    Aldeburgh

    We thought we would have a look at Aldeburgh, a famous small resort in Norfolk and favoured by British Prime Ministers when they want to show how patriotic they are. Nothing like a seaside holiday with a pebble beach and beating rain.
    We, however, enjoyed glorious weather - we have not seen rain for weeks. We booked for one night into a campsite close to the seafront, and within walking distance of the town. We walked from the site along the seafront. The shell sculpture was looking resplendent and the town is delightful.
    Pubs were packed with people watching the England world cup quarter final and shops were closed early for the occasion.
    We took a walk along the beach to see the Marello Tower and a look at the River Alde which was busy with sailing craft - by the time we had got back England had prevailed and everbody was happy.    Les mer

    Southwold

    A few miles up the coast to that other famous coastal resort - Southwold, where we are booked into the council run campsite for 4 nights, ready for us to drive to Lattitude festival on Thursday. A pretty basic campsite, but great location on the coast.
    Another lovely coastal resort which was bathed in fine weather when we arrived.
    We took a walk along the pier and marvelled at the ingenious and amusing arcade games in "The Under the Pier Show." The water clock is interesting too.
    Following day we took the small ferry across the river to see Walberswick and to walk through the marshes to Dunwich.
    Dunwich is interesting, a thriving port at one time and large town which has all been lost to the sea. The museum tells its story very well.
    It became cloudy and temperatures dropped - a chilly bbq followed. The first meal we've eaten inside for weeks. Hopefully summer has not come to an end already - we are very much enjoying the heat!!!    Les mer

    Minsmere

    Cycled a few miles down the coast to Minsmere the RSPB nature reserve.
    What a fabulous place- we had a great day looking at all the bird life and there were lots of friendly people in the hides to tell us what were looking at.
    We saw - amongst others - all kinds of Teal and apparently a quite rare pair of Roseate Teal were there but we failed to pick them them out amid the thousands, kittiwake, gulls of every description, geese, ducks, avocet, godwits etc.
    We had a sighting of a chick Ruff by the waters edge, which looked scraggy. We also saw a hobby and a marsh harrier.
    We took a couple of pictures but realised that a big lens is required to do it properly.    Les mer

    Latitude Festival

    The festival is open and we arrived in blazing sunshine for what we know is going to be a great weekend.
    Had a bbq before entering the arena to watch a bit of Don Giovani at the theatre which was televised direct from the Royal Opera House. 20 minutes of which was quite enough - if we knew italian or the story it would have helped enormously. Seemed to be about some filandering Italian gentleman who was having a good time with the ladies.
    We then watched a feminist group bang on about something or other and quickly moved on to some hip hop street dance crew who were at the opposite end of the spectrum - six girls shaking their booty under the direction of a male emcee. Seemed like the latter were having the most enjoyable time.
    Brilliant - and the festival starts in earnest tomorrow    Les mer

    Latitude Day 2

    The first full day at the festival started with a visit to the comedy tent where QI were doing a live show - very funny great start to the day.
    Met up with our very dear friends from Chandlers Ford. So lovely to meet up and we had a quick catch up before going our separate ways.
    The food section had bread making (real bread obviously - not your supermarket stuff you understand) which was interesting.
    Watched a couple of Sadler's Wells dance routines on the Waterside Stage - excellent.
    Tried to get into a preview of Suffrageddon which is a new show in the Hamilton mould destined for the big stage but was full so took our chance on The Flight an immersive sound experience which was very good.
    Fitted in a viewing of an excerpt from the all male Swan Lake production - brilliant.
    Watched a Birmingham Repertory show entilted Pop Music which was based around a couple at a wedding re-aquainting themselves after many years - the story written around some of the great dance and disco music of the last 30 years - only three performers - it was funny, emotional and brilliantly performed.
    Even managed a bit of music - La Femme sounded good. Caught the end of the Charlatans. Naaz on the Sunrise Stage had a great support and rapturous reception.
    Checked out before Solange came on stage - rumours were rife that Beyonce was going to appear but we will never know.
    Opened a bottle of fizz when back at Hazel as we finally had a tenant move into our house today - a cause for celebration.    Les mer

    Latitude Day 3

    14. juli 2018, England ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    Started with Comedy tent "Where's the F in News" mildly amusing
    Food demonstration Indian Cooking
    Then watched The Pheonix Dance Company perform "Windrush - Movement of the People" which was outstanding, followed by an excerpt from Sylvia, a new musical which was performed well.
    Simon Evans in the comedy tent was very funny. Should have stayed for Harry Hill but instead joined a very long queue for the theatre - big mistake, as the full barrier came down just as we were about to get in.
    Instead we went to watch and participate with the Bhangra Dancers who were great fun..
    In main arena watched The Vaccines who were good prior to the Killers who were brilliant.
    Finished with a visit to the theatre to see "Paris De Nuit" by Reciquel Contemporary Circus which was very good    Les mer

    Latitude Day 4

    Kirsty joined us for the day and pitched her tent next to Hazel.
    Started the day - Alan and Kirsty to comedy tent to watch Dylan Moran - vey funny then caught the end of Black-Honey in main arena who were good.
    Karen enjoyed the Gospel Choir on the Waterfront stage, followed by Middle Eastern cookery demonstration
    Met up at main stage - Jeremy Loops and his and his band from Capetown were very entertaining, and Kirsty skipped down to the front to join the crowds dancing to his wonderful music.
    The Ballet Boyz, who performed a range of dances were very good. We watched them perform at the Waterfront stage in extreme heat and a blazing hot sun, eventually having to move into the shade at the comedy tent.
    Joel Dommet in comedy tent was quite amusing
    Back to main arena where Rag N Bone Man was brilliant - a man with real soul.
    Stayed there for Wolf Alice who were an angry punkish band then to end Alt J who performed well.
    A fantastic weekend under blazing skies. So much seen, and so many wonderful memories to take with us.    Les mer

    Wells-next-the-Sea

    Next stop CL site at Grove Farm where Kirsty has joined us for a few days.
    We found this to be a lovely site in amongst all the animals - free range hens and ducks aplenty and with cattle in the adjacent field.
    Hens were very inquisitive entering our van in earch for tit bits - one even stole a piece of salmon from our hot bbq.
    Took a boat trip to see the seals at Blakney Point - over 8000 turn up in early spring to pup - there were circa 2700 pups this year. Some linger on to moult - as usual they looked cumbersome out of the water but very graceful within it. Grey and common seals together.
    Derek, a member of the boat crew was very amusing and made the trip all the more enjoyable.
    We landed at the Point for an hour and had a look at the other wildlife - Sandwich Terns and their chicks, avocet etc all very quiet and beautiful.
    Kirsty and Karen went for a paddle through the salt marsh to see the open sea.    Les mer

    Wells next the sea

    We visited the RSPB reserve at Titchwell - again on the marshes with a mix of salt water and fresh water marsh.
    On arrival the guides were all very excited about a visitor to the fresh water marsh - a Lesser Yellowlegs which should have been in America but somehow had ended up here. Many spotters out to have a looksee. All were very friendly and were keen to point it out - It is a member of the sandpiper family. At the time we saw it its legs were a murky brown from the marshes.
    We were also pointed out a pair of Bearded Tits which were tucked away near the reed beds which is also quite a rare sighting. These are beautiful birds, a lovely golden brown    Les mer

    Market Harborough

    Market Harborough as Alan has a seminar to go to on Friday
    Picked a site with a lake for relaxation.
    We had a look at Foxton where the Grand Union Canal has a famous 10 flight lift of locks arranged in two flights of 5. It is also the site of the inclined plane which was designed and built in 1900 to speed up the process of getting from one level to the other.
    There are plans underway to re-establish the lift which looks like it would cost a fortune but would be very interesting.
    Free range eggs from site shop are fantastic.    Les mer
