Today was a fun filled day exploring Sydney and mostly the Sydney Opera House! We enjoyed a slow start to the day, and then headed out to Pancakes on the Rocks for breakfast. We enjoyed delicious pancakes, eggs, and bacon. From there Dad headed back to the AirBnB to rest because he didn’t feel very well, and Maddy, Mom, and Emily headed to the Sydney Eye!

After about a 20 minute walk, we arrived. We moved quickly through the queue and before we knew it we were at the top! It was really neat to be able to lookout over Sydney in every direction. We saw the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, the airport, the harbor, Allianz Stadium, and so much more. It also helped us get our bearings in the city. We grabbed lunch in the same building before heading to the Opera House.

We had a great guided tour of the Opera House. We learned that it was built over 16 years, and the gentlemen who designed it, Jorn Utzon, actually quit the project before it was finished because of government changes and he was de-funded, and a different architect finished the project. We learned that the outside is made of over 1 million self-cleaning tiles, and that each arch is a part of the same sphere. We got to see inside a couple of theaters and got a mini preview of our show this evening! We also met “Benny the Seal” who lives in the water below and likes to sit in the sun on a ledge just below the walkway!

Next we wandered through the royal botanical gardens. We enjoyed the sunshine and the various plants and trees. We ended at Mrs. Macquerie’s Chair which is a great view point of the Bridge and Opera House for Sunset. We waited for sunset and it was worth it! The views were incredible! We grabbed a quick Uber back to one of Sydney’s oldest pubs on the corner of our Airbnb, Here of Waterloo and met dad for dinner.

After dinner, we headed to Aida - an opera at the Sydney Opera House! We have never been to an opera and now we can say our first opera was at the Sydney Opera house! Pretty cool! It was extremely well done, and we all managed to stay awake and enjoy it even though it was all in Italian!
