    1. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

After a long flight and lengthy delays, we finally got to Johannesburg. What felt like an age at baggage collection, we got a shuttle to the hotel where the objective was to get the kids to bed as fast as possible.
We broke up our sleep with a 2am play time before continuing at 4am.
Thankfully, an amazing buffet Brekky made it up with a full spread to get us through the day. The baked beans, chilli con-carne and omelettes were amazing.

We arrived at our private sanctuary after our hour long flight from Johannesburg. As with all small airports and planes, we weren’t sure if our prams were going to make it through, or if our cot would arrive following the instructions to just ‘leave it in the pile’.
Driving into our reserve, we saw giraffes, baboons, waterbucks, and ‘Zazu’. We were treated to a delicious lunch from our private chef at the reserve, watching a family of elephants patrol around the perimeter of our huts and dining area.
That evening, we took off on our first Safari, getting up close and personal to Cape buffalo, lions, hippos, a rare leopard and impala.
After a massive day, the kids could barely put spoon to mouth, so we crashed out for the night.

Whilst Eden and John got up early for a quick 9 holes of golf, Leah and Cyndy took it a little slower with some breakfast, drinks, and a chilly dip in the pool.
Lunch time saw us back at the reserve with some beers, wines, cocktails, and cokes, just enjoying the afternoon and some burgers.
That afternoon, Confidence (the prophetess) predicted that we would see a Rhino in our safari as John (the guide) took us off. Within 10 minutes, we were within metres of a white rhino wandering through the brush. The safari would prove to be another winner, with two leopards, honey badgers, zebras, giraffes, elephants and a civet cat (think the cat poo coffee beans). Some G&Ts were had on the plateau overlooking the setting sun and valley below before making our way back to a roast pork dinner.

    3. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

It was an early start to leave our reserve at 5:45am to get to Kruger National Park early. The day was supposed to reach 40°, so getting out early to see the animals was paramount. We packed some breakfast and our guide John took us to the park.
We learnt much about the history of the place and had some incredible encounters with elephants, zebras and giraffes standing within just a few metres of the van.
The list of animals seen increased rapidly with elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, warthogs, wildebeest, buffalo, zebras, impala, crocodiles, gazelles, ostriches, birds and plants and everything in between.
As the temperature crept upwards, we took lunch at an awesome steak restaurant (which felt a little unusual having steaks right in front of all the wild animals).
Heading back to our accomodation we unwound over dinner which was a fireside BBQ with some champagne bubbles. We said a farewell to some of the other visitors at our reserve before ticking in for the night.

Another early rise to get a morning safari in for us on our last day. The weather was changed again, with a cold and windy day following our 40° day before.
This safari was one to remember - with hyenas, a running rhino, and a pride of lions. Whilst viewing a ‘kill’ from the night before, we saw a pride of lions 300m ahead of us. John (guide) raced ahead to put is right in the middle of them as they walked along and lied down for a nap. As if being within 3m of them wasn’t crazy enough, he tried to provoke the lions to stand so other less fortunate tours could see them too. Lennox also loved showing the lions his own toy lion whilst roaring at them!
Satisfied with our safaris and Rory and Lennox now loving the trips, we headed back for our cooked breakfasts before heading to the flight to Cape Town.
We finally met Emily and Amos at the airport, and were stoked to see how well they were doing. A few hugs, tears, and custom routes to avoid townships later, we headed to our beachside lodgings and had some pizza before catching up on some sleep.

    5. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Another early start saw the boys take to the golf course at Milnerton. It was an absolutely stunning course with pristine groomed fairways, well cut and consistent greens, and spectacular views out over the ocean and back towards Table Mountain. The morning had a pretty strong wind making it tricky, but the lovely course and coffee afterwards made you hardly notice it.
Back at the house, it was time to prepare some of the activities for the kids for Bible Camp, so we spent the rest of the morning putting activities together.
From there, it was off to our first mission work at Bible Camp with Emily and Amos. The kids were amazing - so full of life and love. A presentation about the water cycle, water in the Bible, and some water-saving tips went down well. It was then to activities with colouring in hessian bags that were made for the kids.
Back at the house we watched the sunset, put the kids to sleep, and headed out to dinner to catch up with some Sydney friends from the other side of the world.

    6. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

It was time for Bible Camp for the under-10s today, with some more activities, songs and dancing, arts and crafts and a few presentations. The children loved the opportunity to meet some of Emily’s relatives, Lennox made a few more friends, and Rory wanted to be held by all.
The weather was fine, and there was no wind, so we decided that afternoon we would go to Table Mountain and catch the cable car up. It was an amazing experience on the perfect day, looking down over all of Cape Town and seeing some of the creation around us. As usual, photos just couldn’t capture the grandeur and landscape of the ocean meeting the sky, the mountain backdrop and expanse of the city.
Afterwards, it was down to The Lawns for some dinner and drinks. Some hot honey and pepperoni pizzas and some burgers went down so well after a full day on the feet!

    7. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This morning was up early to get out to Hopefield! Some late night shopping the night before at Woolworths (which is actually a high end department store here!) meant we had breakfast and lunch sorted for the kids.
It was a two hour drive to get to Hopefield by 9am for the memorial meeting at Henry and Liezl’s house, which Eden delivered. Lennox had a great time playing with all the toys in the backyard.
After the meeting, Michael and Leilandi gave us a tour of their work in building a Bible Camp for Bible Club. Henry showed us his hunting rifles, his biltong, his clubs, and wine collection as we tried some of his rooibos tea.
It was then off to the Canola Fields for an amazing basket hamper lunch. Champagne, cheese boards, meats, and a wide charcuterie boards. It was a beautiful afternoon made interesting by the midgies.
We finally got back to our apartment after a long drive home to find a power outage was happening, but fortunately there was lamps and hot water still for the kids baths.

  • Camps Bay

    8. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

A quieter day today to give the kids and family a bit of a chance to catch up on some sleep and cleaning. After a slow morning, we headed out to Truth Coffee Roasting - named Worlds Best Coffee Shop by the UK Telegraph. The place was pretty awesome, it had a great steampunk theme to all the cafe, decorations, uniforms, menu. After a bagel and a BLT we tried these coffees, and whilst they were really good, we still think Australia delivers the world’s best.
We tried to visit Bo-Kaap but it was quite busy, and as soon as we pulled up we had people at the window of the car, so we decided to leave it till another time. Heading back to the house, Emily and Amos swung by to cook up some big batches of soup for the Bible Club.
That afternoon, we headed out to Clifton beach with the aim to go to Camps Bay for dinner to watch the sunset. Lennox and Rory had a great time playing on the playground and in the rock pools, throwing rocks into the ocean, and getting sand all in their wet shoes.
Heading to dinner, we walked along the coast to some beautiful sunset views. Finding a cafe in Camps Bay - the dinner was amazing and so were the views as the sun went down. Lennox was excited to tell Amos about the big beautiful moon we saw on the way home.

  • Cape of Good Hope

    9. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Up and at ‘em a little later than we would have liked, but nonetheless we were on our way for the days adventures. Our first stop was to Boulders Beach where the African Penguin colony resided. We walked along the beach access for our close and intimate encounter with penguins whose funny walks made us laugh. Then it was over the board walk to see the wider colony in their breeding habitat.
Heading back into beautiful Simon’s Town, we stopped for some lunch at Hickory smoked meats where Lenny fell asleep behind Emily.
Then onwards to the Cape of Good Hope. We saw multiple ostriches on the way, and baboons on the road, but walking up the trail was an interesting endeavour in the blistering wind. Lennox loved travelling with uncle Amos but Rory didn’t appreciate being in the backpack.
The lookout was beautiful but the clouds started rolling in so we started to make our way across to Chapmans Peak Drive, going through Noordhoek Farm Village first.
Chapmans Peak was beautiful, with stunning views around the bay and carved into the cliffs and mountains itself. Photos couldn’t capture how large and grand the scenes were. Unfortunately we didn’t get the sunset we wanted, but it was still an epic end to the day. With the kids falling asleep in the car, we got some good old Maccas for dinner.

A drizzly and foggy morning meant we had the morning to catch up on some sleep and have a slower start to the day. With the kids left with the grandparents, we went out to Sea Point for a walk around. We grabbed a coffee at Bootleggers before going into the Mojo Markets for a quick bite before heading back.
That afternoon it was out to Bible Club to see the kids soccer team practice some of their drills, and see the Pink Dance Queens perform some of the dances they’ve been learning!
After Bible Club, it was back to Michael and Leilandis house for dinner where they treated us to a typical South African Braais with ribs, sausages, rump, wings and even some ostrich meat with Malva pudding for dessert! We stayed for their Wednesday night class before packing the kids up home for a sleep.

    11. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This morning we woke up to a cloudy and overcast day with fog and the occasional drop of rain. It was a slow start to the day, so we went out to Camps Bay for a walk up and down the beach, and stopped into Mantra Cafe for some breakfast and a coffee. Mantra was really nice with some great interior design, great food and a funky little homewares shop at the front that had Leah wanting to take home everything.
We went from there to explore Clifton Beaches, which would have been nicer if the weather wasn’t so overcast, but with 14° water temperature, we weren’t going for a swim anyways.
Back at the house for the kids to sleep, we then went to Bo-Kapp to see if we could visit the beautiful painted houses again. It was much busier this time, but this felt safer than last time.
From there we grabbed some snacks and drinks and headed up to Signal Hill to watch the sunset. It was a great afternoon with the weather clearing, warm sun, good company, and a stunning sunset. We watched till the sun went down before descending the mountain to grab some of the most amazing wood fire pizza we’ve had! Hot Honey and Salami, prosciutto basil and burrata, and Italian sausage too!
We went to bed feeling well satisfied with our stay in Cape Town with a great afternoon to top off the week before heading to Stellenbosch.

  • Stellenbosch

    12. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today it was time to check out of our amazing accomodation in Milnerton and head across to the wine capital of South Africa - Stellenbosch.
Fun facts: South Africa is the world’s 8th largest wine producer, sixth largest exporter, and over 80% of their wine is consumed domestically.
We arrived at our accomodation and were introduced to Steve who gave us a tour of the massive house.
Following that, the kids were peckish and so were the adults, so we headed out to Mont Marie winery and restaurant.
Mont Marie had a huge playground for the kids, a large drinks menu and mouth-watering menu. We ordered a couple of bottles of their Chardonnay to see us through the afternoon and spent the remainder of the day talking, sipping and enjoying our meals while watching Lenny play in the sandbox.
Afterwards, we ducked into the grocery store to pick up some snacks before having a quiet snack at the house before going down.

    13. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Our first day in Stellenbosch and we were out to make the most of it. We headed off to a Saturday market called Root44 for coffee and breakfast. It was an awesome little market with heaps of food and drink options, amazing outdoor dining, and a media section for watching the All Blacks vs Springboks.
From there, it was across to Stark-Condé for our first tasting. It was set amongst a mountain backdrop, with a tasting room in the middle of a pond. The wines were paired with chocolates to bring different combinations of flavours. The wines were lovely but the setting and scenery was the talk of the town.
We went home to put the kids down, and while they had a sleep, Eden went for a run while everyone lounged around the pool.
Then, it was off to Waterford Estate. This winery was absolutely stunning, set like a Tuscan homestead, it was a picturesque place with immaculate landscaping and gardens. Another wine tasting with chocolate pairings had us settled in, so we ordered a bottle of their Blanc de Blanc bubbles and settled in for a tipple.
Unfortunately this left it late to get to the shops for some dinner things, so we ended up at Bossa for some wings, ribs, pizzas and steaks to end our first full day in Stellenbosch.

  • Babylonstoren

    14. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

This morning we went out to the old Cape Dutch farmstead of Babylonstoren which was founded in 1692. The farm is massive and needed far more time than what we allocated to it. The buildings kept their heritage styles and were beautifully presented. The grounds were immaculate, and there was so much to see and do. The gardens were massive, and had all sorts of sections to them - water plants, succulents, rainforest, medicinal, spices, and so many more. There were restaurants, wine tasting, leather and steel works, a petting zoo, a bakery, a butcher, homewares and distillery, a mill, fruit and veg store, cafe, and so so much more - all of which were operating and all sourced from the working farm and local areas.
From there it was home for the kids to sleep while the boys headed out to Stellenbosch Golf Course to play a quick 9 holes. The course was beautiful, with fast greens and despite being pretty busy, we were able to play a nice easy round.
On the way home we got some ingredients and snacks for pesto chicken pasta for dinner, before having a memorial meeting and starting to pack up.

We were sad to leave Stellenbosch and all its beautiful wineries and vineyards. The Dutch buildings and scenic roads just made it such a delight, but it was onwards to Plattenberg Bay.
We had a long drive ahead of us, so after a quick fuel at the servo (and a longer conversation than expected with the attendant) we took off to Mossels Bay for our first stop.
Four hours in and we arrived at the lighthouse for some lunch. The scenes were beautiful, looking down over craggy rocks and even whales breaching on the horizon, but it wasn’t to be.. the kids had had enough, and Lennox put on a display of ‘wailing’.
As circumstance would have it, the restaurant was doing a bit of a revamp as well, so food options being limited - we headed back on the road with just some fast food to patch us over.
Before getting to Plettenberg, we stopped at a lookout to stretch our legs before whipping up a quick spag-bol for dinner.

  • Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary

    16. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

We had our first proper rainy day in South Africa. The wind and rain made golf in the morning a bit of a mission! Lots of standing water and ducks added some extra hazards, so it was eventful but still fun. Plettenberg was a beautiful course and we had it all to ourselves!
Leah tried to find a break in the weather to get some coffee but got rained in, so Eden went to pick her up for a fish and chip lunch.
After the kids had a long day sleep, we left to go to Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary. We learnt a lot not just about the animals that were there, but also about the requirements and regulations surrounding sanctuaries. There are strict controls over the breeding, distributing and caring for the animals. Many were on hormones and contraceptives to prevent breeding. Others were well fed to ensure they remained docile. What was particularly interesting was that many were ‘humanised’ but not allowed to be ‘domesticated’. They had an amazing variety of bengal and Siberian tigers, panthers, lions, cheetah, leopards, and many more!
That night, it was to The Lookout Deck which would have been fantastic in brighter weather, but nonetheless we were entertained by Emily and Amos tricking Lenny into eating some vegetables while Rory climbed under the tables.

  • Robberg Nature Reserve

    17. syyskuuta 2025, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

The weather broke and the sun was out today, so we made the most of it by heading out to Robberg for a hike around the island. It was a stunning bit of coastline with all sorts of terrain to hike. The 5km hike took us a little over two hours to complete, and took us past cliffs, dunes, beaches, and seal colonies as we explored the reserve. The trail itself was a challenge, with rocky climbs, narrow paths past cliffs, sand trails, and some serious climbs. The effort was almost as rewarding as some of the views and scenery.
From there, we put the kids to sleep at home while the rest of the family went to see the Raptors and have some lunch before we met up again at Monkeyland. Monkeyland was another conservatory that fostered all types of monkeys and rescues. The 12 hectare parcel of forest allowed the monkeys free rein over their space to climb and swing as they pleased. It was a little daunting at first to have them so close and familiar with you, but after settling in, you got to see how happy and playful they were. Lennox had no doubts or fears at all in getting up close to them!
Afterwards, it was to Enricos for dinner by the sea. Unfortunately the wind had the deck closed, but inside we had some of the best pasta, pizzas and wines we could get, as well as a surprising Springbok shot from Emily! Despite us all starving heading in, barely any could finish their meals from the large servings they gave. With the kids needing showers after their mini Coca Cola shower, we went back to crash for the night.

The morning started with our final round of Golf for the trip at the Gary Player designed Goose Valley golf course. It was definitely the most challenging of the courses we played on, but with immaculate fairways and greens and beautiful undulation through the course. Emily tagged along for the ride and enjoyed watching the round.
Leah took the kids to Bootleggers Cafe for some coffee and Brekky and met up later with Eden at Cafe 11 which did the best coffee of the trip so far, with an English muffin deal that was delish!
The kids went down for a sleep at lunch while Emily and Amos went to a Wolf Sanctuary and Eden and Leah went to the shops to get some snacks and drinks from our favourite Checkers.
Afterwards we went back to the Lookout Deck to have a nice early dinner and drinks and watch the sunset with coastal views.
That night it was back to start packing up our bags as it was time to leave our coastal retreat.

Today it was up early to get our drive on the way as we headed from Plettenberg Bay back to Oudtshoorn. We popped into our favourite cafe 11 on the way to get our coffee and muffin combo before making tracks. We had an Ostrich safari booked for 10am which we missed from the roadworks and traffic on the way.
Piling into the back of a tractor drawn carriage with a bucket of feed, we went through the enclosures. The ostriches were huge, with some reaching 2.7m in height. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable in all ostrich content! The large birds were slightly intimidating to feed, but we got the hang of it soon enough.
From there, it was to Spurs for a hearty lunch before we entered the Cango Caves. These were huge caverns that went over 5km deep into the mountains. Lennox was a little scared at first but warmed up to the experience quickly. The caverns were stunning and well lit and maintained with the only downside being our guide who leant too heavy on the race and weight jokes.. checking into our cottage for the night, we tuckered into some Mi Goreng for dinner before tucking in.

Leah and the family were up before the sun to get the best seats today to see the meerkats in their habitat. We watched the sunrise, drinking coffees and teas before getting broken off into two groups. The guides go out the night before to find where the meerkats spend the night so they know where to take us in the morning as they are nomadic animals. They are quite temperamental, so to get the views we did the meerkats must have been comfortable. Unfortunately the iPhone camera didn’t quite capture them.
Eden stayed back with Lenny and Rory as kids weren’t allowed on the experience.
Then, it was packing up the bags as we started our 5 hour drive back to Cape Town. We were staying at the Hotel Verde at the airport in Cape Town.
The drive was beautiful, with some absolutely fantastic scenery. Mountains and cliffs with wineries and vineyards, we drove through some iconic small towns that picturesque and some tunnels that could have been from Europe.
We arrived at the hotel, dropped off our bags and emptied the car before settling in. Room service in our rooms tonight to be ready for an early flight tomorrow to Zimbabwe.

Another early morning, another buffet breakfast and a flight to catch.
With the bags packed the night before, we were packing in a buffet breakfast to head to the airport for our flight to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
Mini shoutout to Airlink - their service and flights have been absolutely amazing. Check-ins and inflight were just so easy and smooth with plenty of food and drinks inflight.
We arrived at our accomodation in Victoria Falls called Bethel, and met our guide who would be looking after us for the next few days. After unpacking and finding our rooms, we were on our way to an evening river cruise up the Zambezi River.
The cruise was delightful, with our own band playing, bar service, and catering. Cruising up the river we saw crocodiles, a heap of hippos and elephants, and bird wildlife. The biggest treat was the evening sunset which lit up the sky in a bright African red. We even found out that we were going across to Zambia for a while!

    22. syyskuuta 2025, Sambia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Pa and Cece were left to watch the kids as we left early with Emily and Amos to take on the Devil’s Pool. Our pick up shuttle was early as we headed across the Victoria Falls bridge and across the border from Zimbabwe to Zambia. The border posts were… interesting.. as a power outage had affected their ability to process passports and visas. After what felt like 5 different people had handled our passports, we were on our way.
We caught a boat out to Livingstone Island in the middle of the falls, and were lucky to be sitting a row back as Emily and Amos became our bug catchers. At the island in the middle of the Zambezi river, we zipped through mini rapids, currents, rocks and animals to a place where we stripped down, limited our carrying material, and slowly waded into the waters.
It was our first view of the falls, and we were blown away. This deep ravine that seemed to be Africa’s sink! It seemed dicey and precarious to wade through these currents as only metres away was the edge but we got to the pools.
We took turns crossing the 4m deep pools where fish nibbled your toes and legs. After a few photos over the edge, you could feel the water pushing over the falls and drawing you in as well. You could peer down to see the misty bottom and a full circular rainbow.
After we swam back to shore again for a hearty breakfast and reminisce our experience.

We saw Victoria Falls by water, and this afternoon it would be by land and air. We caught a taxi to the markets outside where the National park is for Victoria Falls. The walk was nice, listening to the roar of the waterfalls and feeling their mist as we approached. There were about 15 different lookout points along the walkway to look at the falls. It was beautiful but we underestimated the length of the walk and the heat of the day with the kids so had to end before we got to the end of the walk.
After a quick nap at home and a shop, we left to get a helicopter view of the falls. Lennox could hardly contain his excitement at the helicopter field, and had his nose pressed against the glass the whole time. Rory enjoyed it a little less, but seemed amused at having her headphones on the whole time. The flight circled the falls before returning to base. It was an incredible flight and a wonderful experience to see the Falls from such a perspective and to experience flying in a helicopter.
