  • 5.2 Strasbourg: La Petite France

    20–21 Ogo 2024, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

I had a lovely day wandering around La Petite France: no agenda, no time restrictions, beautiful weather, and good food. I was contemplating going to a museum today, but I will do that tomorrow.

  • 6. Strasbourg: Alsatian Museum

    21–22 Ogo 2024, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

The Alsatian Museum is on today's agenda. I first went to the train station to buy some train tickets for tomorrow and Saturday's activites. I ended up in the busiest streets and places where tons of pedestrians were walking. I was relieved to get out of there and needed some reprieve. I headed back to the hostel and bought a sandwich for lunch. Then, ready for another tour on the bike, I headed to the museum, and found it with not too much difficulty, navigating the streets while listening to Google Maps. Weather was beautiful, and the bike is still in one piece (as am I lol!).Baca lagi

  • 7.2 Schoenenbourg Fort

    22–23 Ogo 2024, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

This fort was left abandoned until some men decided to make it into a museum. Very mind-blowing experience to visit this site. Civilians dug out all the tunnels (not machines) over a 9 month period and were paid by the military. The fort was used for about 1 month until the Germans bombed it heavilly. The French Commander of the fort wanted to continue fighting but he was ordered to surrender by his superior. The commander believed in the motto of the fort was "On ne passe pas" meaning "no-one passes." After the French surrendered, the Germans did not use the fort.Baca lagi

  • 7.1 Le Fort de Schoenenbourg

    22–23 Ogo 2024, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Main goal for today: the Schoenenbourg Fort of the Maginot Line. Yesterday, I had asked how to get to the fort, and I was given confirmation of what I had researched. I had some doubts, because of some information I had found, but I thought I have come all the way from Canada, and I really wanted to see this fort. This morning, my navigating went a bit awry, but I got to the train station with about 10 minutes to spare. I got to Soultz-sous-forêts and asked the clerk at the station, where I could get bus #P37. He looked puzzled and said there aren't any busses but I could go to the tourism office to get info. I found my way there, only to find that it was through appointment only. I then saw a sign for the mayor's office, but it was also closed. Fortunately, a man (Marcel) was there too and he offered to give me a lift to the fort.Baca lagi

  • 9. La Ferme Rothof

    24–25 Ogo 2024, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Goal for today: finding Jean Gerber's farm in Rothof. He was born in 1742 and if memory serves me correctly, he was our great-great-great-great grandfather. (I forgot my documents in Canada about the genealogy that I got from Lorraine Roth.) I mapped out the trek, and wrote it out by hand because I didn't think that I would get a very good GPS signal where I was going. Of course, the streets and roads had no signs, so that was a challenge. The main road, D27, had many signs, but that was about it. At one point, I was in the forest, and luckily, a lumberjack, Stephen, was there sawing logs. He helped me figure out which direction I needed to go, so I turned around, and continued straight. I recognized the images from Google Maps of the final destination. I was relieved to find the farm, but very disappointed to find it very dilapidated. Whoever owns it uses it for the land and as a junk yard to fix cars. There was the very strong smell of fire. As I left, I saw a heap of brush still smoldering.Baca lagi
