Peak and offers stunning views of both Mawenzi and Kibo.

    Day 4
Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m/14,200ft) to Kibo Camp (4,750m/15,580ft) Elevation Gain: 420 meters/1380 feet
Cross the lunar landscape of the saddle on this day to arrive at the final campsite. Kibo Camp is situated directly below the Kibo cone, giving you views of your final destination.

    Day 5
Kibo Camp (4,750m/15,580ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,340ft) to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft) Elevation Gain: 1,145 meters, 3,760 feet Elevation Loss: 2,175 meters, 7,140 feet
Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. For the next six hours, hike by the light of your flashlight. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Gilman's Point. The hike from Gilman's to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately two hours. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Horombo Hut.

    Day 6
Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft) to Marangu Gate (1,800m/5,905ft) Elevation Loss: 1,920 meters, 6,295 feet
After breakfast, finish the trek with a descent to Marangu Gate. Your last hike on Kilimanjaro is a beautiful one, passing through Kilimanjaro's cloud forest. Watch your step during the descent, as the trail can be slippery. Our vehicles will be waiting at Marangu Gate to take you back to Moshi/Arusha. You will be able to buy t-shirts and sodas at the gate.

  • Day 1

    Boma Road Moshi Kilimanjaro

    February 9, 2018 in Tanzania ⋅ 🌙 32 °C

    1. Day: Moshi to Arusha National Park
Your adventure will start at Moshi, a cheerful, bustling town filled with coffee houses and a lively buzz. You’ll set off to the Arusha National Park, the setting for the jewel-like Lake Momella, which you’ll glimpse through the bronze bush where the Ngurduto Crater buffalo, waterbuck, giraffe, warthogs, zebra and gazelle reside throughout the year. You’ll set out on foot, too, for a stroll that will offer you the sensation of feeling Africa’s vibrant pulse through the soles of your shoes and you’ll experience the bush in infinite detail. You’ll be safe, though, as an armed ranger will accompany you as you explore the landscape of buzzing insects and birds calling, with the cries of the savannah further off. You’ll hike through lush forest to a sparkling waterfall and, further, to a magical place famous for the antics of the black and white colobus monkeys. You’ll spend the evening gazing at the stars at a camp close to the park, while our chef prepares a delicious meal for you.

    2. Day: Arusha National Park to Tarangire National Park to Mto wa Mbu
After a tasty breakfast you’ll head off to the lovely, quiet Tarangire National Park. It’s a huge park, with a diverse concentration of wildlife especially between July and October when the Tarangire River is in full flood. If you love elephants, then this is the park for you. You’ll never forget your first siting of the majestic African elephant, the largest land mammal in the world; and at Tarangire, herds of these beautiful, intelligent creatures wander at leisure, looking after their young. But you’ll also see a dizzying variety of wildlife including lions, giraffe, warthogs, ostrich, impala, cheetah, mongoose, buffalo, and baboons. The birdlife is magnificent, too, and you’ll catch the flash of a red-and-yellow barbet, or gaze on the slow circling of the tawny eagle. After a picnic lunch you’ll drive to Mto wa Mbu and reach the campsite in the late afternoon. You’ll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the African evening while enjoying a tasty dinner.

    3. Day: Mto wa Mbu to Lake Natron
After a yummy breakfast, you’ll depart for Lake Natron, which is famous for its salinity and the unique consequences of this. The microorganisms that prefer an alkaline environment cause the lake’s russet tone, and you’ll see salt-crust rafts scattered in the shallows. Over half the world’s lesser flamingoes are born in the lake, and you are likely to see clouds of shimmering pink as the flamingoes settle and stalk on the still waters. You’ll explore a curious terrain of salt marshes and freshwater wetlands with its unique flora, leading to sparkling waterfalls. The lake is framed by the incredible Oldoinyo Lengai (Mountain of God in Maa, the language of Maasai people), an active volcano that carves out hornitos - incredible statues made of cooled lava. (We can arrange a climb up Oldoinyo Lengai – it’s an extra day to your adventure. Just ask us when you book!) You’ll spend the evening watching the sun set pink and gold over this incredible landscape, and dinner will be served as the first stars appear.

    4. Day: Lake Natron to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast you’ll say goodbye to Lake Natron and hello to the world-famous Serengeti National Park. But first you’ll travel through the bustling towns of Loliondo and Wasso through Klein’s Gate at the northeast entrance to the park. This road trip takes in an array of sites: towns and villages, savannah and forest, and you’ll be able to spot animals like antelope, wildebeest and zebra. You’ll arrive at our campsite in the centre of the Serengeti where you can stretch your legs then fill up with a delicious dinner in time for a good night’s sleep, ready for your full day’s adventures tomorrow.

    5. Day: Serengeti National Park
After a nourishing breakfast, you’ll continue into the vast plains of the magnificent Serengeti, home to a diverse array of hundreds of species of animal and bird. Each moment of today’s adventure will stimulate your senses; your eyes alert for each new siting, your ears feasting on the calls, screeches and buzz of life – or the still, dead silence of the hot noonday. The Serengeti is world famous for its diversity – you’ll likely see lions, leopard, elephant, cheetahs and water buffalo - and all within a few feet of your jeep. There’s nowhere like it. It’s also home to one of the natural wonders of the world – the Great Migration of zebra and wildebeest as they traverse the plains in their thousands, risking their lives with the predators they attract, who are also just trying to stay alive. It’s humbling to watch. You’ll also spot some of the park’s lesser known, but equally beautiful creatures including eland, hyenas, gazelle, crocodile, giraffe, zebra, monkeys, baboons, hippo and rhino. The hundreds of bird species, both endemic and migrating from the Eurasia, are a special bonus for bird-watchers. The day’s delights will continue with a freshly cooked and delicious dinner at our campsite in Seronera, under the stars.
    6. Day: Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater
You’ll be up and about after breakfast for another drive through the sights and sounds of the Serengeti: the golden grasslands dotted with acacia, the endless blue of the skies and the ever-changing sites: over here you might see a rare tree-climbing lion – not as graceful as the leopard who is a lithe, natural climber – and towards the horizon a mixed herd of zebra and wildebeest grazing gently. After lunch you’ll set off for your next adventure, which is an exploration of the unique Ngorongoro Crater, and we’ll spend overnight at Simba Camp, which is on the very rim of the Crater itself. This is an ideal place to rest and relax, as you’ll enjoy a drink watching the incredible colours of the sunset range over the savannah, and the shadow of night creep into the caldera below. You’ll enjoy a delicious dinner by starlight.

    7. Day: Ngorongoro Crater to Lake Eyasi
You’ll be up early in a world etched in the pink and apricot rays of an African dawn because early mornings are the best time to spot the animals – especially the Big Five. But don’t worry; you’ll have a filling, healthy breakfast before you set off! The volcanic landscape is rich and fertile and attracts thousands of grazing animals – and their predators. The high walls of the crater form a protective shelter for many animals and prevent migration, so the diversity is dizzying and you’ll spot zebra, wildebeest and cackling hyenas, amongst others. After a busy morning you’ll enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch near a pond full of hippos and then gaze on the sites at Soda Lake: the flocks of graceful flamingos as well as stork, ibis, and crane. Circling in the indigo blue sky are vultures and hawks eagerly in search of a discarded carcases. In the afternoon you’ll set off for Lake Eyasi, in time for a peaceful sunset walk at the lakeshore before a well-deserved rest at the Lake Eyasi campsite.

    8. Day: Lake Eyasi to Mto wa Mbu
Lake Eyasi is a special place; it’s the home of one of the world’s last tribe of hunter- gatherers. The Hadzabe bushpeople grow no food, raise no livestock, and live without rules or calendars. They live a hunter-gatherer existence that is little changed in 10,000 years. You’ll be able to watch the Hadzabe traditional methods of survival, including how they hunt; and you can be sure nothing is hunted that is not used in its entirety. The Hadzabe way respects the land and all of its inhabitants and you’ll find a beauty and peace in their way of life. After lunch you’ll journey to Mto wa Mbu, which is very close to the gate of our next national park, the Lake Manyara National Park. You’ll spend the evening reflecting on your adventures so far, and relaxing with a drink as you listen to the calls of the evening.

    9. Day: Lake Manyara National Park to Moshi
Another early start – fuelled by a decent breakfast – to spot the wildlife as they are starting their day. Lake Manyara National Park nestles at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, and is a patchwork of diverse landscapes: the shrubby expanse of the golden savannah, the narrow shores teeming with wildlife and the still waters of Lake Manyara itself. This park is famous for elephant and for its tribes of baboons, who swoop and call to each other and never seem to stop for breath. It’s also home to the legendary tree-climbing lions as well as powerful water buffalo, the majestic African elephant, and giraffe, impala and hippo. With over four hundred species of dazzling birds, some of which are migratory, it’s a birdwatcher's paradise. You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the park, to the calls of the birds and the buzzing of insects while the sun turns everything to gold. After more wildlife spotting, you’ll say goodbye to the Lake and drive through Maasai bomas, baobab forest and rolling savannah plains en route to Moshi, where your safari adventure will end. If you’re too stunned by the beauty of what you have witnessed to move, we’ll be happy to take you to the airport or Arusha.
