On our first day in Hilo we visited the Akaka Falls State Park, about 20 min by car from our Airbnb. It’s a nice little jungle park with a wonderful 135m high waterfall.

At late afternoon we drove from Hilo, sea level, to the top of the mountain Mauna Kea, about 4200m. On 2800m we had to make a quick stop to acclimate. After that we were able to made the drive to the top. It’s pretty cold up there, but only a few snow left. The view is stunning. As we were waiting for the sunset, a scientist from the France/Canadian Observatory asked us to check out the telescope. Amazing job these guys make up there and pretty cool to watch. And yeah, we came right on time for the sunset.Read more
