  • Sick Travel Day

    14 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

We traveled from Moab to Bryce Canyon today, and we're staying at the Bryce Canyon Pines Campground tonight. It was about a 5 hour drive. We arrived and fell asleep.

Both Doug and I are very sick. Mine started with a sore throat on the 10th, followed by low grade fever, runny nose, congestion and extreme sinus pressure. I'm past the worst of it.

Doug actually wasn't sick until the evening of the 13th. Whatever it was before, probably just dust in his nose, was not this. His symptoms are different than mine, however... started with sore throat, then fever much higher than mine, chills, muscle aches, and a bit of sinus.

We keep trekking on, but it has put a kibosh on the hiking which was what we were looking forward to the most. Until today, we were getting in 2 miles a day. Now that Doug is sick, I'm nursing him, making him curry bean soup and ginger tea, and covering him with every blanket and flannel shirt we have.

Written the next morning, September 15th.
You know how men are when they are sick,.. and Douglas tends to be pretty dramatic when he's well, so yeh, he's been extremely vocal about it. I try not to laugh at him because I know how miserable he is, but he is quite hilarious at times. Last night he broke out singing "Fever" in the middle of the night. "Oh my God, babe. Tomorrow you're going to take me out and shoot me. We'll dig a big hole, and you'll shout me." A little bit later, "F@#% Fauci!" Then he comes up with an elaborate plot to rob a pharmacy of hydroxychloroquine, leaving our cell phones behind at the campground so they can't track us. "Every time something cold hits my skin, it feels like a third degree burn!" Now I can't laugh because he's very sick, burning up. "How long have I had a fever? Three days?" "No, it's been 36 hours, " I reply. I have my arm over him to help keep him warm. I check his CVAT to rule out kidney infection, negative. We turned the van on twice during the night for a few minutes. It's 42 degrees outside at 7 am. I made another batch of ginger tea as we make our shopping list together.

On the drive, we stopped to view Black Dragon; well I did. He was sleeping in the back. We drove through scenic byway 12 which was gorgeous! The red rocks are even more red here. We stopped at Dixie State Park and walked around the parking lot for 5 minutes. The beauty of this earth never ceases to amaze me.

  • Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort

    15 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

We arrived straight away at our campsite at the Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort. My phone says it's 10:30 am when we arrive, but it's actually 11:30. They allow us to check in early. The woman at the desk says that some phones pick up Arizona Standard Time. There is that one part of Arizona that does not switch to Daylight Savings Time. For some reason, my phone is there. It's a little confusing, and just adds to all of the other disorientation we are feeling.

The resort is out in the middle of nowhere and we have a completely private back-in site surrounded by trees. The Wifi works amazing throughout the park despite being a distance from the clubhouse. They have everything here... condos, yurts, covered wagins and cabins.... tennis, horseback riding, trails, mini golf and transportation to a multitude of tours including jeep, ATV and canyoneering tours. This would be a great place to bring the family for a week. The pool, showers and laundry are not too far away from our site. It's a warm day in the sun but also crisp, about 70 degrees. We decide to hit the hot tub. The hot water and sunshine should do us some good.

Back and forth between the hot tub and jumping into the cold pool, I float for a few minutes and return to the hot tub. I repeat this cycle 5 times until my legs feel like noodles. It's so relaxing. The sun is intense. My nose and forehead pinken.

What else do we do today besides hot tubbing? We showered and shaved. I cooked soup for dinner. We walked around a bit. I video-called my girls and granddaughter. I engage in my leadership class small group zoom meeting that occurs every two weeks. The topic is focus, staying focused on important tasks that align with daily, weekly, quarterly and annual goals.

Retiring into the van after sunset, we watched Handmaid's Tale and I made Doug my "Hot Toddy" drink made from extra creamy oat milk, agave nectar and cinnamon and heated in the microwave. The new season of Handmaid's Tale is coming out this month, so we're starting from season 1 and watching them all again. I ask Doug, "Why do you like this show?" thinking it's more of a chic flic show. "This could be our future," he replies. "We have to wake up and fight for our freedoms." One benadryl and my Invisalign at bedtime... this is my new remedy for TMJ.

  • Zion National Park

    16 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Doug is feeling miserable today, but he drove us into Zion. We came in through the east entrance... free entry with the annual pass.

I was in Zion National Park once before in 1989 on a family trip in a 37 foot RV. We thought my Dad was going to drive us off a cliff, but we all survived. It is a gorgeous National Park. Many people say that they think it is the most beautiful of all the National Parks.

Driving in we wound around the mountain pass, oohing and aahing over the beautiful mountains and scenery. I took pictures and navigated us toward the visitor center. The Park is busy today, and there is no room to pull over at any of the overlooks. Windows down, I snap pictures from the passenger seat of the van. We saw rock climbers and got out my new, never-used-before binoculars which worked fantastically. We saw Big Horn sheep, about 20 of them. We went through a 1.1 mile tunnel through the mountain that was built in 1939. The Park is just as gorgeous as I remember.

We're limited today due to the illness, so we will not be able to see the whole park. In 1999, they started a new shuttle system. A visitor will park at the shuttle parking lot or the visitor center, then take a free shuttle up to the north road through the park. This is the only way to see the upper half of the park. We obviously are too sick to get on a shuttle. I could have gone, but I would have to leave Doug in the van without AC, and it's just too hot. Also, there was absolutely no place to park. We'll just have to come back... maybe next year.

Doug "parked" at the end of the loading, unloading lane by the visitor center, while I went in to get the passport stamped and look around. It's a large visitor center "gift shop" with plenty of interesting merchandise. I bought a couple of stickers and got my passport stamped.

After deciding that the shuttle was not an option for us, I drove us back out through the east entrance to our campsite. Doug slept in the back. Coming out of the park at noon, there were plenty of places to pull over at the overlooks and I did a few times. I got out and climbed a few rocks and took some pictures.

Doug has taught me a few things on this trip... manual gear shifting and nasal douching to name a couple. Both have been very helpful. Driving through the mountain passes, I shifted into 2nd and 3rd gear instead of using my brakes.

We arrived back at the campground early. What to do the rest of the day besides wash our sheets? Nothing, pretty much nothing. It's the weekend and the campground is filling up. There's a Glamping Event this weekend, but we are not feeling social. The hot tub is full, so no hot tub today. We sat at our campsite and hung out the rest of the day. Doug was so sweet and picked me flowers. I put it in a toilet paper vase. Twenty wild turkeys passed our campsite as we sat outside together. We retired early. Maybe tomorrow we will feel better.

  • Las Vegas Here We Come

    17 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Well it's been a miserable last few days. We haven't been able to do much more than commiserate together and watch Hulu. This morning we at least feel like we can think clearly... a little less disoriented. The van is cleaned up and ready to roll, and Vegas is just 3 hours away. Bye, Zion Ponderosa. We will be back to play again.

On the home front, the bathroom sheet rock and drywall is up.

  • Nellis Air Force Base

    17 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 91 °F

It feels so much better to be at lower elevation and have sufficient oxygen again. Both of us today feel like we have magically returned to the land of the living.

We drove back through Zion on the way out, from the east entrance and exiting the south entrance of the Park. The South Campground inside of Zion looks really nice and Springdale, Utah, the town just south of the park entrance looks like a lot of fun. Definitely plan to come back.

We left Zion area one day early, despite campground reservations, because of the elevation challenges. The elevation with a head cold just wasn't working for either of us. The disorientation was crazy. I won't tell you some of the crazy conversations and thought processes that we had; they were close to delirious. The Arkansas license plate was one of them. There was an special weekend event going on at the campground this weekend for the Glampers. They had a live band playing until 11 pm. Normally we would be out there partying with the rest of them, but the music was hurting our heads. Earlier when we felt a slight inclination to take a turn about at sunset, we didn't ... only because we didn't want to see or talk to people... forget spreading germs; socializing takes too much energy.

Let me tell you a little about the disorientation... first of all, we can barely hear because our ears are plugged and the constant elevation changes when driving challenges this even more. My eyesight has changed on this trip. My readers were no longer working at all; I couldn't see my phone to read at all with the readers that I had. So I bought a stronger level of readers at the dollar store. I lost my sunglasses that were bifocals the night of the Red Rocks concert, so driving and reading my map screen at the same time is impossible. We can't smell because we're all stuffed up. Taste is limited as well. I don't think we have covid, but who knows and I really don't care. We feel dizzy. We feel short of breath. We can't remember anything; the recent days are all jumbled together. The lack of oxygen to the brain and the general inability to read the world through our normal senses creates a complete disorientation.

For example, yesterday when I went into the visitor center at Zion, I went to stamp my National Park Passport book. When I opened the book, I saw that I didn't have a stamp for Bryce Canyon. I had a moment of panic. I thought we went to Bryce Canyon. I even titled a post in my blog "Bryce Canyon". Why didn't I get the stamp in my passport? This sent my brain spiraling in complete confusion for the next hour. I looked through my picture gallery and the dates. I looked at my calendar. I looked at the tracker on the app of exactly where we have traveled. I wasn't able to solve the puzzle. My mind was reeling. If we didn't go to Bryce, why not? Did we forget to go? Did we go and don't remember? Did we consciously decide not to go and don't remember the decision making process? I had no clue. All I could do is drive, stop and climb a few rocks while Doug was passed out in the van, and then drive some more until it didn't matter. In the end, we think that after the night of very little sleep, when Doug was having hallucinations of robbing pharmacies, we decided to not go.

I drove and Doug slept on the sofa, moaning occasionally about his ears being clogged, blowing his nose or hacking up phlegm. We have to repeat everything we say three times because we can't hear. The windows of the van are down as we drive in an attempt to keep us cool. We've gone through about 4 rolls of toilet paper for our noses alone, and bought Vaseline to soothe our crusty lips and noses.

We're in the desert now. As we drive I-15 and turn off our exit to the military base, there's a fog-like look to the air all around us, clouding the Vegas skyline ahead. It's not humidity; it's dust. We're on Las Vegas Boulevard. We pass a dirt riding area with side by side ATVs and then a couple hundred dirt bike riders with flags on their bikes. We pass the Las Vegas Motor Speedway with the big sign announcing NASCAR coming October 14-16.

We arrived at the Nellis Air Force base at about 1300. Doug is a Veteran and with his military ID has full access to any military base, commissary and military campground in the US. It's $27 a night to stay here in the upgraded camping spot. We checked in and found our campsite.

Another purpose of coming to Las Vegas for a day was to see if I wanted to upgrade the van to a larger camper. We went to an RV dealership and looked at a couple of B+ RVs including a used Airstream Atlas. It was very nice, but wasn't a long term match for me. Also the final price tag would not be a wise purchase. $1500 a month for 20 years! I'd rather invest that money in real estate/land once the prices drop a bit. So for now, I will keep the van. I'm trying to treat her a little kinder and be grateful for what I have. Doug on the other hand, at 6 foot 3 inches tall, is tired of hitting his head on cabinets. I get to hear the expletives about 10 times a day. He does have a small cut on the top of his head, and I have a 5 inch long wound on my leg from running into a drawer. It's super tight quarters.

Heading back to the campsite, I realized I've not named my van yet. "Little Miss" came to mind. Doug says, "Little Miss the target".

We went to the shop on base to get some wine. Yes, we ARE feeling better... tomorrow we will check out the commissary. At the campsite, we enjoyed our wine and cooked dinner together... chicken and pasta with a garlic cream sauce, spinach and sautéed carrots. And we talked about the future...

Thank you, Little Miss, for accompanying us on this adventure.

  • The Venetian

    18 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

We arrived on the strip by early afternoon. We were thinking about scouting the Waldorf Astoria where we will be staying later this week... see if we could find parking for the van. All the parking in the strip seems to be in parking garages in which we will not fit.

After spotting the hotel, we ride on through the first time and head to The Joint Chiropractic where I can get an adjustment. The young doctor used the activator on my jaw and did his thing. Once again, we returned to the strip. I called ahead to the Venetian to find out where we could park. "Valet for large vehicles," I'm told.

We get in the long valet line, and Doug hops out to wheel and deal. He's good at talking to people, "Hey, brother. Hey, I'm in this van right there, and I was wondering is it possible to get one of these parking spots right here? How much do I need to pay you to get one of these parking spots? How much did that guy pay you?" He secures a spot for $20.

Inside the beautiful resort, we fight our way past the smoky casino to the shops and restaurants. Doug wanted to take me on a gondola ride. We had an hour wait, so we found the bar and had a glass of white wine while a group of performers in traditional Spanish dress danced and sang.

Our Gondelier loaded us and another couple about our age from Long Island on the gondola. We put our seat belts on so, God forbid, we wouldn't fall out and drown in three feet of crystal water with coins at the bottom. The seat belts have to be for keeping drunk people seated. There were plenty of drunk people for sure. Facing forward with the other couple facing us and the singing Gondelier behind us, we rowed down the Grand Canal vowing we would do it for real in Venice one day.

  • Kingman, Arizona Route 66

    19 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

We rolled into Kingman, Arizona at about 8 pm last night and discovered that we were on Route 66, the Get Your Kicks Route from Los Angeles to Chicago.

We took a few pictures at the Route 66 museum and visitor center and headed across the street to Mr. D's Diner. It's a 50's style dinner and Doug has malts on his mind. The chocolate malt was delicious.

From there, we went to the Dodge dealership to stay the night in their parking lot. I have a 7:30 am appointment to get the AC fixed. I did payroll and some other work. Unknowingly, we were next to the train track and the train woke me up repeatedly all night long. I swear it sounded like a helicopter overhead and I was envisioning surveillance thermal scanning our van for signs of life. When daylight came, I realized it was just the train.

The day at the Dodge dealership started out rough. They didn't have all the parts. There was confusion about exactly what the Limon, Colorado dealership had done. So a few phone calls and another diagnostic by their technician revealed we wouldn't need the condenser after all, only the compressor needs replaced. I finished payroll and worked while Doug paced.

We were provided a complimentary shuttle ride to the historic downtown area where we had been last night. We were hungry, so after touring the visator center and the steam engine, we returned to Mr D's for their famous monster burger platter. It's a four pound burger complete with all the vegetables, a large dill pickle and a pound of French fries. If one person finishes the whole thing, they get a free tee-shirt and their picture posted on Instagram. We're going to share it. I ordered a banana shake and we shared that monster burger. I couldn't finish my half.

We had time to waste, so we walked Beale Street. We stopped at a biker shop which was a fun experience. I bought a Route 66 biker doo rag. There are lots of car garages here in Kingston that specialize in vintage cars. We peek inside. Half way down the street, Dodge calls and says that Little Miss is ready and she's blowing 49 degree air. Hallelujah. It's only 1 pm.

The shuttle driver told us that open carry is legal in Arizona. Also, every other year in May they have a drag race down the main street from one police station to the other. The black marks on the street at the start out point are evidence of the fun this town has. On to the next stop.

  • Winery in Williams on Route 66

    19 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

We're headed toward the Grand Canyon, but a few miles before our exit, I see a sign for Historic Route 66. "Get off here!" I point and Doug exits the I-40. And that's how we found ourselves in this quaint little town of Williams, Arizona.

We looked at vintage cars, $500 cowboy boots, hats, magnets, signs and everything else you can imagine. I updated the van with a few more magnets I'd collected.

We detoured into the Grand Canyon Wine shop. "Wine tastings," the sign said. I'm really glad Dougie likes wine. Sabrina is our sommelier. The couple next to us is from Canada and celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary. Doug orders the cabernet Voyager, and I order a flight of wines to taste several. The Voyager is the best, and two hours later and a little buzzed we leave with a bottle of Voyager and a bottle of Traveler.

We walked around town for another hour and then headed to the Love's parking lot to sleep with all the truckers.

  • Grand Canyon

    20 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

The Grand Canyon is grand indeed. I was last here in 1989 on our family RV trip. I recall driving an hour off the beaten path and pulling into a gravel parking lot with one small building. We hopped out of the RV, walked to the edge of the canyon, got our views and hopped back in the RV to leave. This experience was quite different.

We came in the south rim entrance up from Williams and quickly found our way to the visitor center and gift shop to get the passport stamped. After looking around a bit, we headed back to the van to cook breakfast which was an egg, turkey bacon, avocado and horseradish cheese sandwich. Doug filled our camelbacks and packed the backpacks while I cooked.

We headed to Mather Point overlook to begin our Rim Trail hike to the Yavahai Point Geology Museum, stopping at every point for pictures. A bushy squirrel was begging for food. Doug shared his sunflower seeds and the squirrel ate out of his hand while I stroked her back.

It was an in and out hike and all in all was about 2.5 miles. I tracked it in All Trails. It's not much but it was about all we could handle still recovering. We decided that we'd like to come back to Grand Canyon and do a 3 day, 2 night camping, hiking and river rafting tour.

On the drive out, we saw several elk, one of which had massive antlers.

  • US Air Force Thunderbirds

    20 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

Nellis AFB is home to the Thunderbird fighter jets. While looking for the carwash, we happened to stumble acrostic the Thunderbird Museum and went inside. The fighter jets are taking off and landing throughout the day and evening, and the sound they produce is loud like a continuous sonic boom. We learned that the jets can travel at more than 1500 mph. The Thunderbird pilots have their own designated parking spaces.

We arrived to the campground on base just before closing, checked in, and went straight to the showers. After getting hooked up at our campsite, we sat outside in our lounge chairs and had a beer while watching the fighter jets and Blackhawks fly over us.

6 o'clock pm rolls around on a military base, the Retreat is sounded. Over an intercom can be heard for a 1 mile radius, a trumpet playing, followed by an organ version of the Star Spangled Banner. Wherever you are on base, the protocol is to stand and salute or place your hand over your heart while the Retreat sounds. We stood and Doug held his salute stance for the next two minutes throughout the Retreat.

I cooked chicken Curry for dinner and we opened the wine. At 9 pm as we were falling asleep, we heard a trumpet playing Taps.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the hills, from the lake, from the skies.
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Go to sleep, peaceful sleep, may the soldier
or sailor, God keep. On the land or the deep, Safe in sleep.

Love, good night, must thou go,
when the day, and the night need thee so?
All is well. Speedeth all To their rest.

    Fades the light;
    And afar Goeth day,
    And the stars Shineth bright,
    Fare thee well;
Day has gone, night is on.

Thanks and praise, for our days,
'Neath the sun, Neath the stars, 'Neath the sky,
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.

  • The Waldorf Astoria

    21 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Before we left, Doug booked us two nights at the Waldorf Astoria, and here we are.

Right now I'm in the bathtub with a glass of red while Douglas plays Westland Survival. It's his equivalent to my blogging. We surely get dopamine from it.

Room 1703, we've moved in for two days. This is my first bath since leaving Florida. We were joking yesterday about how it now feels normal to go three days between showers. Honestly, it doesn't even bother me anymore, evidenced by the fact that I don't even think about it.

Parking the van was difficult. We drove around town for an hour on a wild goose chase, finally to be directed to the garage of Planet Hollywood across the street. They didn't charge us to park there in the locked gate area for oversized vehicles. We were instructed to remove our bikes and put them inside the van so they wouldn't be stolen. By the way, Little Miss is all clean inside and out and the sheets and blankets are washed. Thank you, Doug.

It was only a 40 minute walk through a smoky casino, down the street, up and down escalators and across streets twice, through the hotel, up to the 23rd floor to check in and then to the room. It's one of those fancy elevators where you have to use your keycard to make the elevator go to your floor. And there's a valet closet where staff can leave things for us without coming into the room.

We have an awesome view of the strip. Can't wait to see what it looks like tonight. This weekend is the iHeart Music Festival.

    Las Vegas, beware.

  • Two Nights on the Town

    22 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Doug and I have two nights here before he flies out tomorrow.

    Night 1
We first went to the Sky Lounge here at the Waldorf for drinks and appetizers before walking down to the MGM to see the bronze lion. It is the largest bronze statue in the western hemisphere standing at 45 feet and weighing 100,000 pounds. Then we crossed the street to walk through New York.

Lyft took us to the Rio. Doug once won second place in a poker tournament here and he tells stories of gondolas and the Rooftop Voodoo bar, but everything has changed. No more gondolas; the rooftop bar is closed. But the poker table where he played remains and he points it out to me. The poker room is a ghost town. We escaped the suffocating smoke and got an Uber to Paris. The Eifffel Tower closed just minutes before, but we made note of the times so we can return tomorrow.

    Day 2
I went pool side this morning to enjoy my fruit under an umbrella after a healthy dose of Vit D. The water is chilly, but refreshing after 10 minutes in this unrelenting desert sun. We each have $25 credit per day, so I got a Corona Premier; $9 spent.

Doug went to get some breakfast and some medicine to help him breathe and keep his ears clear on his flight home tomorrow. His friend Nike from North Carolina is here in Vegas for the IT Conference and we're planning on meeting up this afternoon. He and Nike were in the Army together in Germany, from where their unit was deployed to Iraq.

Kris is in Los Angeles visiting her daughter and will arrive tomorrow afternoon. I purchased tickets for the iHeart Music Festival for tomorrow night.

I owe Dougie a foot rub in the pool, so he better get his butt out here soon. Nevaada, Nevahda... how do you pronounce it? We took random surveys throughout the grocery store and the consensus is that Doug is correct. It is pronounced Nuh-vaad-duh.

We both are missing the quiet solitude of nature here in this constantly moving city of lights and noises, but I'm reminded to make the best of each day and live in the moment. I will appreciate every place, person and situation for the beauty that it holds. On the home front, the tile is getting laid in the bathroom, my daughter was rear ended by a tree truck- a 6500, and my sister is fighting covid all by herself.

Nike and his son came out to the pool for the afternoon. It was great to meet and get to know them. Doug got his foot rub after three more random people at the pool confirmed that he indeed was correct in the pronunciation of Nevada.

The four of us walked over to Alexxa in Paris for dinner. We wanted to get a good view of the Bellagio fountain across the street but it was too hot to sit outside. Dinner was nice and afterwards we said our goodbyes to Nike and his son. They are flying home tonight.

  • The Bellagio and Cirque du Soleil

    22 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ 🌙 81 °F

It was a beautiful night in this brilliant city. From the top of the Eiffel Tower to the night Bellagio Fountain, to the Cirque du Solei O.

Waiting for the show to begin, we had a couple drinks at a bar in the Bellagio where we entertained a family from Orlando celebrating three family birthdays. Doug was talkative, telling our story and they were eating it up. They thought he was joking at first. "We're celebrating our one month-aversary," he tells them. On the story goes about how we met and our travel adventures. "You seem like you've known each other forever," she says. "Well that's what happens when you have to shit in front of each other.... and then drain it the next day." We were laughing our heads off.

The O was fabulous, but was not what I expected. It is a combination of trapeze, artistic diving. high diving, contortionists, clowning, and water acrobatics. The stage is a pool and at times it is covered by platforms. There were underlying themes and meanings of which I feel I'd have to watch the show a hundred times to grasp them all. One of them was, in my words, "Freedom replaced one caste system for another". The scene depicts artists swinging and diving from a swinging liberty bell, while a crying, modern Frenxh maid walks around with her laundry cart picking up the dirty laundry of the ladies and gents dressed in garments of the 1700s... white wigs, red coats with tails and large hoopdy dresses.

On stage left above, the singers are performing behind the glass andl the music is being sung live. She is wearing a beautiful long white dress with ornamental sleeves and she dances and moves her arms as she sings. On stage right through the glass, there is viewing of the technicians at their computers coordinating the background music and sound effects, etc. It was really nicely done.

  • iHeart Music Festival- Surprise Opener

    23 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ 🌙 88 °F

When arriving in Vegas, I didn't know the music festival was going on, so these tickets were last minute. For years, I've heard about it on the radio and seen it aired live and dreamed of going one day, so there was no way I could pass it up.

Today I said goodbye to Doug and picked up Kris at the Las Vegas Airport. I booked a stay at a local campground.

Kris and I took a Lyft from the campground to the Bellagio. We had a couple extra hours and she's never been to Vegas before. It was important that she see the Bellagio Fountain. We walked through the Bellagio and the Aria before heading to the T-Mobile Arena.

We purchased drinks and while waiting in line for the second round, I began talking to the gentleman behind me in line. He works for the venue and said, "Do you know who the opening act is?" I knew the line up, so I started guessing. "Oh no, he's on at 11... She's not on until 9pm..." I went through the whole list. "So who is opening?" He said he didn't know, but I think he was just playing with me. I pretty much got an invitation to an after party with this kind gentleman, but I declined.

Returning to my seat, the first performer had just come on stage. It kind of looked like Pitbull. It certainly sounded like Pitbull. He was acting like the real Pitbull, but I didn't believe it. He looked younger and had a short beard. I really thought it was an impersonator. "Is that the real Pitbull?" I asked our new friends sitting in front of us who are from Austin and own a timeshare in Madeira Beach. They come play in our back yard for a week every April. They come to the music festival every year, so I figured they would know. It certainly was Pitbull and he was amazing!

We were sitting in the crazy section 212. Everyone loves Lionel Richie, but I think a couple people were doing cocaine or something. These songs take me back to my roller skating days. I remember a couple's roller skate to Lionel Richie. Czytaj więcej

  • Horseshoe Bend

    24 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Horseshoe Bend is a U shaped turn of the Colorado River around the canyon rim near Page, Arizona. We drove out of our way to see this.

It costs $10 to park, and there is a three-quarter mile walk to the viewpoint. It was sweltering hot but so worth it. Glad we went. Czytaj więcej

  • Rancho Sedona RV Park

    25 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We made it all the way to Sedona last night. With a last minute reservation, we arrived here at the RV Park after dark and got ourselves set up by flashlight. This might just be the best RV Park ever, certainly the nicest one I've stayed at. Our premium site, the only one that was available, backs up to Oak Creek and we can here it bubbling from our RV site. These sites go for $114 a night, so they better be premium. Everything is stellar and the bath and laundry areas are very clean.

It was dark driving in, so we are anxious to explore. Sedona is a lot different than I expected. It's chilly in the evenings high 50s. It's lush green, with trees and creeks and mountains. Downtown is quaint, upscale and a bit rustic like a small mountain lodge type of town.

We made Spaghetti sauce and drank a bottle of wine before falling asleep with the windows open.

Today we plan to go into town, do a jeep tour and come back for walking and shopping Sedona. Tomorrow, we're planning to drive and hike the 4 vortexes.

    25 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We rode our bikes to downtown Sedona and had a couple of hours to shop before our Jeep tour. We got some caffeinated beverages for energy and hydrated well as it was very hot. We shopped for gem stones, hats, t-shirts and magnets. I bought a couple of stones, a carnelian and a lapis, and Kris bought a ring. Czytaj więcej

  • Sedona Pink Jeep Tour

    25 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

We signed up for the Pink Jeep Touch the Earth Tour that explored Sedona's vortexes. Michelle was our tour guide and there were five of us on the tour.

We drove past, around and behind Thunder Mountain, the very mountain that the Disney ride is modeled after. We went to Cathedral Rock which is one of the four vortexes. We learned about local wildlife including the many varieties of rattle snakes and the javelinas, but we didn't see any today. We did see plenty of cactus and prickly pear fruit, Juniper trees, agave, yucca, and the Ocotillo "Little Torches". We heard that we should make it a point to go to the Airport Mesa, another one of the vortexes.

We went to the Boyton Canyon area and Fay Canyon. Here we went off road through steep and bumpy terrain and puddles to Mystic Vista for a view. We took a few minutes to feel the energy.

Sedona is a dark sky community, meaning at night they have a lights out or low lights policy. The purpose of the dark sky policy is to protect plants and animals in their natural environment.. Another great benefit is that you can see all the stars in the sky.

After the jeep tour, we headed across the street to the Cowboy Club where we enjoyed cactus fries and prickly pear sauce. Kris had a Prickly pear mojito that was so strong she could barely ride her bike back to the campground.

  • Boynton Canyon Trail

    26 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

We woke up at 6 am to make it out early before the heat. We thought surely we'd be done by 10 am, so we brought only 1.5 liters of water each and some sunflower seeds.

About 20 minutes in, the sweatshirts came off. It was 60 degrees. We took the first cut off to the right to go to the Vista. It was a beautiful view. We took a moment to feel the vortex, place out our stones and set our intentions. Yesterday, I purchased a lapis stone. I was attracted to this stone and asked the lady about it. "It's a stone of Egyptian origin that targets the throat Chakra." Of course it does. I've been struggling with using my authentic voice and have been experiencing severe jaw pain from aTMJ flare up. I receive a message... "Don't think about the whole project because that is shutting you down and preventing you from getting started. Instead receive guidance on what you should do each day."

Only about 1.5 miles in, we contemplated whether this was the end of our hike or if we should go further. This hike not counting the one mile diversion we took, is 6 miles. Kris wanted to go a little further down the trail.

As we hiked, we heard rumors along the way about a specific "alligator tree", branches on the ground specifying an alternative path, and a "birthing cave". Birthing cave got my attention. At this point, I wasn't sure we'd make it there and back but my fear of missing out would not let me turn around. Kris was hungry. We stopped and sat on some rocks to eat some sunflower seeds.

I was using my All Trails app and kept checking it only to find out multiple times that we weren't on the right path. Three and a half miles in we made it to the "birthing cave" we thought, just based on what people on the trail were telling us. However, it was actually The Subway cave. There were two different ways up. One was a very steep narrow climb that required a lot of upper body strength and no falling or slipping. I made it one-third of the way up this and realized I couldn't do it, so I had to maneuver my way back down with a steep drop below me. I made it. Today was not my day to die. I found the alternate path around the side. That path was still a steep climb and I used branches and rocks to pull myself up.

At the top, we sat inside a cave. I now realize this is not Birthing Cave, as that is on the Long Canyon Trail. I can't imagine the Hopi women coming up to this cave to give birth. It was a pretty strenuous hike. Whatever it is called, it was serene and had beautiful views. We rested and took it all in before hiking back down the three miles to the parking lot.

It was a 6.3 mile hike that took us 5 hours. It had an 823 foot elevation gain, and we burned almost 2200 calories.

  • Airport Mesa Grill

    26 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

The airport Mesa is another one of the four vortexes where the electric magnetic energy is stronger. People come to these vortexes not only for the beautiful views and sunsets but for healing and spiritual renewal.

Kris and I were so exhausted after our hike that we almost didn't go. We also had rain this afternoon and it was cloudy, so we weren't sure how much of a sunset there would be. But regardless, at the last minute we decided to head that way.

The last half mile of the hike did my knees in, so I couldn't walk from the restaurant to the Mesa overlook, but Kris did while I reserved a table.

The Mesa Grill sits on the airport and from the patio area where we ate, we had beautiful views of the red rocks, airplanes landing and taking off, and the brilliant sky from the setting sun.

  • Birthing Cave at Long Canyon Trail

    27 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

I had to go back to the Birthing Cave. I woke up and my knees were stellar, so I headed out in the early morning. As I approached the trailhead, there was a young woman there. "Are you going to Birthing Cave?" She asked. "Yes, I am," I replied. There was absolutely no phone signal there so we couldn't access All Trails or the maps. But, I was prepared and had downloaded the map ahead of time. I asked her if she'd like to join me.

We headed down the trail. "We're looking for the wooden fence and we turn left there," I told her. We made one premature turn, but quickly got back on track. I could see Birthing Cave on the map and the GPS was working on my phone which allowed me to see exactly where we were on the trail.

She is from Oregon and goes on road trips, camping in her Ford Explorer as she travels. She looks young, early 20s maybe.

I told her about my hiking experience yesterday and how we were looking for the Birthing Cave. I told her I was a midwife and that's why I was so intrigued by the site. Well, it was almost like it was meant to be. This young Pilgrim who joined me on this trail is enrolled in a "midwife" program. She is enrolled in the Free Birth Society Birthkeeper's certification course. Apart from anyone's views on this newish trend in freebirthing, we could hold space together. She came to this place without ever attending a birth up to this day, but just knowing that birth should be a sacred space where a women holds sovereignty and power. We are here for the same reason.

I applaud her for her journey, so young. She is birthing herself, starting a new business preparing and delivering meals for postpartum mothers. Starting out in life, hoping she will have her own children one day. I'm ready to retire and pass the baton to another.

We make it to the top after a steep climb at the end which required careful foot placement and hand holding of rocks to steady and pull myself up, careful to avoid the cactuses.

Once atop, the sun was hot and bright. It was steep and the rock was slippery and difficult to find a place to grip myself. How did the Hopi women get here and give birth here? Not impossible, for sure. These were strong women. Resilient women who were used to living in the wild. Another young woman from Minnesota was there. She also travels alone, sleeping in her pop-up tent on top of her vehicle.

It was difficult to take pictures as the sun was so bright and I couldn't see the picture on my camera. I randomly snapped, hoping I would get a few good pictures.

After 20 minutes in the Birthing Cave, it was time to make my careful descent down the steep slope, backwards. "What is your name?" I asked her. Victoria and I shared info and hopefully she will look me up and contact me.

Thinking back, I wonder if Native American women did birth here or if they just named it Birthing Cave because it resembles a vagina. Well, it does!

  • Page Springs Winery Tour

    27 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

I headed up to Page Springs to hit a few wineries before heading out of the area. This is a self-conducted tour, by the way. My first stop was Page Springs Cellars. This winery was delightful and I spent my time enjoying my plush suite indoors. The patrons around me were all European so their language only made the experience more exotic for this pure-blooded, at least fifth generation American.

I ordered a flight tasting, a glass of my favorite Colibri Mourvedre, and the Mediterranean Sampler. Everything was wonderful and I left with two bottles. Behind the tasting room are some of their vineyards and barrels. I took a walk around before heading out to the next winery just yards away.

My second stop was Oak Creek Winery. I ordered a mixed white and red flight of wine and enjoyed while sitting outside by a fountain that sounded like a live creek. Nearby was a group of seven African American military retirees with matching hats. They came in with a 2.5 foot loaf of French bread in a bag which they passed around the table and each pinched off a hunk. They get more and more lively the more they drink. One of them breaks out in doing and starts dirty dancing to Tiesta's The Business... I love hearing their chatter. They are from all over, several from Detroit and they vacation together. They've been vacationing together for many years now.

My last stop is Javelina Leap. All of their wines are dry, bone dry, which means they have less than 1% sugar. I've never heard that terminology used before, but it is a thing. Bone dry is my style in wine. I talked to Kim who is the wife of the owner. The parents live on the back of the property and Kim is married to their son. They live at the front of the property with their two young sons. Their motto is to only make bone dry wines. If you like sweet, they serve sangria for you.

I said goodbye to Kris today. At home, our friends and family are preparing for the imminent hurricane, Ian. Because of this, Kris feels called to return to check on everything sooner than I can drive her there. I know it's been a very tense time for everyone back in Florida. I keep having flashbacks to Irma (another hurricane that stared with I).

  • Ghost Town, USA

    28 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

I slept at a Conoco near Flagstaff on 89 North last night. Got up early and headed out by 7 am.

Driving on 89 North, I passed ghost town after ghost town. It left an unsettled, eerie feeling. This is Navajo country. It's desert sand for miles as far as you can see; no water, no cattle, no businesses besides an occasional gas station.

On the sides of the road are Navajo arts and crafts for sale, flea market style, but they are closed; it's only 7:20 am. I passed communities of dozens of modular homes, each matching the other, and plenty of run down trailers. A single wide trailer might have ten parked vehicles outside and another ten that are junked nearby. On 160 East, I spied glittering specks in the terra cotta sand. Is it gold? No, it's broken glass and litter everywhere for miles up and down the road. It makes me sad and disappointed, but I'm not sure who or what to direct my disappointment. Poverty permeates this area, and I can only imagine all the vices and evils that accompany poverty are here as well. After watching Wind River a few years ago, a movie based on a true story of missing women in Wyoming tribal lands, my imagination runs wild. I do not stop here. I have no pictures.

  • Four Corners

    28 września 2022, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Four Corners is where four states meet... Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico all come together on a T. It's on tribal land, and they charge $8 per person to enter.

This wasn't a planned stop, but it was on my route and I couldn't miss the opportunity. Four Corners is located in the middle of nowhere. The roads and property leading up to the actual center are run down. The bathrooms are closed and roped off with a sign that says, "No water." Along all four sides of the venue are booths with vendors selling Native American jewelry, t-shirts and other Native American artifacts and memorabilia. I bought a Four Corners magnet for Lil' Miss, took some pictures and headed out to Mesa Verde National Park.

There was 10 miles of construction just east of Four Corners with rough gravel roads and potholes. I made it through and to Mesa Verde just a little over an hour east.

At Mesa Verde, I stopped at the visitor center first and walked around outside, inside the museum exhibits and the gift shop. I stamped my passport and went to buy a stamp when I realized that I didn't have my wallet with me.

I returned to the van and searched everything four times, trying to stay calm and focused.. I looking in every nook and cranny and even under the seats. It wasn't there. I tried calling Four Corners but just received a voice-mail message. Doug was helping me too by calling around and helping me stay calm. I went back inside the visitor center to see if it was there, retracing my steps and asking multiple park rangers. It was not in the lost and found. I left my name and number in case they found it, and returned to the van to look again. I checked my bank accounts and credit card accounts and nothing was unexpected.

Four Corners was just over an hour away, even longer with construction delays, but I had to go back. I returned to Four Corners, receipt in hand, to retrace my steps. I talked to the lady at the entrance and the people at the administration office. I spoke to the vendor who sold me the magnet, checked the parking lot where I was parked, and drove real slow checking the sides of the road. Nada. At the construction stop, I asked the DOT employees, the girl holding the stop sign, and she radio'd to her team. I even called the tribal police department.

I called the 800 number at Chase Bank to see about freezing my cards, followed all the prompts and waited for a representative. Finally, they said, "Sorry, we can't help you. Call back another time."

My mind is obviously somewhere else today. I'm thinking about home and the hurricane making landfall this afternoon... my daughter and her family, Doug, my brother and sister, friends, and the birth center and staff. I'm thinking about them and praying for their safety.

I proceeded to return to Cortez, Colorado the town nearby Mesa Verde, thinking about what I would do next. Certainly I will take pictures of all my cards in the future and place one card somewhere safe in another location. I did have $500 cash, and that could surely get me to a Chase Bank to get more cash to get home.

Driving back into Cortez for the second time, I see that the Fiesta Twin Cinema is playing "Don't Worry Darling". That message is for me. I needed to stop at Walmart to get a new septic hose, as the one that came with with the van fell out of the compartment. The sewer hose compartment on this van is a flawed design that never would lock correctly. Doug and I had discussed this and knew it was just a matter of time before the slinky went slinking down the road behind Little Miss. Well today was that day.

I pulled over in the Walmart parking lot and took a minute to see if I could stay there overnight. Yes, RV parking is allowed here. Very good. I reached down for Betty Boo (my pistol) and some cash to go into Walmart... and what did I see laying right there between the underneath of the passenger seat and the middle console that I created to store things? My wallet!

Man, I was so relieved. I can not tell you how much. But still shaken from the stress of the day. I went in and bought my favorite Walmart bakery item, Peanut Butter Fudge No Bake Cookies, because I needed to stress eat. I got fuel in the van, cleaned the windshield, parked the van and set up for the night, and cooked dinner.

Tonight I will be taking pictures of all the cards in my wallet and putting them in my phone and Google drive.

I'd like to think there was some greater purpose for all the hoopla of the day, that I am exactly where I need to be. And now I can say that I literally went to the Four Corners of the earth looking for something.... and I found it. It was right here all the time.
