  • Day 3: Road trip to Yamoussoukro

    31. tammikuuta, Norsunluurannikko ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Left the hotel at 6:21am for the bus park. As I got there I saw a bus leaving probably an earlier Yamoussoukro bus.

The next bus was an express VIP bus leaving at 7:30 so I paid for that (XOF 8,000 as against 5,000 for the regular bus). There was an issue with my hand luggage as they kept insisting i have to out it in the cargo hold. After much talk they allowed me take it onboard but kept in front beside the driver by the hostess.

The trip took about 4hrs as we got to Yamoussoukro at 11:30. A Yango taxi took us to the hotel I had booked weeks back only to be told that the hotel stopped working with Hotels.Com over a year ago. So I had to reach out to hotels.com to inform them and request for a cancellation which took some time before heading back into town to look for another hotel.

  • Day 4: Yamoussoukro sightseeing

    1. helmikuuta, Norsunluurannikko ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Started the day off with a visit to the famous crocodile lake. Had a refreshing coconut drink before taking a taxi to the largest catholic cathedral in the world, The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro. Sunday mass was ongoing so I joined them for a one and a half hour spiritually lifting mass. Following the mass i took time to go round the massive cathedral and admiring the breathtaking architectural masterpiece which was built by the first president of Cote d'ivoire for hundreds of millions of dollarsLue lisää

  • Dinner by the pool

    1. helmikuuta, Norsunluurannikko ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

Returning from church and a heavy lunch at Eden, I slept off for a few hours before going down to the pool sode to order dinner which took over an hour to be prepared. Dinner was a delicious Jollof rice e with grilled chicken cooked the naija way. After dinner I spent some time in the reception to upload all the pictures and videos snapped & recorded on my phone onto my private server as the phone was running out of space and the internet signal in the room was weak and unstable. It took over 2hrs to upload all the mediaLue lisää

  • Day 5: Leaving Yamoussoukro

    2. helmikuuta, Norsunluurannikko ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

There was a taxi strike in Yamoussoukro today. Getting a taxi or Yango to take me to the bus terminal was a major challenge, eventually had one called for me. Got to the bus station shortly before 9am and was able to join the next bus which left in 10mins after my arrival.

We departed the station at approx 9:07. The bus used on this trip was a smaller 19 seater.

The dual carriage express road from Yamoussoukro to Abidjan looked like the Lagos - Ibadan express. The two sides are separated by an empty space.

Arrived the bus terminal in Abidjan at 12:20

  • Lunch @ Chez Tantie Alice

    2. helmikuuta, Norsunluurannikko ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Took a taxi from the bus stop to a local restaurant at Marcory called Chez Tantie Alice. Lunch time was used to while away the time as the Airbnb I booked wouldn't be ready till 2pm.

I left the restaurant shortly before 2pm. Drive to the apartment located in the Plateau region took 20mins. The caretaker was around to check me in. The apartment looked smaller than it was on the internet but features matched exactly.

From the apartment window I had a great view of the bridge and part of the port with ships.

Later in the evening I walked over to Super U to buy snacks and saw that they also sold precooked meals which I bought for my dinner

  • Day 6: Around the neighborhood

    3. helmikuuta, Norsunluurannikko ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

I needed to change some money so I Googled the nearest Money Exchange which was a 15min walk from the apartment, lol and behold the place was now a construction site, so I googled for another one close by and was directed to a building 7mins away. The money exchange firm was located on the 2nd floor, through twisting corridors and seedy looking staircases. I almost turned back but mustered the courage to complete.

The clerk too so long to make the transaction kept punching and repunching the computer keyboard until I got pissed and asked her what the delay was all about, she had also collected my passport and passed it to someone else who also delayed returning it. Eventually my passport was returned and the CFA given to me and I made a hasty retreat from the building.

On the ground floor was a restaurant. I ordered Rice, Peanut sauce and fried plantain unknown to me these were 2 separate meals but I managed to finish them ending up with a bloated stomach. The food was very cheap.

Leaving the restaurant I headed off to Woodin, a Ghanian couture, famous for making dresses using Ankara fabrics. They used to be in Lagos in the early 2010s but not any more. Sadly I couldn't find any shirt I liked, so I returned to the apartment.

At 6pm went to Super U to buy their precooked meal for dinner.

  • Boat taxi to nowhere

    5. helmikuuta, Norsunluurannikko ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

From the bank I walked down to the boat jetty by following the lagoon. Told the non English speaking attendant that I wanted a ticket to Cocody. He sold one to me for XOF 150. No boat in sight, I hope I don't have to wait long.

As I was recording the arriving boat the captain said I shouldn't and one of the workers who had seen me videoing before and never said anything found his voice. I just smiled and him and told him I don't under stand french so he switched to cut and join English asking me to delete the recordings. I just continued smiling at him and telling him I am a tourist and I make recordings every where I have been to while refusing to delete my clips. Eventually I wore him out and he allowed me to board the boat.

The boat took me on a 1hr circle to the different stops and brought me back to Plateau instead of Cocody which was my destination. So I got down and took a Yango. It was an hour well spent though as I got a good look of the lagoon and structures on its shores

  • La Placali Aboure

    5. helmikuuta, Norsunluurannikko ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

After exiting from the boat, I took a Yango to a restaurant called La Placali Aboure. I requested for Foufou and they told me it was finished so I got someone to interpret to them and the person said they had Placali which is foufou made from Cassava. That is the foufou we know back home. Apparently the foufou here is the yellowish one made from a mixture of ripe plantain and cassava. The placali came with a soup made from okro with assorted meat. It was really nice and tasty.

While I was there some young guys came to talk to me Apparently they are content creators and wanted to interview me about the food and restaurant so I granted them their wish.

I ate the sandwich which I bought at Super U yesterday along with bread and left o er chicken stew for breakfast before hailing a Yango to take me to the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny  at Cocody. The university is quite large with a lot of departments, with beautiful structures and forestry area. It was founded in 1959.

The Yango drove me round the campus before heading off to Abidjan Mall

    6. helmikuuta, Norsunluurannikko ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Abidjan mall is a medium size mall similar to the numerous malls we have back in Nigeria. It has two upper floors with stores selling clothes, household items, electronics, beauty products and restaurants.

It didn't take long to walk round the mall after which I settled down in the food court to have a burger with Orange juice while deciding where else to visit.

  • Day +1: Journey home begins

    8. helmikuuta, Norsunluurannikko ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

I woke up at 4:50am shortly before the alarm I had set the previous evening rang and quickly dashed to the bathroom to get ready. Had 1 piece of banana, wasn't able to eat the bread and left over chicken stew in the fridge nor drink the left over orange juice as it was too early to eat.

By 5:30am I was ready to leave my lovely Airbnb apartment. I hailed a Yango and went downstairs to drop the apartment key with the building security as advised by my host.

Yango picked me up shortly before 6am and by 6:15am I was at the airport. Check in was smooth and fast as most passengers were yet to arrive.
