Day 5 - Rest day at the Nürnberger Hütte

    July 25, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

We were all glad for a rest day today - no new hut to treck to but of course that didn't stop us getting out early and checking out our surroundings.

We arrived in the mist the previous night, so it was amazing to wake to see the valley in bright sunshine, from the Nürnberger Hütte we could even see the Italian border hut on top of the Simmlingjöchl that we had passed yesterday!

The more agile and energetic of us, Sarah, Dave and Alexander headed up the Gamspitze and managed it within 4hrs, including time for a slide down a snow patch.

Meanwhile, mum, Cihan and I had a leisurely start, extended by discovering 4G signal on the balcony and seeing a helicopter 🚁 land from our dorm room! Later found out from the others that it was carrying logs into the valley, probably to reinforce the rickety bridge we crossed yesterday.

We then took a wander to the Freiger See, an alpine lake, where we found the first of a few orienteering pin punchers. 5km at a leisurely pace, returned 4hrs later.

Back for an afternoon snack at the hut, Kaiserschmarrn and some Skiwasser to rehydrate!

Relaxing afternoon & evening and a fencing tutorial from Alexander.
