Arrived in Chicago at 1.30pm. Had to get through long queues at the airport for customs and immigration. Then got picked up by Shirley and Dick with a great " Anja" sign 😍.
We arrived at our hotel the Hyatt Regency after going around in a few circles and checked into our room.
We then went to Little John's -a sandwich-chain to get something to eat and a mini walk outside.
It is very cold outside so a beanie and gloves are a must! ❄❄⛄
Time difference to Australia 14 hours behind!!!!!! ⏰
PS: Dick told me that Chicago has the highest murder rate of all of the US!Read more

This morning we had breakfast at a little cafe in the underground Pedway of the Plaza. Some nice pancakes eggs and bacon with a hot chocolate from Krispy Doughnuts.
I discovered they have take away cups with re-sealable drinking holes so you don't spill the contents!
We walked to Millennial Park and looked at "The Bean". Nice metallic ornament in which the skycrapers are reflected and an iconic piece of Chicago.. Afterwards we grabbed an Uber to the Shedd Aquarium where we spent a few hours.
The Aquarium was very big and housed beluga whales, seals , otters, penguins , fish, reptiles and other mammals from all over the world and local North American and South American animals.Read more

Chicago - Aquarium

The Aquarium was amazing. Heaps of displays, a short mini Beluga whale live show and lots of North and South American animals but also animals from around the world.
There was a touch pool and I could touch starfish which feel hard crusty and spiny on top due to their exoskeleton. I also touched sturgeon fish which felt smooth and slimey 🐳🐟🐠🐙🦀🐢Read more

Drive from Chicago IL to Grand Haven MI

This morning we had breakfast at the hotel - a bagel (a mixture of of Pretzel und bread) which was yummy and some yoghurt.
We then packed all our things and drove the 3 hrs home to Shirley and Dick's house in Grand Haven in Michigan. We arrived at 3pm.
On the way we stopped at a rest area and I got a taco at Taco Bell which was tiny but nice.
A great thing in the US is that all food places give you drinking water free if you ask for a cup.
Also if you order soft drinks like coke and fanta, you get a cup and you only need to pay once and you get unlimited free refills 😱.
In the afternoon we went to a department store called "Meijers" which is like a "Globus" in Germany. Although here it only has outlets in the midwest of the US.
A strange thing to get used to is that you don't pay the price you see at the item you want to buybut that the tax is added at the checkout which makes it confusing.
And everything comes in bigger sizes - 1kg coffee, 4l (1gallon) milk cartons etc.
We had dinner and watched an episode of Aerial America which is a show showcasing the sights of each state which i liked very much. The episode was of the history and sights of Dallas -Fort Worth where we will go later.Read more

Shirley made beautiful oatmeal and blueberry breakfast this morning 😊.
Then we went for a drive to P. J. Hoffmaster State Park and checked out the displays at the visitor centre. We also saw some birds and a chipmunk and some squirrels eating the seeds at the bird feeders out the front. In the afternoon we went for a walk around the local cemetary to see if we can find deer and we saw three wild white tail deer and lots of squirrels and birds 😍🐿🐦.Read more

Shirley made a nice breakfast cottage cheese with bacon and cheese and orange pieces.
We then went to the city centre for some sightseeing and shopping.
We also looked at the beach of the lake and seen the lighthouse and red little house next to it which were pretty.
The area is known for blueberry farms so I went to a store called Blueberry Haven which sells all things made from blueberries (soaps, coffee, jams etc). There I found 2 blueberry jams for mum and dad and grandpa.
I also found a petosky stone for jodyne which is a fossiled stone from the town of Petoskey up north in Michigan where they exist and a nightie for myself with "Moose America" on it.
-We had a nice dinner at Ryan's and Sherri's house and Ryan gifted me a whoopie cushion 😂😂.
This goes back to when Ryan was given one as a kid and pranked Shirley many times.Read more

Grand Haven MI - to Cave City Kentucky

We left home at 10am and set off for a long drive down to Cave City Kentucky.
After a few bathroom stops and a lunch at macces we got to Cave city at 5pm their time. They are 1 hour behind Michigan time in the Central Time Zone. Michigan is in the Eastern Time Zone.
After checking in and finding out that each hotel here in the states has coffee pod machines and free ice cube dispensers we set off and had dinner at the dog pound hotdog cafe.
This cafe has all quirky decor related to dogs and its owner Big Jack was a super friendly and chatty guy who told us what we should see in New Orleans.
His hotdogs were very nice and all handmade and named after different dog breeds!
We then were invited to use a marker and put our names on the building.Read more

Mammoth Cave NP Kentucky - Nashville TN

For breakfast I had some bagels (Shirley's fault she got me addicted 😂) and joghurt at Super 8 hotel in Cave city. There isn't really anything here but it is a gateway to Mammoth Cave National Park.
At 10 am we did a 2 hour historic guided tour at mammoth cave.
The cave has more than 400 miles (644 km) of mapped passageways and ranks as the world's longest known cave system. Mammoth Cave National Park was established in 1941, designated a World Heritage Site in 1981 and became the core area of an International Biosphere Reserve in 1990.
The tour was 3.2km in length, took 2 hours and included 540 steps.
There were sections you had to squeeze through and they had funny names such as Tall Man's agony and Fat Man's Misery.
At the souvenir shop i found a shirt for dad and a magnet.
We continued on our drive to Nashville after the tour and stopped at Wendy's for a burger for lunch.
We arrived in Nashville at 2.30pm.
We parked in town and went around the main street called The Boulevard for 1 hour where i found coasters, a cap for opa and a handbag.
The main street is loud and full of bars that have live music, boot shops, souvenir shops and neon signs. Similar to Las Vegas.
We then went to the hotel to unpack.
Fot dinner we went to hattie b's hot chicken as Hot Fried Chicken is traditional for Kentucky.Read more
