    September 6, 2023 in Canada ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

And so it begins. Waiting at Pearson for our flight to Barcelona where we will spend 2 days before officially beginning the Camino. While on the flight we met a father and son from Toronto who were doing the Camino as well. They were also going to spend 2 nights in Barcelona before taking the train to Pamplona so we made tentative plans to taxi with them from Pamplona to St Jean Pied de Port.Read more

  • Barcelona day 2

    September 7, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

One more day of exploring Barcelona. We went to Sagrada Familia, a Catholic Church built by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. It is the largest unfinished Catholic Church in the world. Ground breaking was in 1882, expected completion date is 2026. We also went up Montjuic which is apparently the birthplace of Barcelona. We had sweeping views of the Mediterranean and the city of Barcelona. And of course we enjoyed our drinks and tapas. Tomorrow we are making are way to St Jean Pied de Port, France where will will spend the night then begin our Camino on Saturday.Read more

  • Arrived in St Jean Pied de Port

    September 8, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Today we travelled from Barcelona to Pamplona by train. In Pamplona we met other pilgrims and shared a taxi to St Jean Pied de Port, France. That drive might be tougher than the walk ahead of us. It was through the Pyrenees and full of switch backs. I think our driver thought he was in the Monaco Grand Prix. We were all chatty at the beginning of the ride. Once we hit the mountains we all became surprisingly quiet 🤢. We have checked in to our Gîtes and about to enjoy a beautiful French dinner. Tomorrow the adventure begins….1400 mètres of elevation and stinking hot!!!Read more

  • Orisson

    September 9, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

16k to go before we stop for the night.

    September 9, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today we walked 27km and gained 1400 meters of elevation through the Pyrenees. It was incredibly beautiful but very difficult. We took 9 hours to complete this leg. We were rewarded with a great pilgrim dinner with some old friends and new ones. Tonight we are staying in a 17th century monastery in RoncesvallesRead more

Today we hiked about 22km, 7 hours in total with breaks. A beautiful day, sunny and warm but lots of shade. Some elevation but lots of downhill with some crazy rocks to navigate over. Tonight we are staying at El Palo de Avellano with some of our Camino friends.Read more

  • Zubiri to Arre. Rainy day trek

    September 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

What a difference a day makes. We hiked through torrential rain and some thunder and lightning. By the end of the hike the sun was blazing down on us and other than our shoes we were all dry.
We hiked 17km in about 6 hrs including breaks.
Cecile hiked with us today. We met Heather from California who walked with us most of the way but she continued on to Pamplona. We stopped 5kms from Pamplona and are staying in an 11th century church, Trinidad de Arre. One of the pilgrims staying here offered to make pasta for us. Who can say no to Tony from Italy!! About 10 of us went to the supermarket to gather ingredients including under €2 wine. You can’t imagine the chaos in the grocery store with all the different languages.
Dinner was superb. Great community at our albergue tonight.

  • Arre to Uterga 22km 8.5hrs

    September 12, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Our day started off hiking through Pamplona so we took our time and explored the cathedral and some other sites. We bought some ham with the help of Cecile to add to her bread and tomatoes for our lunch today. After Pamplona it was a 300 meter climb. We met a 71 year old pilgrim from Italy who said it reminded him of Tuscany (this is his third Camino !).
After our big trek up it was a treacherous hike down on loose rocks….of course I fell but my pack broke my fall, damn those loose rocks but all is good. We are staying at Camino del

  • Uterga to Lorca 21 km 8hrs

    September 13, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Today may have been one of our hardest days. Lots of ups and downs and the sun was relentless. We started at 7am in the dark. The moon lit the sky for us and the weather was pleasantly cool. When the sun comes over the mountains around 8:30, walking is much more of a challenge. It was nice to meet up with some of our friends today who had moved ahead of us and we had not seen on a couple of day. The father and son from England who were only walking for week, so their Camino is over and Josiah who we met on our first day. We walked with Josiah for a while but he needed to get further on than us so we split. Hopefully we will cross his path again. I think we will. One of the most amazing things to happen today was we came upon a village festival. A villager told us it was day one of a week long celebration. So fun to see.
Today we came across olive trees, fig trees and almond trees as well as beautiful vineyards
Tonight we cooked our own dinner with Cecile. We went to the local grocery store to pick up supplies. The store owner uncorked our wine for us and we walked back to albergue with an open bottle of wine. I love Spain.

  • Wine Fountain (Vino Tinto Fuente)

    September 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

People have many different reasons for doing the Camino. This is why we are doing it….free wine from a fountain. ❤️ Spain
The fountain is part of a winery that once belonged to the attached former Benedictine Monastery of Irache which dates back to the 8th century. It is a beautiful heritage building. We loved that there were very few people there. So serene.Read more

Another beautiful sunny day on the Camino. We got up early and started hiking in the dark to beat the heat. We stopped in Villatuerta for breakfast. Fresh squeezed orange juice, cafe con leche and the best ever croissants. We made good time and arrived at our beautiful albergue with plenty of time to do laundry and enjoy our private terrace before our communal dinner later tonight. It’s getting easier! • Villamayor to Torres del Rio 21km 7 hrs

    September 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

A quiet day on the trail. There wasn’t a lot of elevation and the sun stayed behind the clouds. Otherwise it could have been a hard walk with no shade. Our highlight today was seeing a farmer herding his ducks down the middle of the road just outside of Los Arcos.
We aren’t so fond of our albergue tonight. Lots of people in our room and no real charm to the building , however we have met some very nice people so that makes it ok!

  • Torres del Rio to Logrono 22km 6 hrs

    September 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We seem to be picking up our pace, perhaps we are finally getting into a walking groove. The weather was perfect, overcast to start the day and when the sun did come out there was a beautiful breeze to keep us cool. Today we enter wine country, Rioja region. We passed through vineyards and olive tree groves. The smell of wild fennel growing is delicious! Again we started in the dark and surprisingly there were little biting bugs that were so annoying. Not sure if they were mosquitos or more like black flies. They disappeared once the sun came up. We came across our little cafe along the path which provided some much needed refreshments. We stopped in Viana for more food…we are hungry today. A delicious tortilla and cafe con leche. We walked a bit today with Femka from Holland but who lives in Spain and Emma and Callum, brother and sister from Australia.
We are in Logrono for the night, where it is the beginning of a week long Rioja wine festival. When we entered the city, it was mind boggling to see the city streets filled with people singing and dancing and drinking and dressed in their regional colours. It was tough to navigate the streets to find our albergue. We are now having a siesta before going out to join the festivities….we can faintly hear the music from our room….hopefully we sleep tonight.

  • Rioja wine festival in Logroño

    September 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

What great luck we had coming into Logroño on the first day of their week long wine festival. We could not believe all the people in the streets singing, dancing, drinking and drinking and drinking. They fill up 2 L Coke bottles of wine and drink!’ How will they keep this up for 7 days!!!
We had some delicious paella and wine of course. Had lots of fun people watching. I’m thinking the streets of Logroño will be much quieter when we leave tomorrow
Grateful that our albergue is quiet tonight

  • Logroño to Ventosa 11 km 3.5 hour

    September 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Today we left the chaos of Logroño and back to the serenity of the Camino. However for me (Ann) I had a couple of blisters that were really bothering me so after 11km we had to take a taxi from Navarette to Ventosa. My feet were killing me and I was exhausted. The last 10km were done by taxi. I still managed to enjoy our lovely dinner and our albergue, which might be our favourite so far.Read more

  • Ventosa to Ciruena 25km 7hrs

    September 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Todd walked the entire way today. He started with Claire and Cecile. I took a taxi 10km to Najera to get my blisters looked at in a medical clinic. Of course, it was a holiday in that village and the clinic was closed. Seems like there is always a holiday in Spain. My feet were feeling better after a good nights sleep so I decided to attempt to walk the remaining 15km with Todd and the others. We met up in Najera and we kept on walking. Met a lovely mother and daughter from Vancouver and walked with them for some of the way.
On our way to our albergue in Ciruena we walked through a golf course community which seemed quite deserted. Then we came across a little path to our very cute albergue, Virgin de Guadeloupe. Our host was a tad eccentric but good natured and fun and a great cook.

  • Cirueña to Viloria de Rioja 21km 6.5 hrs

    September 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Day 11 on the Camino. The last couple of days we have walked through small villages that are almost deserted, ghost town like. I think it is the Camino that keeps them alive. When we walked through the larger village of Santo Domingo this morning, 3 men walked through the streets playing instruments to announce the beginning of a festival. It seems there is always a party going on here. We walked a bit with Orin from Ireland.
Dinner tonight at our albergue will paella. Yum

Just a side note….This morning we left a little later than normal so we were the last pilgrims out of the albergue. Our friend Cécile discovered that someone had taken her shoes. Can you believe they were the same shoe, same size just the sole was worn differently. The day was spent trying to find the people who were in our albergue last night. We think we have found them in a town 7km down the road …. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: Cécile took a taxi and found her shoes from a reluctant pilgrim who accidentally took the wrong shoes. Quite a story! Well done Sleuth Cécile!!

  • Viloria de Rioja to Villafranca Montes d

    September 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We travelled 21 Km in 7hrs. The sun was out but the wind was strong so we didn’t get too hot today. We have left wine country and walked past many sunflower fields. The highlight of the day was running into our friend Angela who we met at the train station in Pamplona while waiting for a taxi to St Jean. We walked with her the first 3 days then we separated. So nice to hear her call out our names as we entered the square in Belerado. Unfortunately she injured her foot and is taking a few days off. She said she may bus ahead and walk with us when she is feeling better. Our albergue, San Anton is lovely. No bunk beds and lots of space between beds so it feels like a 5 star hotel. We opted out of the pilgrim meal today and went to the supermarket and bought some bread, cheese, ham, tomatoes, wine, beer, chips and chocolate for a lot less than we would have spent on dinner. We sat outside and enjoyed the view of the church and our laundry….Read more
