    Sunny England to Foggy France

    May 15, 2018 in England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

While we waited for the ferry after an uneventful drive to Dover Mandy put on some sun screen as it had turned from being quite cool to nice and warm and we watched a Spitfire fly up and down the coast, still patrolling after all these years. Arriving into Dunkirk harbour at 6pm we couldn't see land at all until we were about to reach the dock because it was so foggy. Then our sat nav decided it doesn't like France so we used Google maps in my phone to find our hotel au gallodrome named because it was a cockfighting arena! in Drincham not far from Dunkirk.
After a rustic french meal of local produce served by the French equivalent of Basil Fawlty we went to find the MG owners club who are staying at at a grande hotel 5km away where we were welcomed like long lost friends.

  • Cold damp and windy

    May 16, 2018 in France ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

If it wasn't for the occasional rain, the cold and the driving wind it would be quite nice.
Today we braced the weather and drove to Cassel but only for a couple of hours before heading back to the hotel with our jackets tightly fastened and start planning our trip south. Once it was all plotted and entered into the sat nav we went for a meal with the MG T owners only to be told more than once to stay away from our intended next destination of Rouen so we came back to our hotel and as I write Mandy is plotting our route once again this time to Honfleur.Read more

  • Warmer in Honfleur

    May 17, 2018 in France ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

190 miles today. It started really cold so we wrapped up and left the hood down Mandy looked... well wrapped up!. Lots of motorcyclists passed us on their way to Le Mans for the motto GP - we will be passing Le Mans tomorrow. We crossed the Seine on a lovely bridge at La Havre then dropped down into Honfleur - a warm sunny and stunningly pretty town. Thanks Gay and Christine for recommending it! On our walk we came across a barge being painted blue. Take a look at the photo of the man working on it.
Honfleur is quite touristy but not too busy... We found an interesting large wooden church....I've never seen such a big wooden structure.
Stopping for a beer we met a group of English cyclists from the BASCC they have ridden 171 miles in 4 days so far this week and are having a great time. They are all either in or retired from the army. Hope you make it home safely guys!

  • Alencon

    May 18, 2018 in France ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Changed plans for today as everything booked up by motorcycle fans coming to the Le Mans GP.
Before we left Honfleur we had a last walk down to the harbour to eat Pain au Chocolat and drink our 4.80 euro a cup coffees! So it was at 11am before we set off to fill up with petrol where we met a group of English classic car owners. We were charged over £130 to fill up the tank at the automatic pump then some time next week we will get a refund of the difference between what it actually cost and £130 which I think is a rip off. I hear Asda UK are going to try the idea 😀
Now we are in Alencon 85 miles from last nights stop. The centre of town is quite pretty but we found nearly everywhere closes early on a Friday which is weird. However we did find a nice market and a really good Algerian restaurant where we had a great meal.

  • A trip or a pilgrimage

    May 19, 2018 in France ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Today was a day of meeting pilgrims. This morning we met a couple of motorcyclists who had stayed at our hotel, I wrongly assumed they were on their way to the GP. They were heading back to Switzerland from Spain and hope to get home tonight. The lady was riding a BMW GS which is my favourite modern bike and the man was in a enduro KTM and will compete in his first long distance enduro later this year.
Then at lunch time we deviated to a beautiful little village called St Catherine-de-Fierbois which is where Jeanne-d-Arc got her sword and we got a lovely meal at the Auberge Jeanne d Arc. As we were leaving we got chatting with a couple of cyclists who had cycled from Amsterdam and are heading for Santiago d Compostela in northern Spain following a route of pilgrims.
When we arrived here at Chenay we met a man called Han walking past the hotel.... would you believe on the same pilgramage route as the cyclists!. He was so interesting to talk to that we joined him for dinner and discussed many things. It was another good day.

  • Classic cars and good music

    May 21, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Saturday evening we stayed at the 3 pigeons at Chenay about 60 miles west of Limoges which was close to our friends Derek and Jan who we met on Sunday morning and joined them on a classic car club run to a park. Almost everyone in the run was English and two of the drivers were also musicians so out came an accordion and a hurdy gurdy.
Here is a link to a short video of the English man playing accordion https://youtu.be/nAfQNVXzx4s
Here is a link to Brian explaining how the Hurdy Gurdy works https://youtu.be/nB55PeIWSpw
Sunday night we stayed with Derek and Jan. We admired his classic car collection and then enjoyed a lovely barbecue. Whit Monday is national holiday so no trucks on French roads. The day started sunny so we asked the sat nav to take us to St Emilion in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region and over lunch checked for places not too far away because although warm it got overcast and threatened thunder in the afternoon We found a room in a old chateau vineyard where the owner insisted on moving his car out of the garage come wine store for us to park Blubelle. Finding a place to eat in a national holiday was tricky but we found a really nice pizzaria which also offered some of the nicest wine I have had in a long time.
    Tomorrow we should enter Spain.

  • Technical update

    May 22, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Fingers crossed, all is good so far.
Yesterday I put about 3/4 point of oil in the engine which over filled it a bit but not enough to worry about and half a pint of water in the radiator.
I realised that when I'm cold I can create a heater in the car by pulling up the boot which sits on the lower half of the gear lever. There is quite a draft of warm air comes out. Shouldn't need it much from now on as it has got rather warm today.Read more

  • Estamos en España

    May 22, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We crossed the border into Spain at San Sebastian this afternoon.
After a lovely breakfast this morning our host at the vineyard insisted we try his organic red wine so it wasn't the best way to start a long drive. It was foggy and cool as we left so we had jackets over jumpers which gradually came off as the sun came out. The border had a queue of trucks waiting to enter France which must have been five miles long. I think it was because trucks were banned from the roads on Sunday and whit Monday. Lucky we were going the other way! We still haven't had the hood up yet. Let's hope it stays that way.Read more

  • Paella and Tapas

    May 23, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Once we negotiated the busy roads of Bilbao and Santander we made good progress stopping for a lunch of my first paella in Spain and ended up in a small and not very pretty town called Arriondas.
We walked around this industrial town looking for a restaurant that was open and ended up in a cider bar which has the strange custom of pouring the drink from as high as they can hold the bottle to as low as they can hold the glass then they only pour a little bit. The customer then drinks a bit quickly and throws the dregs into a trough which runs around the foot of the bar or if outside into the street. We ordered what we thought was tapas and got a plate of calimari with chips followed by a plate of chips with three different sauces two of which where hot followed by a plate of crispy chicken pieces and chips. The girl serving us looked like a young Janet Jackson so I was happy to eat whatever she served.Read more

  • What a great drive!

    May 24, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

On the N625 through the mountains. We decided to point the car towards Portugal rather than go to Santiago de Compostela because the weather forecast thunder. As it turned out it was a lovely day and what a great drive. Take a look at the photos. Over 50 miles of sweeping bends and climbs and descents. I unleashed all of my 54 horse power. It took us around six hours to do 150 miles. We ended the day knocking on the door of a modern 4 Star hotel who gave us the room for 60 euros instead of the 77 pounds hotels.com wanted for the same place. Blubelle is in an underground car park which is good as the thunder storm is about to arrive. We had a lovely meal at a truckers restaurant across the road from the hotel. Two nice courses, a bottle of red wine, water and bread for 12 euros
Addition from Mandy...The lake was out of this world beautiful...but has a sad story...7 villages lie under it _ the dam was constructed in the 80's and in the main town Riano the townspeople slept on their rooves to try and stop the demolition...sadly progress is always at a price...but the result is stunning,!

I have just edited day seven adding links to videos of the musicians.

  • nós chegamos em Portugal na chuva

    May 25, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

A nice drive on empty roads from the bumpy roads of Spain to the better roads of Portugal. The weather started dry, we stopped and put up the hood just before the rain started which was on and off and heavy at times. Nothing came in the car which surprised me as we did not put in the side windows. This is the first time since I bought the car nearly three years ago that it has been driven in heavy rain.
The rain cleared as we left the mountainous area and we are now in a beautiful little sleepy town at the top of a hill called Torre de Moncorvo which you will see on the find penguin map in the north of Portugal opposite Porto. We were instant celebrities as we arrived up a long and very steep first gear cobbled road into the centre. If the sat nav had any sense it would have taken us up the road that winds gently up around the edge! Many photos were taken of the car which is now outside the beautiful old hotel Casa da Avó with the tonneau up. We had time to walk around town and visit the church before the sky turned black and the heavens opened.
Our hotel is worth a mention as it was the best so far in terms of old old fashioned luxury Casa da Avó was truly beautiful I will post some pictures.
We are still about 650klms from our destination.

  • Santarem - antiquity hitting hard times

    May 26, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We arrived in this once proud stronghold of Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Visigoths, Moors then Christians after 210 miles of driving.
Well done Peter and little car.
Actually just picked Santarem as has easy to reach hotel and we think we can get to Algarve tomorrow from here.
So not expecting anything we stroll (up hill) to town. Not a great tourist town but it was very interesting. Who discovered Brazil? He is buried here in the ancient church of Grace....not Vasco da Gama .... Pedro Alvarez Cabral! OK the swots among you knew that.
There is a lovely market building and lots of ancient properties in varying stages of decay...think the vandals have been busy. Lots of empty shops shut in the main streets a testament to the success of online purchasing or a decreasing population. However it was beautiful the main square all cream and white against a dark grey sky.

  • Driving

    May 26, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

The roads of England even the motorways have far too many pot holes even on the M25 and to much traffic when compared to the roads of France it is a real pleasure driving in the countryside. We avoid the cities whenever possible. Spain started off very good but as we got south of the mountains the roads deteriorated to the point where we were dodging broken surfaces, holes and dimples. Portugal has by far the best roads best signage and most rescue phones on motorways. Hardly any traffic at all on the Portuguese motorways it is what England must have been like in the sixties. Petrol prices are similar in England and France, they can be 30 cents a litre cheaper in Spain. Portugal has the highest petrol price at around 1.7€ per litre.Read more

  • The best Estremoz has to offer

    May 31, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

After a few relaxing and totally enjoyable days with my friend Verner it is time to set off home via a different route.
We stopped at Silves and walked up to the pretty castle. I got talking to a classical guitarist who was playing outside for coins. We chatted for a good twenty minutes, he is Australian.
We stopped for lunch at MC Donald's which had about fifty motorcycles outside. It was great.
Tonight we have ended up in a five star hotel because every other in the area is booked by the motorcyclists who are part of a ride up Portugal, there are thousands of them and we enjoyed having them going past beeping and waving to us in our little car. http://www.les-a-les.com The hotel we found is a thirteenth century castle pousada called Castelo de Estremoz at the top of a cobbled hill. Four poster beds and expensive antiques in every room.
We walked down the hill into town for a meal and came across a religious ceremony so we joined the procession to the church then went and found a restaurant. It looks a nice town.

  • 3500ft up and the little car did well

    June 2, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

And the old driver wasn't too bad either!
I think we must have climbed at least 2,500ft in the rain with steaming roads ...good practice for the. Pyrenees.
N B This post is one day late as it covers Fridays trip from the Castle Estremoz to El Barco d'avila. The N110 we are following is a spectacular drive on great road surface. We passed through Elvas which is a world heritage site...see the amazing aqueduct...also the town is a walled city. The hotel at El Barco didn't look so great but it's location is lovely....Roman bridge and castle surrounded by mountains. Also on this route we followed the cherry growing centre of Spain...now feeling very sick from my 1kilo purchase!Read more

  • Heading for the mountains.

    June 2, 2018 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Tomorrow we reach the mountains, crossing near Pamplona not on main roads so it will be a challenge.
As I write we are experiencing a thunder storm so I hope it clears up overnight or we might stay here a day longer.
We are in a lovely little hotel built 600 years ago in a village called El Royo. Chosen because it was as far as we wanted to drive today. Today's drive was on really good roads with beautiful scenery. We stopped for lunch at a tapas bar in Torrecabaileros then later for a coffee at a interesting looking town called San Esteban de Gormaz. Take a look at the pictures. We need to leave before they close the road tomorrow as the is a bicycle race coming through the village at 11am.

  • Technical update 2

    June 3, 2018 in France ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

    Happily nothing major to report.
There are only two fuses normally on the TC. It blew one of them a couple of days ago. The fuse was the one which by passed the ignition and feeds the ancillary items it is 35amp. The car is positive earth however I have phone chargers and sat nav wired the other way and isolated from the chassis. They have their own fuse in that line and it blew that also so that might be a clue. I couldn't find anything wrong and it hasn't done it again.

The other problem caused the car to misfire going up a mountain, by the time I found a bus stop to pull up in I had worked out it was ignition and probably not a plug. I took out the rotor arm from the distributor and cleaned it with the fine wire brush I use for cleaning spark plugs. That did the trick so within a few minutes we were back on the road.

  • encore une fois nous sommes en France

    June 3, 2018 in France ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Not as many miles as usual today because it was very twisty with many tight hair pin bends in the pyrenees. It started raining hard when we got about 3/4 way through so we stopped in a village and sheltered until it stopped. The car never missed a beat over the mountains. The steepest had it in second gear a few times with a very slow average speed.
Lunch at a roadside cafe was fun with people wanting to sit in the car for photos.
We are now just into France at St Jean Pied de Port which is where a lot of pilgrims start the journey to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. It's a surprisingly lovely town clearly catering to tourists and focusing on the pilgrims. A Japanese pilgrim was earning money to continue his journey by cutting hair on the street so both of us had a haircut while he told us his story. He started two years ago in Tokyo and has traveled right across Asia and Europe hitchhiking and cutting hair to earn money as he travels. After Spain he is going to Portugal then to England then Switzerland. We have met some fascinating people in this trip.
Tonight's hotel is simple with a nice veranda overlooking the pool and garden. I think we are the only guests.

  • Eating in

    June 4, 2018 in France ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

The rain stopped long enough for us to enjoy a walk in the town. On the way back we were going to pick up a take away pizza and eat it on our terrace at the room. It started raining hard enough for us to hurry to the pizza shop only to find it closed today. Across the road and near our hotel is a supermarket so we went in dripping wet and bought things we didn't need to cook, last year we did this and it cost over 40euros so we have learned our lesson this cost 14.50!
As we got back I got talking to a man from Brasil who has organised a party of eight who flew in from Sau Paulo today to ride the pilgrims route starting tomorrow. They will cycle 70klm a day for 13 days. The first few days will be hard work as it is the way came in the car.

  • Oh my god

    June 5, 2018 in France ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Last night we could hear very heavy rain outside our hotel and in the morning it had reduced to drizzle so I folded the very wet tonneau and put up the hood. Within a few minutes of starting of the rain began to fall harder and harder until it was bouncing off the road and I had to slow down to be able to see road ahead. It stayed like that for two hours. Thankfully the hood is very good and the side deflectors I added to the screen stopped most of it coming in so we continued without the side windows. Breakfast was bought from the supermarket before we set off and eaten in the car as it was raining too hard to stay out of the car for more than a few seconds. Eventually the rain relented to on and off drizzle so we stopped and had a kabab sandwich and a coffee. Mandy's left sleeve of her jacket was wet and so was my right one. The afternoon was better weather but the hood stayed up. At lunch we decided on a destination for the night and set of towards it only to see the sky darken again and more torrential rain hit us. The car was great it never faultered.
We arrived without booking at this lovely place and I drove the car straight into the sheltered garage then asked for a room. Take a look at the pictures it really is nice. After a rest we walked the 2 kilometers into town and had a look around. The restaurant we ended up in was fantastic. The owner noticed we were hurrying to finish when thunder roared close by. He insisted we take our time and gave us a lift in his car back to the hotel. What a nice man. As I write it is raining very hard again but I am not bothered as our little car is nice and snug and dry, and so are we!

  • What a difference a day makes

    June 6, 2018 in France ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Being several hundred kilometres north helps...
The poor weather continued this morning so after a lovely breakfast which even included a sprinkling of rose petals on the table the day started with the hood up on the car and both of us wearing rain coats inside the car. It wasn't hard rain like yesterday but it did have is moments and one of those was when we stopped at McDonald's for a coffee. It wasn't raining when we went in but the heavens opened just for five minutes as we drank our coffee which was enough to soak Mandy's seat and the Michelin map book she left on it.
Once we got about 50km north of Limoges it became noticeably warmer and the sky began to clear so off came the jackets. We still didn't get it enough to put down the hood as we could see rain falling to our right.
We are now at Issoudun in a budget hotel and have just had a nice meal at a nearby La Boucherie steak house which was recommended by an Englishman at the hotel who had admired the car. He works for an English company who upholsters aircraft seats for a nearby Boeing factory. He said he had upholstered an MGTA when he was an apprentice.
Before the meal we had a walk down town to see the church which was closed and the river which flows well after all the rain. A beer at a sit outside bar gave us the sustenance to walk the 3000 steps according to my phone back to the hotel then a further 1500 to the steak house where we meet the Englishman and his colleague again.
