    Looking for an invisible elephant

    June 29, 2023 in Rwanda ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Last chance to explore rwandan nature before I move to Kenya, in the famous Akagera National Park. One of the biggest national parks in Africa, unfortunately almost destroyed due to extensive hunting activities until 1994. Now it's still in the reconstruction phase - new animals are being introduced, existing once slowly increase their population. The size of the park wasn't our friend this time - after 7h driving we haven't spotted any single elephant, despite very intense tries. Nevertheless, silne other animals showed up and we got so tired, that coming back to the city was the only option. Summary: interesting experience with the bitter aftertaste of humans made destruction of nature. I hope to see Akagera thriving in the next years!Read more

Nairobbery? Maybe, but also fun city :)

    July 2, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Arrived to Kenya! Second country on my way and even if I still stay in East Africa, the differences between Kigali and Nairobi are huge. I have to say goodbye to perfectly clean streets, regulated traffic and safety at night. The first thing I got as part of the briefing were security instructions - where to go, what to do to not get robbed instantly. It's discomfort, it's annoying, but well,I had worse in South America. On the other hand Uber works everywhere, drivers know the city and are so nice, that almost every drive is fun conversation. I haven't met anyone who cannot speak English yet - this makes connecting to people much easier. On top of everything, there is culture - starting with great Jazz Festival on the first data, I could continued with chilled afternoon in K1 Club, listening to various local live music. I didn't forget about the nature of course - within the city there are multiple animal conservatories available. I decided to start with Giraffe Center, where young animals are being saved and prepared to be released into the wild. Allowing tourists to feed them with snacks ensures surviving of the place and let us get more knowledge from the excellent guides. Definitely worth visiting! After that run through huge reptiles center in the National Museum , learning how soft the feet of baby crocodiles are and with the rest of my energy absolved a few walking tour in Nairobi. Tomorrow I'll head to Massai Mara, but already looking forward to come back to this city :)Read more

    True Safari Experience

    July 4, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

One picture is worth 1000 words they say - if so, then there is no need to write anything about Massai Mara. I decided to have a budget trip here, but even so I could see plenty of animals every day, especially leopards and cheetahs from such a short distance, that I could almost touch them. The camp, which was supposed to be a budget accommodation, exceeded all expectations - super clean safari tent with bathroom and got shower, very good food served always on time, O couldn't imagine a safari organized better :) All was fun, but I'm done with drive safaris for now, after spending 10h in the car again I can't wait to go for a bike trip to Hells Gate near Naivasha and hike more!Read more

Bike & hike in Hell's Gate

    July 7, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

After the first day in Naivasha and being too tired to even write a word beside the pictures yesterday, today more content :) The plan of the day was to explore Hells Gate NP, the only park in Kenya that can be visited by bike. Conveniently, quite good mountain bikes can be rented near the entrance and the adventure can begin! It was so nice to finally do silne sports and enjoy nature without a car. After around 1 h of biking between zebras, giraffes and baboons I reached the gorge, where I had to leave to bike. From there it was hiking time! It was a big surprise for me that Kenya is hiding such natural wonders like this park, reminding me so much of a few European National Parks. Going back was a little bit tiring but then O got lucky again - a local teacher coming back to the town offered me a ride, with the lovely statement "I'm not a taxi driver, but you are human in need". On the final of the trip, a delicious lunch in the local bar, recommended by my new friend. Until now, Kenyan towns have been treating me well:)Read more

    Up to the volcano again!

    July 8, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

The best medicine for a cold is a serious hike - this what people told me here seeing me sneezing and feeling down since I came. What can I possibly do wrong, let's try it! A little bit late I arrived at the entry of Mt Longolot National Park. Not very high, but still challenging dormant volcano is one of the main attractions of the region. And not only for Tourist - I met crowds of local students, school trips but also older folks very willing to chat. So almost without noticing I got to the crater, where the actual hike started, up to the top of the highest point of the crater. It was really beautiful and rewarding "warm up" before the upcoming Mt Kenya trip. And unique opportunity to experience locals hiking, exchanging food and sorties.Read more

    Long journey to namegiver mountain

    July 10, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Next stage of my trip was simple on theory - getting from town Naivasha to town Nanyuki, next to the Mt Kenya, which is the actually source of the name of the country. The very short looking journey took me over 5h, showing again that traveling with matatu can be fun and unpredictable activity. After multiple car changes, stops and finally 1,5km walk with my whole luggage I arrived at my green oasis on the edge of the town. The next day I decided to keep it slow and don't do too much activity, just strolling in Nanyuki and visiting the equator market. Once again, the feeling is I'm the only tourist around here, stone white folks in my place area here only due to do business. Now the next chapter is coming, 5 days long hike on the mount Kenya!Read more

    Mount Kenya

    July 14, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Diamond in the crown of all my hiking trips in Africa - highest mountain in Kenya and second highest after Kilimanjaro, I couldn't miss such an opportunity. To stay on the safe side I booked ( like 100% of other people met on the way) the tour in the local agency, so I got not only a guide, but also a full crew to support me. Such luck! The only way to survive in these winter conditions (-5 at night) is to get proper guiding, food and tent. Thanks to those heroes I managed to get on top of the highest peak of Kenya accessable by hiking. Starting the trip at 3 am, we walked the first few hours under the perfectly visible Milky Way, just to see a mind-blowing sunrise on the top. On the very long way back we passed through one of the biggest afro alpine forests in the world. Despite all the freezing at night and light altitude sickness, this adventure was one of the best experiences during that trip!Read more

    First days on the coast

    July 17, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

After all the climbing and freezing, getting a train to Mombasa and 6h later being in the coastal part of Kenya was quite a big change. The climate is radically different - warm, sunny and humid, with occasional heavy rains. Today I was lucky - got great weather for the morning walk along the beach and some showers when I was negotiating the prices for multiple not needed products with the local merchants on the market. Also people are slightly different here - majority are Muslims, many of them with roots in Oman, India or even south Iran ( long story, look for keyword Baluchistan). I've seen the first actual old city in East Africa and tasted the best Biryani of my life. In general - food and hospitality on the coast are on a galactic level, let's see if the "touristy" south will keep the level set by the North. Last but not least - new means of transport, the Tuktuks! Yay another invention of the "3rd world" that I would wish to have at home sometimes, works like a charm.Read more

    Going on the tree(house)

    July 18, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Today's rather short update - after a 3h long journey between Mombasa and Diani Beach, I checked in on the most interesting accommodation so far - big, fully functional flat on the tree, very next to one of the best sandy beaches that Kenya has to offer. Tomorrow I will get a chance to dive deeper in nature and stroll around , but the next 3 days here are already very promising.Read more
