Before leaving we go for a drive into the centre of Elliston to check it out. Very nice township, neat and clean with good shops - would be a nice spot to stay, just not on our radar this trip. Coffin Bay here we come.Læs mere

  • Coffin Bay Caravan Park

    12.–15. feb., Australien ⋅ 🌬 39 °C

Roger's booked us for 3 nights, so we arrive and check in. Collect our paperwork and park map - we're on drive through site 97.
We get settled and have some lunch - meat and salad sandwich for Roger, toasted sandwich for me - pickles, ham, tomato and cheese.
Now ready to go for a cruise about town for a look.
We get back around 2.30pm. I think for a tick I'm going to make some biscuits as the camp kitchen here has a oven - but Rog informs me it's being used for someone's roast - oh well try another time (shouldn't be so hot?). We relax at camp, Roger has booked us for an Oyster Farm Tour by boat on Friday - so I research what that intales - looks good and includes a dozen oysters each in the 3 hours.
I also do some research on ordering some flowers for Thelma Moss's 100th birthday this month. Write in a card too - ready to post.
Tea tonight is BBQ steak, airfryer chips and salad. Don't require anything else except a cuppa - I've enjoyed a bottle of bubbles with Roger earlier. Roger goes and has his shower while I do the dishes and tidy up. I'm now writing this up before bed.
13/02/25 Thursday. Birds wake us up around 7am - not sure what type, just lots of chirping going on that's for sure! We get up and have a leisurely breakfast together. No definite plans for the day so I'm happy to get organised to go do the Oyster Walk. Roger happy to drive me to the starting point 9.30am, and then he's just going to enjoy his morning 'poking about'.
I get back just after 12 noon, Roger's at camp so we have our lunch. Sandwich for Roger, open toasties for me. I have a shower in our caravan as the power is off at the caravan park today - scheduled 8am to 3pm. We decide to go for a drive to a nearby Pig Farm - we get back around 3.30pm and the power is back on. I go for a short walk to purchase some fresh baked sourdough - made by a local with a 'backyard business'. His Bakery is in a shed and he bakes 3 times a week - today's opening times 4pm to 6pm. I arrive just after 4pm and there is a steady stream of customers pulling up to go in and get some sourdough loaves. I buy 1 $10. Take it back to our caravan, it's still warm, so Roger and I have some sliced with dip for our afternoon drink nibbles. We go for a stroll together around the caravan park - fun to check out other campers set ups. Tea tonight is Chicken Kievs cooked in our airfryer with airfryer potato chips and served with mixed boiled vegetables. We have apple pies (heated in the airfryer) for dessert. Roger goes for his shower, I do the dishes. Now relaxing until bedtime.
14/02/25 Friday Happy Valentines Day. Roger and I are awake around 7am - thanks again to the chirping birds. We get up and have our usual breakfasts (porridge for me, 5 weetbix followed by toast, 1 vegemite, 1 honey for Rog and our cuppas). We tidy up and get organised for our morning tour we're booked for. Told to bring standard gear (water, hat, sunnies etc) and bathers if we want to swim or socks if we want to pull on supplied waders. Too cool for swimming for me this morning! We can walk from here to get to our tour take off point. We head off at 9am. Tour from 9.30am to 1pm. We get back to our caravan just after 1pm. We still feel like lunch - so we have toasted sandwiches - mine actually open toasties using a couple of slices of sourdough. Relax for a while before we both go for a walk to the supermarket. Return to unload our groceries, then walk to HQ (Cafe and Oyster Tours) for me to sample local gins.
Once we get back from this, we relax at camp - we're both reeling from the news that friends Caroline and Ivan Mills have split up. We attended their wedding (feels like a couple of years ago - but know it's a lot longer ago than that) - such a shame, they appeared so great together. I make contact with Caroline via text - she assures me it's mutual and they're both still friends. Caroline now living in Hamilton in the house she has there. I'm hoping Rog will check on Ivan. Tea tonight we have pizzas that Roger has made up - very tasty, salami, olives etc. I decide to take up the use of the camp kitchen oven and bake up some yoyo biscuits. Roger has his shower, and we both do dishes and tidy up. Relax until bedtime - I'm writing this up, then snooze time.
15/02/25 Saturday. I'm in no hurry to get up this morning, Roger is up just after 7.30am, but I have a lie in until closer to 8am. We have a leisurely breakfast, then I go and have a shower. Return and help tidy up and get ready to leave here. We head off around 9.30am.

Drive to this lookout after having had a walk about at the foreshore where the Jetty is. We also went and got some grocery items from the IGA - yoghurt and wine!
This lookout gives a beaut view of the foreshore of Coffin Bay. I've also discovered there is a trail here called The Oyster Walk - approximately 10km. Fingers crossed I get the chance to do that tomorrow when it's not so hot.
We've had a good drive around so we're ready to go back to our camp.

  • Oyster Walk Trail Coffin Bay

    13. februar, Australien ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

Roger drives me to the start point and drops me off. Happy to be doing this walk today - much cooler day. In fact as I start off, it's threatening rain and quite blustery winds, but half an hour into the walk this all calms down and becomes a lovely mild morning. Really enjoy walking near the coast line - water views are beautiful. Then the last section of the walk (the way I've done it) has the inland uphill part that takes me to the lookout again - then the downhill homeward bound to the caravan park. Strava tells me I walked almost 13kms and taken approx 2 and a half hours to do it. That'll do nicely - my feet are complaining, out of practise! Enjoyed it immensely - so much so, while doing it, I rang Gabe Baudinette to see if she has room in her Serra Terror team for me to return this year! Yay, there is, so I will consult with Roger and make my plans to be back for June long weekend event.Læs mere

  • Pig Farm Coffin Bay

    13. februar, Australien ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

At our caravan park, there are advertising boards on display - showing what is happening and available around and in Coffin Bay. There's one board inviting people out to a Pig Farm to enjoy a cuppa and treats in their Cafe and to purchase pork products direct from the farm. Well Roger being very fond of pork on his fork, decided we should go for a drive to this place this afternoon - so we did. I guess it's about 12km out of Coffin Bay - mainly on gravel back roads, so good chance to take in the dry countryside.
We find the driveway thanks to good signage and drive in to find buildings that are a bit run down and yard maintenance lacking. Now I'm a farm girl at heart so I didn't let this put us off. We park and go enter the Cafe area - no one in sight. Everything is open and accessible, we even wander into the next section of the building which appears to be a second hand shop full of old 'stuff'. We go back into the Cafe shop area and check out the pork for sale in a display fridge - nice pork chops and bacon. Still no one around....after waiting another 5 minutes or so - we felt we had better leave.
On our return drive, just as we were driving into Coffin Bay township we passed a small delivery type ute (it was leaving town) that had the Pig Farm logo on it. Oh well, missed our business today.

  • Experience Coffin Bay Tour

    14. februar, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We arrive, by walking the short distance from our caravan park, in plenty of time for our 9.30am boat departure. We are greeted by our hosts, boat skipper and tour guide Scott, and deckhand and 'gun' oyster shucker Libby. We wait for all passengers to arrive - it is a full tour. We are comfortably seated in an enclosed area with tables - good viewing all the way around us inside the boat.
Roger and I are seated opposite a couple, Otto and Sandra, who are staying in Port Lincoln at present, and are doing a day trip here to incorporate this tour. They have put their English Staffy, Bob, into doggy daycare (cost $35) while they are doing this. Enjoy nice chatting with them - they have 4 young grandchildren (2 in Brisbane, 2 in Mackay).
Have a great tour, fun to get out in the water - I chose the waders option, Rog just went for the swim option - for our wander in amongst the oyster racks. We then get to listen to Scott explain about current (and past) oyster practices - leading to todays sustainable farming. So much more involved than just waiting for them to grow! It takes 18 to 24 months to grow oysters to a size to be ready to be consumed. The premium oysters are 'fattened' to 3 years of age. After the talk, we all get a dozen fresh oysters each (shucked by Libby while the talk was happening) - served with fresh lemon and a couple of other sauce condiments. I tried them all, but definitely happy to have most natural - delicious! Now on our boat ride back to Coffin Bay Jetty we check out some places to see seals laying about resting on the rocks. Lovely tour.

  • HQ Coffin Bay

    14. februar, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

After having gone for a walk to the IGA supermarket earlier, to get some grocery items. While there and looking in their Cellabrations liquor department I came across the Coffin Bay gins - three of them. On asking how best I could get to taste them - I'm told they don't have a call in distillery set up, my best way to try them is to go to the HQ and do a 'Gin Flight' paddle. So here I am! Roger has come over with me - he says he feels like a coffee. Apparently it pays to book to come here, but they manage to accommodate us with a lovely table outside (as long as we're gone by 5.30pm for its next reservation). We've already ordered our selection - a whopping $35 for my gin paddle - to try the 3 local gins and $5 for Roger's cappuccino. Most people come here for the fresh oysters - $30 per dozen, luckily we've had our fill of amazing oysters from this morning. Typical me, I like all the gins - though one stands out. I ask and find out I can't purchase it here - I'll have to return to the supermarket. After we leave, I do. Roger goes back to our van to relax. I come back from the Cellabrations store with 1 bottle of gin and 2 bottles of bubbles - and a foldable cooler bag 'thrown in' for my purchases!Læs mere

  • Port Lincoln Tourist Park

    15.–18. feb., Australien ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

We arrive in Port Lincoln and drive straight to here - this is the caravan park that Otto and Sandra, couple we met yesterday on a tour, are staying at and recommended. As the weather is so much cooler, we know we'll manage on an unpowered site - keeps the price reasonable - cost $27 per night. We have 3 areas in the park that are allocated for unpowered camping that we are welcome to make our own camp selection from. So we drive about the park - almost immediately see Otto and Sandra, they have a prime (powered) camping spot, we say a quick hello and continue with our camp site finding. We decide on the unpowered area (smallest) that is in the middle of the park closest to the amenities. Roger does a great job of parking our van with best wind protection for our awning and getting water views from our outside sitting area under the awning. We settle in - mat and awning with wall put to use - next with ute unhitched, we go for a drive to do some van and ute maintenance shopping, have lunch, look about Port Lincoln a bit and go to Woolworths to do a restock grocery shopping.
We return about 2pm. Unpack our groceries and time to relax about camp. We get a whatsapp call from Tegan - her and Lev are trying to repair their rocking chair again - lovely to have a chat. Roger and I continue to relax about our camp, Roger gets food prepped for the lamb leg roast he's cooking today. We are listening to a podcast cast 'Bronwyn' - it is incredible listening, just seems so obvious what has happened....but what a tangled mess it's become! When I've had enough of the podcast for today, I go for a stroll - Roger staying at camp watching his roast cooking - to see if Otto and Sandra are at their camp to have a catch up with. They are - and they are so welcoming and friendly I have a lovely 'visit' with them. They're giving me wine to try (a beaut cask sauv blanc) and Otto gives me a demo of the oyster shucking method we were shown yesterday - he's got it perfected! I hope I've got Otto's demo on video. Roger has to come to get me for tea - though truthfully I was just about to get back. The roast tea is fantastic - very nicely cooked lamb with roast and boiled vegetables and mushroom gravy. We follow this with banana and yoghurt fior dessert. Roger has his shower, I do the dishes - now relaxing until bedtime.
16/02/25 Sunday We're woken by Roger's phone alarm at 6.15am. We get up as we need to be at the wharf around 7.30am for our tour today. We get dressed into our bathers that are suitable to be worn under wetsuits, and put warm comfy clothing over the top. We have our breakfasts and pack what we are required to take and leave here just after 7.30am.
We get back from our Swim with Sealions tour at around 1pm. We both go and have showers to freshen up after our swim. Then I get 2 loads of washing happening - it will dry well with the way the day has turned out - sunny with some breeze. We still feel like a bit of lunch - even though we were fed nicely on the tour - so we have a cheese and vegemite sandwich each. Once we've got the washing hung out to dry we relax at camp for a while, before going for a walk.
On return from our walk, I call by Otto's camp to check how his day has been - all good he tells me, relaxing and packing up ready to leave in the morning. His wife Sandra is out on an all day tour (got up 5.30am) - Shark diving in a cage - he doesn't expect her back before 8pm.
Roger and I relax at camp - continuing listening to the 'Bronwyn' podcast. We get a phone call from Robert - nice catch up and he fills us in on what mail we have been getting.
Tea tonight is left over roast meat, Roger serves it with roast and boiled vegetables, and mushroom gravy. We follow this with golden syrup dumplings cooked in our Baby Q. Roger does the dishes while I get our budget books up to date. We receive a call via Barb to chat with Megan and Robbie and other beaut crew - they're celebrating another successful Lake Charlegrark MM weekend, so fun to hear from them. We miss this weekend because of these lovely people - all going to plan we'll be back next year. After this call, we resume listening to more of the pod cast. Roger's had enough of the podcast so his bedtime, I'm writing this up, then I'll follow suit.
17/02/25 Monday We have a nice sleep in, I get up at 7.45am wanting to go for a run. Roger lays in abit longer - unfortunately his neck and back are 'playing up'. I head off for my run just after 8am - and return 9.20am and meet up for a wander with Roger as he's walking out on the Jetty here at the park. Return to the caravan for my breakfast. No plans for the day so just relax and catch up on odds and sods. Find out that Levi and Dova's wedding is postponed until next year - same date and month so it's changed to 15/05/2026. Roger also let's me know that Robert has messaged that he'll be going out working for himself after he returns from Canada. Time for a change for him. Lunch today is meat and salad sandwich for Roger, I finish off the cold roast lamb and then have a couple of open toasties with avocado, salami, tomato and cheese.
Roger has made an appointment for a massage this afternoon so we go for a drive about Port Lincoln to check out caravan parts and servicing places looking for parts Roger wants to replace. We find one place that may have a air vent cover - so we come back to the caravan to get our one that needs replacing to compare. I decide to stay at the caravan for a rest and read - while Roger drives off to resume his parts search and go for his massage. When Roger gets back - he's unsure whether the massage has made a difference - hoping the next few days it will help it improve. He decides to go for a swim in the parks pool - I'm tempted to go too, but remain at the van, sorting bookings I'd made for the wedding - change them to the new date. When Roger comes back from his swim (best pool so far he tells me), we rest and listen to more of the Bronwyn pod cast - finish series 1.
Tea tonight Roger cooks up marinated chook fillets we have with panfried and boiled vegetables. Yoghurt and bananas for dessert. Roger showers, and I get a lovely phonecall from Barb with Adrian - they're camping in their new caravan in Naracoorte. Looks a great set up from videos and photos Barb sent me earlier today. Next time to for me to do the dishes, and now writing this up before going to bed.
18/02/25 Tuesday My alarm goes off at 5.30am and I quickly get out of bed (before I change my mind lol) and Roger follows as well. We discussed if we got up early enough this morning - we could drive to Lincoln NP (40 Min drive) and do a scenic walk (approx 5.6km) and still get back here in time to leave by 10am. We have a quick breakfast - muesli and prunes for me, Rog's usual and get ready to go for a hike - we leave just after 6am. We get back to our caravan 9.10am. Time for me to go and have a shower and for Roger to move our van to get water for our storage tanks. We leave this park just before 10am. This was a beaut park to stay at - great amenities and so lovely right beside the water.

  • Calypso Star Charters Swim with sealions

    16. februar, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Arrive at the start point in good time - they like people to arrive well before the 8am start. There are other participants arriving as well. We get to start chatting with others doing this tour - we're all looking forward to this tour, just wondering how the cooler weather and winds will affect our outing.
We all get aboard the boat just before 8am. The skipper, Andrew introduces himself and his crew, Bree, Bron and Chloe and explains how the tour will run. It is obviously a well organised set up. It will take us about an hour and half of boating to get us to our 1st option for the swim - in this time we'll be served (help ourselves to smorgasbord food) breakfast and we'll be kitted up in our wetsuits. The breakfast is great, ham and cheese toasted muffins and a platter of cut up fresh fruit. Getting into the provided wetsuits was accomplished with quite a few laughs - not the easiest things to get into for some of us! We arrive at the 1st option Grindor Island - decision is made that it's too shallow (tide) and choppy waters, so we go another 10 minutes to the 2nd option Hopkins Island - where we do our swim. We have 1 hour allowance to be in the water with the sealions - welcome to come back on board before that, or ride about in the tender boat with crew. I manage to stay out for around 45 minutes before returning to the boat, Roger isn't far behind me. Fantastic experience - those sealions are amazing and certainly happy to hang around and put on a good show (not trained, just inquisitive). We get out of the wetsuits and dry off - offer of hot showers but we're happy to just get dressed into our clothes again - we'll shower when we get back. Now we enjoy the hour and a half trip back, chatting happily and enjoying a couple of drinks. I'm chatting with a lady who turns out to be Andrea as well - she has kindly taken photos of Rog and I - and will forward them to us along with some photos and videos she has taken on today's tour. Had a great time with this tour.

Very nice going along the coast still - but further along, once I have to move away from the water - I lose the trail and end up running along some streets. When my 35 minutes timer let's me know it's time to go back - I just retrace my course until I'm back on track. Nice morning for this - mild.

Park in one of the main streets of Tumby Bay. Ready to go for a walk to look around. We realise we're parked near an Op Shop and it's open. Good opportunity for me to offload some denim shorts I've replaced (from another Op Shop $5) and have a look see, we discover this shop has an extensive stock of audio books in CD form. Roger has a good time selecting a couple of titles. We now keep wandering and end up at the Bakery - other travellers have mentioned this one as a good one - for a morning smoko break. Roger gets his cappuccino with a Bee Sting and I get a Spiced chai with a Kitchener Bun - I haven't had one of these for years (at least 30 I'd say if not more). It was sooo good. After we've had our morning tea break we continue wandering about the place. Enjoying a lot of the street art and going out on the town's Jetty. Once we've had a look in the main street areas we go back to our ute and van and drive further about Tumby Bay. A lovely neat coastal town. We call in and check out the RV campground on the outskirts of town - it's OK but it's inland, we feel we can find better further along the way we're wanting to head. So off we go.Læs mere

This is at Cowleys Beach, between Tumby Bay and Port Neill along the coast. This camping spot has an honesty box, which uses our chosen fee to camp here as donation for RFDS. We happily put in $10 ($5 each effectively). There is no mobile service/coverage here so I know we'll have a beaut relax - enjoying our coastal view. Very happy with our choice of camp today - it's a bit windy but so lovely watching the water and taking in the scenery. We have our lunch, cheese and vegemite sandwiches, then go for a walk along the beach. We go up on higher ground and follow the coast - very rugged rocks, great views. Back at camp I lie on our bed and finish a book I'm reading, Roger continues to poke around outside. Once I finish my book we go for another walk trying to find old Homestead remains and a child's grave - but we have no success with this. At camp, we meet our closest neighbouring campers, Leonie and ???(I've forgotten) and their rottweiler dog Kuna (as in Arkuna-ma-tutta) as they go for a walk past us - stop and chat for a while, lovely fellow Victorians (Melb) on 5 weeks holiday. Tea tonight we have mince tacos - too full to worry about dessert. Roger has his shower and then washes the dishes. I finish off deleting junk emails on my mobile and dry the dishes and tidy up. We have a cuppa and now relaxing - I'll find a new book to start reading shortly, and join Rog reading before bedtime.
19/02/25 Wednesday We enjoy a lie in - nothing planned except to get to our next camping spot which isn't far away. So I stay in bed reading until after 8am, Roger got up around 7.45am to have his breakfast. I get up and have my breakfast too, then we go for a walk together along Cowleys Beach. Once we return I have a shower, then help get ready to leave here. We drive away just after 10am.

So we pull up just off the main street area of Cowell so we can have some lunch. We have this in our caravan - left over taco mince in a sandwich for Roger, and leftover taco mince on a couple of open toasties for me. This gives Roger the chance to look on Wiki Camps and find that there is a RV Campground just on the outskirts of Cowell we can camp out, as we're not looking for power while we've got cooler weather. Roger goes and fills up the caravan tanks then we find the dump point so our caravan 'housekeeping' is up to date. We decide to go to the RV campground. Once we're settled there we come back into Cowell (ute unhitched) and park so we can walk about the place. Enjoy a stroll up and down the main street - we get milk from the IGA that Roger goes and puts in the Engel in the ute - before wandering out to the marina and Jetty area. Roger gets us parked and unhitched in no time. We're not putting out our mat or awning so quick all round. We head off for a drive to look around. We return about 5.00pm. I get straight onto using my mobile to research and order some flowers to be delivered for 'Auntie' Thelma Moss. It's her 100th birthday this coming Sunday. Roger prepares and cooks his sausage surprise in the caravan - on the stove top. So yummy tea tonight. Followed by yoghurt and banana.
