Nearly filled an SD card with images shot at sunset. Herd of elk ( seen in distance), two heron nesting in bare tree on bank, sunset clouds but mainly Grand Teton (the peak) reflections and reflected with clouds behind - mostly at sunset.
This a. m. stopped at the lookout of the site where Ansel Adams shot BEND IN SNAKE RIVER... my thinking, if a photographic idyl of mine (Ansel Adams) can do it... so can I - well try at least.Читать далее

Spent a good part of the morning observing an immature (3rd year) Bald Eagle across the river - fascinating. As people were about to leave, it took off from the fir and flew close over us. Definitely Bald, but not mature, therefore immature. Shelby illustrates three distinct phases of immaturity, this was certainly third year.
OXBOW Just will not disappoint! Osprey overflight, another Bald Eagle Connie spotted, I didn't, then the spot of the night, Great Blue Heron in flight long legs very long bill. BUT THE spot of this trip...? Connie nearly stepped on a RUFFED GROUSE. + two chicks along a path next to Twin Oceans Lake. I have images! Could have reached down and touched her as Mama called for her chicks! And chicks came. All images on the LUMIX - zero internet access.
This is a TRULY SPECTACULAR park for it's beauty. Sure Yellowstone has geysers and fascination, Jackson Hole has pure unadulterated beauty - period.

At the very, very, VERY end...

... the end of a very, very, VERY, long dirt, mountain forest road, a road containing Big Muddies (potholes) large enough to allow a grizzly to sauna soak in, or, at very least, bathe in, we found signs saying: "Dispersed Camping Only" (boondocking) site contradicted by "Camp in Designated Sites Only" - all this RIGHT on the very edge of wilderness territory.
Paid for 4 nights @ $6.00/night = $24/ 4 nights.
Colter Bay? = $25/ 1 night. Then again that had the luxury of flush toilets.
Colter Bay Visitor's Center had well- produced BIRD CHECKLIST.
Today, on the way here, we drove to Cattleman's Bridge to check on river otters (and the immature Bald Eagle) neither in evidence. Brown headed PINTAIL was there. Snake River seemingly running much faster. Could it be the moody, heavily overcast weather making it appear so?
Sad to leave. Excited to go and exist in Nature - just sit, think, be. BTW, where is the bear spray? Afternoon, cold raining now
END (SORT OF) DAY ONE.
DAY TWO or is it Day 3?
Rained all yesterday. Snake River near flooding.
Came into to Colter Bay NPS for wifi (charge card payment), laundry and... SHOWERS (15 min HOT shower.) Still pouring. Tetons completely socked in in cloud. Saturday in camp then leave for...? on Sunday.

Rain - Pacific Creek Forest Camp...

Well, no sooner had we pitched our extra room canopy to serve as galley / cum writing area, when... down came the rain, well, OK, into all travels a little rain must fall... that was three days ago, still, the dirt road 'big muddies' are... bigger and muddier. Pilgrim Creek is in full flood, adding to a rather swollen Snake River. On top of all that, this p. m. after chores at Colter Bay, the Tetons socked in by cloud all day, showed signs of lifting slightly - with AUGUST snowfall (!) Yes, but this is mountain weather.
"... and here we sit like two birds in a wilderness..." well, ja. Go up the trail out of camp and... we are in a wilderness!
Sunday, Colter Bay then South, to ?
Great, dramatic images of TETONS and storm over the major peaks.

Occasional headaches while reclining. Most disturbed night. Finally realized that COVID has not completely healed and is still affecting my breathing,, due to being at 7,033 ft. Seems as long as I am vertical, tension is not too bad.
Breathing issue disappeared ! ALL is well.
Back at Colter Bay, email, etc. access. Stopped in dirt road tracks by the beauty of peaks, snow, avalanche tracks.
Off into the WildBlue South of WY. for a while. Farewell, to the Beauty of the Tetons

South of Lander, WY ( North of South Pass) found Atlantic City Campground <-? Atlantic City is in NJ ! Anyway camp site we have! As do we have thunder and lightning! As I drove out of TETON NP about 100-150 miles got hit by hail storm (again). We outran it... and newly paved road, with no stripes (none) and wet - and hail ! At this moment it has caught up with us again! Pouring!
Came through very rough dirt road of aptly named Red Canyon. Solid, solid red rock on one side, half a mile across the valley - pastel greens - not a sign of red rock. See attached.
We were in and transversed (legally) US Nature Conservancy land, that is an elk migration route, a moose winter habitat and a migratory flight path for birds.
Driving out of Pacific Creek Camp - pulled over and stopped in awe of Tetons, snow and clouds.
In camp, storm found us and dumped what looked like thunder snow - it truly was hail. See attached.
And on that note: "It was a dark and stormy night, and the captain of the robber band said: 'Come closer and we'll snuggle under the duvet after we finish the hot chocolate...' So there. Nooo, truly!Читать далее

Seems battery is short- circuiting. Lights fail but, skittle and kettle have power so last night hot stew (coconut curry leftovers) and... hot chocolate! Who needs light?

"...red in the morning, the Shepard's warning" proven true time and again. More storms as we head east? Spend another night here? Let storm go ahead?
Yup, we decided to let the storm move on, and spent a fascinating long morning touring the historic mining town of South Pass. Fascinatingly restored by WY., two buildings, iron-monger's forge and school house could easily be used as a set in JoR - when that becomes reality. Joe Ellis is Superintendent of South Pass Historic District for permission to film. joe.ellis@wyo.gov .

Back IN THE SNOWIES!

I took morning shift behind the wheel, as a sudden morning shower pelted the Chariot leaving the South Pass WY area. Had trepadation it was going to be a tedious drive, but about an hour later, road was drying out, put Chariot into cruise control and kept it there for a good way at 70 mph.
We switched at Rawlins WY, and soon it was: "Hullo, Snowies!" and, here we are at Willow Creek Campground, what I call Libby Creek. Popped in to the Libby Lake Camp - NOPE Campground Full ! "Watch for lion-kill" came to call from the bridge, of Starship Chariot. Lion kill? What we're not in Africa...?Ooooh! Anyway keep an eye open for moose, cows, bears moving rocks, tree- stumps with long swishy tails qualify too!
Images show our walk last night and delightful rolling hills; the very nice Atlantic City campsite and aspen.
That's it Long day, Connie doing much better at chess!
" It is a Great and Wondrous thing, to Kneel and Kiss the Earth."

All is well. Nice drive from WY., Libby Creek. Connie took over outside Fort Collins. Visited Jerry's ARTRAMA. Think the one assistant remembered me. " So where do you go next?" she asked.
I looked at Connie and Connie looked at me, in unison we turned to look back at the assistant and together we both said: "We don't know!"
However after supper this evening with Connie's sister, Cindy and her husband Charlie, Connie found a website that seem to say that because school is starting shortly there is no longer a lottery for who can get into the Rocky Mountain State Park. So we might know where we are going because I'd like to see that again.
Also Bandolier which seems to be the high on the list as similar to Mesa Verde.Читать далее

We have found a lovely "dispersed camping" site near Red Feather Lake CO. By "dispersed camping" is meant you might have a level campsite - MIGHT, with a fireplace... beyond that, good luck. But, it is free. Oooh, what happens when 'Nature' calls? Find a rock, tree or bush, as (aghem) dispersed as possible.

Near the CO. / WY border in the CO. Foothills of the Rockies.
Absolutely lovely. A lake somewhere over the hill behind us. Not another soul nearby - at all. Dirt road badly rutted leading further up a steep slope. We did first 100 yards, found this site - and stopped.
ONLY hint of humanity a passing car or two on dirt road leading to RED FEATHER campground further below. Is RED FEATHER associated with RED EAGLE we camped at outside Glacier NP ? Don't know, don't care.
Beautiful pastel sunset skies on Eastern horizon last night.
Accidentally upset chess board last night - while reaching for mandatory mug of hot chocolate. Missing in action White Bishop + White Knight. Chess moves frozen until hot chocolate lubricates neurons ( sic?) [LOL] Connie is improving, but getting dispondant at not winning. My offer to handicap myself gets rejected every time. A recent post on a blog of the Forestry Dept that I turned up this morning states that when you see a Bristlecone pine tree in Nature - you will know it. Too true! How will you know it? By the fact that this oldest of living things on planet Earth has weathered storms, snow, ice, rain, heat, drought, sand storms, probably tornadoes and maybe a hurricane or two and still the bristlecone pine keeps on growing. Admittedly slowly, but it keeps on growing.
I had spied what I thought could be a bristlecone last night when I went into dispersed camping mode to answer the call of Nature. This morning I confirmed it is a Bristlecone cone. The botanical name, I think, is pinus longaeta which makes sense to me. Today, I through caution to the wind thanked my lucky stars for a digital camera - and went nuts recording this lone ROCKIE MNT. Bristlecone. I aimed the camera at it and I have numerous shots that I'm hoping to turn into something meaningful and educational.
What a marvelous, and deeply moving experience, to give the oldest living thing on this planet a meaningful hug (after a cautious look over my shoulder - just in case !)Читать далее

Oh Well, I goofed! Back at 'bristlecone'

Just spent the week-end with Connie's relations in the cabin in the Rockies! Hot showers and internet.
Back at the campground where I thought I identified a Bristlecone pine. In short - it ain't. Due to Google research, the pine- needle structure is not - also, altitude - too low and too sheltered. But hey, if it looks like a Bristle, shaped like a Bristle - I spent nearly whole afternoon photographing it. It is just a pine tree, gone "Bristling" - but sure looks like one.

Drove in from Rockies, after needing to get to Ft. Collins, CO. then back to WY. We now have two keys for the Chariot.
Taking up Camp Host here for September. Dark. Pouring with rain. Looks like decent area for bouldering. Plutonic rocks exposed.
Good news, needing to overcome the shock but phones have 5 bars, and there could be Internet access as well - GASP!
Have scoped out 4 hours per day for JBAS writing and product development / enhancement. UNSPLASH. com announced they are developing a monochrome / sepia section. YEA!
Tomorrow into Laramie, in search of showers (YMCA?), laundromat etc. general research, esp. Amazon shipping hub.
Finances are an issue - hmph! when are they not? Anyway.
Seems TX storm Harold is dousing AZ and could be in N CO. Nope! Lightning outside, thunder, Harold is HERE !
More tomorrow if we do not float away... New normal - all this rain? 20 years from now? We'll see.
All is well. Nice roof over head!

Only sign of trouble? Clouds wayyy south on the horizon, else not a cloud in the visible sky.
Assumed official Camp Host duties. Checked fireplaces for embers, walked, introduced self, then sat down, put the Host on Duty sign up - and sort of dozed off in the sun. Too Lekker ( nice)
Went walking, Connie spotted two females climbing a crack on Monk Mtn (?) I watched and was able to interpret the moves and what the lead was (probably) doing.Читать далее

THAT’s it! Find penguin states today is the end of your trip. Damn, why do these computers always have to be correct!? Currently camped in the shadow of the organ pipe, arranged just north of Las Cruces New Mexico. As soon as Connie rises and we get our heads into gear, we hit I 80 west to go see my rock garden and whatever else lives in Tucson. Five months of traveling is almost almost over. Sadly sadly it’s been a wonderful trip again. So educational so interesting so personally beneficial.
Oh no, that’s it the horses Harden shoes chomping at the bit they straining at the HONNE this is the Chariot is basically packed and ready to roll. I refuse to use a Loop on a horse, but today giddyup Byodo to add the horses should be chomping that way along I 80 in no uncertain Menard . Speaking of interstate I never realize that New Mexico was so large. We drove for all the idea we drove from Albuquerque to Las Cruces seeing if yesterday down Aiea down interstate shit made 825 south to hell with Blue I was a and it just went on and on and on I thought of her BlueHighways but anyway we had to make time. But the size of New Mexico really surprised me. On the way north, we camped right here almost in the same campsite, but we took Blue highway so the size of New Mexico really did not penetrate quite as easily. I leave behind or I retain memories of so many memories that the breed just pushes other images aside and more pour in like this morning looking out basically onto the veldt of Africa from the organ pipe. Connie and I are camped north of Sioux City, Iowa right smack bang next to the SIOUX CITY HISTORICAL TRAIN MUSEUM.
Oh yes, it’s that good old game believe it or believe it not yes a time for any one tuned to find penguins and the green blue highway hollers to use a little bit of creativity and to believe it even if I really do not believe it.
Camped next to this Sioux City historical train museum I have met so many historical train buffs it’s quite incredible. This wonderful resort has historical trains cabooses right cause engines steam engines around house and a whole lot more so stay tuned. Will be meeting with executives tomorrow and that could be the start of some wonderful events about wish , about which I am not prepared to discuss at the moment, however.
Believe it or believe it, not together with Connie, my dear beloved partner, and travel partner we found what I believe is the house which might be a little bit on the optimistic side, but I believe I found the house where my grandfather was born and raised outside of Dallas Hutty, Iowa. The Train depot that he told me he left home in Arian Ohio is no more. The township is nothing more than a collection of houses. That’s the Kenwood Township area is a little bit better but that’s it and for now at least for those of you who follow me on penguins , please stay tuned. We have finally been able to overcome and to hook up to the Internet. That is the major issue. Dot dot dot. BELIEVE BELIEVE IT, OR BELIEVE IT NOT.
So insult from the beauty of Iowa, where we have a seen enough green trees and grass and leaves and flowers to to soothe our Arizona eyes for a good while it’s from Connie and Jack , “ aloes van die beste” which of you don’t speak Dutch means everything of the best.
