Unsere ersten freien Tage haben wir direkt für einen größeren Ausflug genutzt & sind für zweienhalb Tage nach Tofino gefahren.
Dieses gemütliche kleine Städtchen liegt an der Spitze einer Halbinseln entlang der Westküste am Ende des Pacific Rim Highways. Tofino & Ucluelet (das "Schwester"örtchen daneben) sind als DIE entspannten Surferorte Kanadas bekannt. An der Cox Bay, dem Chesterman Beach und dem beliebten Long Beach im Pacific-Rim-Nationalpark gibt es Sandstrände mit ganzjährigen Surfplätzen. Dementsprechend tummeln sich hier viele gelassene, offene, lockere Freigeister.
Die Region ist durch wilde Naturlandschaften mit Seen, Buchten und Regenwäldern geprägt. Tofinos Strände und der uralte Regenwald ziehen allerdings nicht nur Surfer, sondern auch Naturliebhaber, Camper, Walbeobachter, Fischer und alle an, die einfach nur der Natur nahe sein möchten. So wie wir.
Allerdings müssen wir auch dazu sagen, dass wir zur `Nebensaison` nach Tofino gereist sind und damit der Tourismus deutlich entspannter und weniger war, im Sommer tummeln sich dort die Menschenmassen.

Was ganz besonders an Tofino & Ucluelet ist - es gibt nur lokale Geschäfte. Große Geschäfte und Franchiseunternehmen sind dort verboten um die Kreativität und die unternehmerischen Bemühungen der Einheimischen zu unterstützen. Neue Unternehmen müssen im November eröffnen und wenn sie die harte und langsame Wintersaison überstehen, werden sie mit boomenden Sommern mit viel Tourismus belohnt. Man weiß dort also, dass man mit seinem Einkauf immer lokale & "echte" Menschen unterstützt.

Wir verbrachten unsere Zeit mit Spaziergängen am Meer, mit Wanderungen durch den Regenwald, mit Erkundungen durch Tofino & Ucluelet, mit Kaffee zum Aufstehen und Abendessen auf dem entspanntesten Campingplatz seit langem, mit Aperitif in der Hand und Blick auf die Wellen und Meeresrauschem im Ohr; begleitet von der Leichtigkeit dieses Ortes.

Die Umgebung um Tofino ist wunderschön. Es ist ein Ort zum entschleunigen. Der Inbegriff eines verträumten, entspannten Lebensstils, in dem die Dinge nach einer anderen, langsameren Uhr zu laufen scheinen.
Aber es ist auch ein paradoxer Ort - ein Ort, an dem man abschalten und gleichzeitig neue Energie tanken kann, ein Ort der Entspannung und gleichzeitig des Abenteuers. Die uralten Landschaften beflügeln die jugendliche Fantasie.

We used our first days off for a longer trip & drove to Tofino for two and a half days.
This cozy little town is located at the tip of a peninsula along the west coast at the end of the Pacific Rim Highway. Tofino & Ucluelet (the “sister” town next to it) are known as THE laid-back surfing towns in Canada. At Cox Bay, Chesterman Beach and the popular Long Beach in the Pacific Rim National Park, there are sandy beaches with year-round surfing spots. Accordingly, many calm, open, relaxed free spirits are living there.
The region is characterized by wild natural landscapes with lakes, bays and rainforests. Tofino's beaches and ancient rainforest attract not only surfers, but also nature lovers, campers, whale watchers, fishermen and anyone who simply wants to be close to nature. Just like us.
However, we also have to say that we traveled to Tofino in the 'off-season', which means that it was less crowded than in the summer months, when its full with tourists.

What is very special about Tofino & Ucluelet is that there are only local businesses. Large stores and franchises are banned there to support the creativity and entrepreneurial endeavors of its locals. New businesses must open in November and if they survive the hard and slow winter season, they are rewarded with booming summers with lots of tourism. So you know that you are always supporting local & “real” people with your purchase.

We spent our time walking by the ocean, hiking through the rainforest, exploring Tofino & Ucluelet, having coffee and dinner at the most relaxed campground in a long time, an aperitif in our hands with the view of the waves and ocean sounds in our ears; accompanied by the ease of this place.

The area around Tofino is beautiful. It is a place to slow down. The epitome of a dreamy, relaxed lifestyle where things seem to run on a different, slower clock.
But it is also a place of paradox - a place both to unplug and recharge, a place of both relaxtiation and adventure. The ancient landscapes are just as much home to youthful imagination as they are to a treasured history. Czytaj więcej
