    Tintagel

    July 9, 2024 in England ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Arrived in Tintagel at lunchtime for our first day on the SWCP. The aim being to hike from here to St Ives with a mix of wild camp spots and campsites. After the biggest Cornish pasty I've ever had and there have been a few, ;o) we headed out to get some miles under our belt before setting up the tents on the only flat spot. Got scared by some cows only to realise after an hour there was a fence between us!Read more

  • Port Issac > Padstow

    July 10, 2024 in England ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

While we were having breakfast in Port Issac a kind man let us use his sunny wall to dry out our trainers and socks from the wet morning ferns.
Refueled we headed towards Padstow playing tortoise and hare all day with two lads also hiking the SWCP. They spurred us on to make the last ferry leaving Rock over to Padstow (by the skin of our teeth). It made the day a hot sweaty 18+ miler but were rewarded with a fish and chip supper. Hiked another mile to some dunes near Harbour Cove for an amazing wild camp spot.
This was also the day Debbie found a tick nestled in her groin! A lesson learned, wear your waterproofs through the ferny sections!

  • Harlyn Bay to Trevose

    July 11, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After an amazing camp spot just outside of Padstow we woke to a beautiful morning. Another hot day of hiking with spectacular scenery took us to Trevone Bay Beach where Debbie went for a refreshing swim and I headed to the cafe for an iced coffee in the shade. Tired today after the 18 miles yesterday but the views on the path making it as beautiful as always.Read more

Beautiful blue skies, cliff top views looking down onto a clear green sea. Watergate Bay we will be back to visit you! But for now we’re heading into a busy Newquay. The YH was full so a campsite with the luxury of hot showers and a pizza feast. Walked up to the YH for a glass of vino and cuddles with the most gorgeous Vizsla pup.Read more

  • Newquay to Holywell Bay

    July 13, 2024 in England ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Soo Fistral Beach is longer than it appears! A hot day, the soft sand and a full backpack don’t make it any easier. We walked up to Pentire Head where we came across the lovely Lewinnick Lodge. They were so welcoming, filling up our water bottles even adding cucumber. Onwards to The River Gunnel where we were able to cross via the footbridge at Fernpit Cafe. Past Holly Joke beach finally reaching the sand dunes of Holywell Bay.
After a drink in the Holywell Beach Bar we headed into the dunes for what was to be a cold nights camp. Well worth it as sunset was glorious. Oh & no blisters on my feet but managed to get one on my calf. Can only think it was from a plant! Another reason the wear trousers!

  • Holywell Bay to St. Agnes

    July 14, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Packed up quickly after a cold nights sleep in the dunes knowing there was a hot coffee waiting at the beach bar. There we chatted with fellow hikers who had also camped in the dunes. They had a magical encounter with seals 🦭 whilst taking an early morning swim.
Refreshed we had a lovely hike towards Perranporth, chose to walk barefoot on the beach rather than through the energy sapping dunes. Had an encounter with a nudist showing off his tackle but other than that an uneventful hike. Decided to take a dip in Trevaunance Cove, grabbed some food before heading out of St. Agnes to find a beautiful spot up on the headland to set up our tents. The sunset & sound of the waves made for my most favorite camp spot of the week. Little did we know then that this would be our last wild camp of the trip.

  • St. Agnes > Portreath

    July 15, 2024 in England ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

After a great nights sleep we woke up to a grey morning & drizzle. Packed up and headed for a NT site at Chapel Porth in the hope of a cafe. Arrived to find it all closed. Luckily for us someone arrived and let us fill our water bottles and shelter for a bit from the rain. We headed for Portreath where we found a cafe which was so warm and cozy we didn’t want to leave. Between us we decided to skip the next two days & get the bus from here to St. Ives. It turned out the be a good decision as Debbie wasn’t feeling too good.Read more

  • St. Ives

    July 16, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

After finding a great campsite within walking distance of the town (Ayr Holiday Park) we set out and explored St. Ives (minus the backpack). Lots of lovely food, shopping and generally being tourists.

  • St. Ives > Zennor

    July 17, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

After a days rest we decided to tick off another section of the SWCP, as it was meters from our campsite it was a no brainer. We’d also heard the section from St. Ives to Zennor involved clambering over ‘boulders’, the chance to walk it without our packs was too much to resist. It was around 7 miles so not far but yes it was challenging. We were rewarded with lunch at The Tinners Arms in Zennor before catching the bus back to St. Ives. Then a relaxed evening drinking pimms and eating a superb meal at the campsite.Read more

  • St. Ives > Watergate Bay

    July 18, 2024 in England ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Sadly we packed up and caught the train out of St. Ives to make our way back to Newquay to collect Debbie’s car. There we drove up to Watergate Bay for our last night and camped at Tregurrian Camping & Caravan Club Site which is a short stroll from the beach where we spent the rest of the day chilling and swimming.
Had a glass of wine watching yet another beautiful sunset before being chased by a swarm of wasps on our way back to the tents. Our last night before the long drive home. See you next year… 😎
