    November 26, 2020 in England ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Day six of our walk had us driving a little way to Hamble-Le-Rice where we parked up mid morning. We then wandered up to Hamble station and took the train to Woolston three stops down the line. The train was virtually empty with us the only occupants of our carriage.
We walked across the Itchen Bridge as far as Town Quay - all was very quiet and most amenities closed. From there we retraced our steps back across the bridge, dropping into Woolston and south eastwards along The Weston Shore where we stopped for our picnic.
We passed through Netley and onward along the beach, in front of the oil storage depot, before reaching the nature reserve at Hamble Point. From there we finished with a short walk to the ferry point on the River Hamble, we were looking at Warsash on the opposite bank.

We drove around to Hythe so we could complete another section of The Solent Way. Parking in the Oak Road car park in Dibden Purlieu we met up with Graham and Vivien. We then wandered together to the pier at Hythe where we enjoyed a Costa Coffee (outside) and a natter . It was nice to catch up again in the great outdoors. Graham and Viv left us at the entrance to the nature reserve and we continued on our way along the trail to The Royal Oak.
In the evening A completed a vegetarian Pithivier pie that he had started constructing the day before.
The following day we had a lazy day at the van with K embarking on a new Christmas decoration using the foundation piece quilting method.

Day four of our quest to walk The Solent Way. We drove to Beaulieu where we parked up prior to setting off under a sunny and cloudy sky.
We walked first to the north alongside the main road as far as The Royal Oak on the way to Dibden Purlieu - we then retraced our steps to Beaulieu and from there the track to Bucklers Hard. This pathway had been much improved since we used to walk it with our family, it now being stoned up through most of its length, meaning we didn't have to dodge through muddy puddles.
We lunched at Bucklers Hard before continuing onward to the Old Barn at St Leonards.

    November 18, 2020 in England ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

We needed to return some books to the library in Chandlers Ford so we took the opportunity to go for a walk through the woods at Micheldever. The weather was very overcast and the ground underfoot quite wet in places. The woods were quite colourful in their autumn colours with some trees still covered in berries.Read more

    November 17, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Thursday was a major re-stocking day, on which we hit the supermarket to buy enough to see us through the next three weeks of lock down.
At the weekend we completed some walks around the area once again -on both Saturday and Sunday managing to dodge the showers that were coming in from the south. On Sunday the spring tide was high and the onshore wind made the sea quite exciting.
On Monday we completed part three of The Solent Way. This time we drove once again to the monument at Lymington then set off walking eastwards across the countryside, passing the golf course and cricket grounds on our way. The walk was predominantly flat and the countryside mostly open fields, we passed a couple of sites which were used by the RAF in WW2 for the D Day campaign. Alan has been reading the book by James Holland which gives a very good account of the unfolding action on D Day, then beyond as the war progressed into France, from both the Allied and German perspectives. We don't know how lucky we are - anyone whinging about a lockdown should be made to read J Holland's accounts of the sacrifices made all those years ago.
After five miles we reached the ruined church and barn at St Leonards, at which point we turned back to retrace our steps on the same route. Just over 10 miles in all.

    November 11, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Day two of our Solent Way walk. The section we completed was between Lymington where we parked the car and Keyhaven Marshes where we got to on day 1.
We parked up by the Monument to Harry Burrard Neale, an Admiral of the Fleet in 1700s which lies on the old family estate. From there we walked westwards through Lymington and out once again across the salt marshes. The weather was dry but there was a stiff breeze.
The bird life was once again feeding on the shoreline and in the marshes.
We returned to the car by a more direct route along quiet roads - out of the wind - and via the main street of Lymington.

    November 9, 2020 in England ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

We drove to Milford on Sea on a very wet morning with the intention of completing the first five mile section of The Solent Way walk.
The sky was very grey as we arrived, but we set off in the hope that the weather would clear up a bit as forecast.
The first section of the walk took us along the shingle spit to Hurst Castle returning to walk eastwards through Keyhaven and along the sea front by the salt marshes.
We did get a bit of a soaking walking to the Castle but after that things brightened up a little with short showers passing through.
Plenty of birdlife o be seen on the salt marshes and on the sea shore. Curlew, Dunlin, Sandpipers, Oystercatchers, Egrets, Ducks and Gulls aplenty.
The Isle of Wight was at times covered in low cloud and we could see the rain approaching.

    November 6, 2020 in England ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Another beautiful day so we went for a walk eastwards along the river towards the Titchfield Haven nature reserve which was closed to walkers due to the lockdown. We had our lunch on the sea wall next to Stubbington where two elderly lady cyclists were debating whether to strip off and go for a swim. We watched them warm themselves in the sun beneath the sea wall whilst we had our lunch- they obviously decided the wind was too cold so they resorted to a paddle only.
Birds aplenty on the sea shore, swans, ducks, turnstones, egrets and cormorant all enjoying the autumn sun.
