Akaka Falls & Mauna Kea

On our first day in Hilo we visited the Akaka Falls State Park, about 20 min by car from our Airbnb. It’s a nice little jungle park with a wonderful 135m high waterfall.

At late afternoon we drove from Hilo, sea level, to the top of the mountain Mauna Kea, about 4200m. On 2800m we had to make a quick stop to acclimate. After that we were able to made the drive to the top. It’s pretty cold up there, but only a few snow left. The view is stunning. As we were waiting for the sunset, a scientist from the France/Canadian Observatory asked us to check out the telescope. Amazing job these guys make up there and pretty cool to watch.
