    After a couple of quiet days of rain we had the opportunity to finish the Liberty Trail Walk as although overcast and cloudy the forecast for today predicted no rainfall.
    We drove to the car park at Coney's Castle and pitched off in the cloud southward towards Charmouth, crossing fields to Wootton Fitzpaine. From there we turned north westwards to follow a valley up to Stubbs Farm after which we turned southward to cross the A35 at Penn.
    We found an old log to sit on in the woods at Hole Common where we had our lunch. Emerging from the woods it was a short walk up to Dragons Hill where we effectively completed the Liberty Trail. We returned to Coney's Castle via a more direct route from Dragons Hill, crossing the Lyme Regis Golf Course once again then pitching northward through Hogchester farm to emerge at Wootton Fitzpaine once again. All to be followed by the inevitable slog up the hill at the end of another ten mile day.
    All in all, according to our pedometer, we covered a total of 87.7k (54,7m) and walked 118370 steps in completing the walk. It was a walk that took us through some beautiful countryside, as nice as any we have encountered, with rolling hills, and impressive ridge downs separating verdant green valleys. Along the way we were often accompanied by the sound of babbling brooks, birds singing their spring songs and the rattle of woodpeckers as they built their nests. We also witnessed the coming of Spring with emerging daffodils, crocus, snowdrops and primula in the hedge rows. A thoroughly good walk from start to finish.    Weiterlesen

    We woke up to clear skies and decided that a walk by the seaside would be a good idea. We parked up in the NT car park at the top of Stonebarrow Lane, where the views along the coast were beautiful, and set off along the South West Coastal Path through Charmouth. We had intended to follow the low level path under Black Ven and The Spittles but soon found out that land falls had closed the low route. There was a very low Spring tide however so we walked along the beach through to Lyme Regis passing quite a few fossil hunters with their back packs and hammers at the ready. Lyme was looking beautiful in the sunshine and many people were enjoying a walk along the sea front. We wandered out to the end of the Cobb - most unusual to be the only ones there. As we came off the Cobb two bird watchers were getting excited about the presence of an Eider Duck in the harbour mouth - we were a bit too far away to pick it out - but they were very enthusiastic about the find. After that we walked through the town past Monmouth Street to cover a mile and a half of the Liberty Trail leading from the town passing beside the River Lim then we followed the route through fields housing sheep to Dragon Hill. We had proposed to return to Charmouth via the high level cliff top footpaths but these were also closed due to landfalls so we had to take the even higher route which crossed the Golf Course on the top of Dragon Hill. The long slog up Stonebarrow Lane to the top of the hill at the end of our 10 mile walk was a bit of a teaser.Weiterlesen

    We were advised that we could book ourselves in for the Covid Vaccination so, planning ahead for our imminent return to Hampshire, we selected the BIC at Bournemouth for the place to receive it. We were booked in for late morning, so drove over after breakfast on a fabulous sunny day - barely a cloud in the sky. The vaccination centre was brilliantly organised and very efficient and we both felt quite emotional upon receiving the jab - our spirits were lifted.
    We pitched out onto Bournemouth sea front for a quick walk along the promenade, where we heard a multitude of different languages amongst the people passing by. Everyone was clearly enjoying the sunshine, some youngsters were sunbathing in cossies on the beach and a few people were in the sea - not bad for February. Everybody was social distancing but we did not linger - returning to Mosterton via Morrisons at Bridport for a necessary provisions top up.
    Sunday was another sunny day so we completed one of our longer walks which took us through Corscombe - ten miles in all.    Weiterlesen

    We spent the remainder of the week walking around the area dodging rainfall, and spent our Saturday reading the weekend newspapers. The weather broke on Monday so we completed our section five of the Liberty Trail.
    We drove to Coney's Castle car park and set off northwards across Lambert's Castle Hill. There were some commanding views from the top around the whole area and we could see across the countryside to Chesil Beach and Portland and to the south across Charmouth. We descended through woods along Hawkmoor Hill, where there was some very impressive moss growth on the trees, and then across some very soggy fields passing around Gashay and Grighay farms. We reached Thorncombe via drier, high level, footpaths after Sadborrow Pound and found a bus shelter in the village in which to have our lunch. We returned to Coney Castle via quiet country lanes picking up the path at the bottom of Hawkmoor Hill.    Weiterlesen

    Day 1000 of our travels coincided with Karen's birthday. We celebrated by speaking to all of our family and enjoyed video calls with our lovely grand children. Bottle of Moet arrived from London in the post and some lovely chockies from Bristol. The girls in Brisbane sang Karen "Merry Christmas" although Summer did not join in. We devised a short walk from Beaminster to get us out into the country air. We enjoyed a great comedy moment as Karen chose the wrong side of the very muddy track on Common Water Lane, sinking into the sludge at the end. We returned via the Ridgeway in persistent rain and both needed warming showers on our return to base. On a good day the views would have been spectacular from the top of the ridgeway,
    In the evening we had a delivery from the Indian restaurant in Beaminster. As nice as it was we both preferred the recipes we had been doing ourselves from the "Fresh India" book Kirsty sent us earlier in the year
    On Thursday we walked five miles to Crewkerne for a visit to Lidl and Waitrose and were treated to a hailstorm on the way back.
    We enjoyed the Moet over our weekly (Friday Fizz) lockdown zoom call with Jo and Syd.    Weiterlesen

    This was a bleak week weather wise with dark skies, strong winds and buckets full of rain. We did manage to pick out some drier periods and managed to complete our next stage of the Liberty Trail. This took us from Wayford to Thorncombe via Winsham and Forde Abbey across fields and down quiet country lanes. The Abbey was shut to visitors and the path around the rear of the Abbey to the gardens under water due to all the rain. We followed the country lane up to Thorncombe, returning to Wayford via Maudlin Cross and some very soggy fields.Weiterlesen

    Another bitingly cold day here in Dorset. There was a layer of thin snow in the yard outside glistening in the morning sunshine - we took a walk from the cottage towards Misterton, returning via Seaborough predominantly on country lanes. The fields, when we crossed them, were solid under foot with the frost. The temperature was 0 deg C and with the wind chill minus 8 deg C. Our faces were tingling on our return.
    Wednesday was forecast to be sunny and partly cloudy, so we decided to return to West Bay to complete the walk to Golden Cap. Another very cold day with a maximum temperature of 3 deg C although the wind chill took that down to minus 7. The coastal path was magnificent, the sea was calm and the views fabulous from Thorncombe Beacon and Ridge Cliff. The walk took us from sea level to high level three times on the way - we had our packed lunched at Seatown prior to the final climb up to Golden Cap, five miles west of West Bay.
    We didn't linger long at the top due to the cold wind and returned on the inland pathways as much as possible. A great walk by the sea, with more spring lambs in the fields and the sun a bit higher in the sky, even through the cold, it felt like Spring is on its way.    Weiterlesen

    Wednesday was a major food shopping day, so we tripped down to Bridport for the whole food shops, Lidl and Morrisons. We are trying to only shop once every 3 weeks - which we have so far managed. Means we are exposing ourselves to any risk far less often. With a large fridge and freezer and much more storage space than we had in the van this works quite well.
    Thursday was a very wet day, so we stayed inside with K at the sewing machine.
    Friday and the weekend saw us walking out again in the countryside around us, after the rains it was very wet underfoot.
    On Monday the weather turned very cold, the forecast was predominantly dry with a possibility of some short snow showers. We wrapped up warm, drove to Misterton once again and completed our phase three of the Liberty Trail an 8.5k section from Misterton to Wayford.
    It was bitterly cold - 1 deg C with a wind chill effectively taking it down to -6 Deg C. A lot of the ground underfoot was hard with frost but there were some very wet and muddy patches too.
    We enjoyed the walk through the countryside passing fields containing sheep with lambs by their mother's side - the first we had seen this year. At Clapton Farm two Emu were rummaging behind one of the outbuildings - not what we were expecting. There were carpets of snow drops in the church yard at Misterton and crocus under the tree at Wayford where we stopped briefly for a tea break.
    We returned to Misterton via Clapton Mill and Seaborough.    Weiterlesen

    Great news today upon our return from our daily walk.
    Kirsty interviewed amongst others today for a promotion at work and was successful.
    So many congratulations to our wonderful daughter who has been working her socks off in ITU during this pandemic - Sister Kirsty - we are very proud.Weiterlesen
