• Napier to Wanganui/Whanganui via Taupo

    11. joulukuuta 2024, Uusi Seelanti ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Bit of a semi loop today. Headed out of Napier for Lake Taupo, then Mt Ruapehu and finally Wanganui or Whanganui, the signs can't make up their minds.
Saw a couple of people fishing in Lake Taupo. Not surprised as this is trout fishing Mecca. Had lunch in Tongariro of Tongariro River fame.
The off to Mount Ruapehu which is an active volcano with a ski field. Last eruption was 2006 but quiet today. Took the Gondola up, a bit expensive but that's New Zealand for you. Got some pictures of Mt New Zealand: Mount Ngauruhoe aka Mount Doom in the background.
Still some snow around. Angela didn't want a snowball fight so withdrew to the Cafe.
Back down after a few hours and the off to the 'W' place. The landscape is very rugged with the creeks and rivers carving deep cuts into the soft rock which seems to be volcanic ash. Lots of landslips along the winding road. You could not fish anywhere in here without a bloody long ladder.
