..wir befinden uns noch immer im schönen Tofino und nehmen euch heute mit auf die Reise durch den Regenwald. Ja, es gibt Regenwälder in Kanada! ..nur halt anders als in den Tropen.
Dieser Regenwald ist der größte noch intakte gemäßigte Regenwald der Welt. Die gemäßigten Regenwälder des Pazifiks sind reich an biologischer Vielfalt und erstrecken sich über einen schmalen, weitgehend unzugänglichen 74 000 km langen Küstenstreifen Kanadas. Es ist das einzige gemäßigte Regenwald-Ökosystem in Nordamerika und eines von nur 7 weltweit. Fast 25 % des weltweiten Bestandes an gemäßigtem Regenwald befindet sich in British Columbia.
Regenwälder - gemäßigte und tropische zusammen - bedecken nur 10 % der Erdoberfläche, liefern aber als „Lungen der Welt“ ein Drittel des Sauerstoffs. Umso wichtiger diese zu vor weiterer Abholzung zu schützen, wertzuschätzen und pfleglich zu behandeln!

Unweit von Tofino, allerdings nur mit einem Wassertaxi zu erreichen, wartet eine Insel voll mit riesigen altgewachsenen Zedern und Douglasien; ein atemberaubenden Regenwald. Wir haben dort Stunden verbracht, erst entlang eines befestigten Weg und danach, etwas abenteuerlicher, einfach quer ein (erlaubterweise). Komplett alleine, ohne vorgegebene Route, durch Matsch und Wasser, über Moos und Hügel, unter, über und zwischen Bäumen hindurch, teilweise vor Jahren umgestürzt und sich langsam zersetzend. Suchend und findend nach wirklichen alten Bäumen mit unglaublichem Umfang und Höhe. Sich langsam und vorsichtig durchschlingelnd durch das Farn. Überwältigt von den satten Farben. Staunend, mal wieder, was die Natur alles erschaffen hat.
Für uns war dies einer der beeindruckendsten Tage, die wir bis jetzt erleben durften 🫶

...we are still in beautiful Tofino and today we are taking you on a journey through the rainforest. Yes, there are rainforests in Canada! ..just different than in the tropics.
This rainforest is the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world. The temperate rainforests of the Pacific are rich in biodiversity and stretch across a narrow, largely inaccessible 74,000 km of Canada's coastline. It is the only temperate rainforest ecosystem in North America and one of only 7 in the world. Almost 25% of the world's temperate rainforest is located in British Columbia.
Rainforests - temperate and tropical combined - cover only 10 % of the earth's surface, but as the “lungs of the world” they provide a third of the world's oxygen. This makes it all the more important to protect them from further logging, to value them and to treat them with care!

Not far from Tofino, but only accessible by water texi, is an island full of huge old-growth cedars and douglas firs; a breathtaking rainforest. We spent hours there, first along a paved path and then, somewhat more adventurously, simply off the beaten track (legally). Without a predetermined route, through mud and water, over moss and hills, under, over and between trees, some of which had fallen over years ago and were slowly decomposing. Searching for and finding real old trees with incredible girth and height. Walking slowly and carefully through the ferns. Overwhelmed by the rich colors. Amazed, once again, at what nature has created.
For us, this was one of the most impressive days we have ever experienced 🫶
