  • León Day 2

    1–2 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Our mission today is to find new shoes. And, to take it easy! We had a nice supper with a young couple who are doing the camino for their honeymoon. Then, they are going to the base camp of Mount Everest to climb 5500 metres. Finally, they will go to Japan before they return to their work. Molly is a trainer for submarine rescue. Her husband Jeff, is an artillery technician. They got married in April on a camp/base outdoor environment and now have a 4 month leave for their honeymoon.Leia mais

  • León Day 3

    2–3 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

I was awoken at 5:00 pm in the morning by a group of youngins that were calling each other "puta," something "muerte" (you're going to die), and one of the males spat in a girls face twice, he was banging on tables, kicking on doors, and throwing food. They were obviously drunk and having sone kind of lovers quarrel. Bruno, a historian from Brazil, also was awoken and we talked about why he is leaving Brazil to relocate in Italy. Politics are corrupt, inflation, homophobia (he is gay, not that it matters to me) but there are many deaths of transgender people so the environment has a lot of hatred. We went for breakfast and then he left to go to his volunteer job at an albergue that he arranged through "Workaway." He is an English teacher in a poorer neighborhood with challenging conditions.Leia mais

  • Train: León to Sarria (NOT) --> OURENSE

    3–4 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

I had a good sleep and woke up at 9:00am. After breakfast, I spent about 3-4 hours trying to make reservations for the last stretch of the camino. Many places are full because of the holidays and the fact that the last stages (100km) of the camino are the ones required to get the certificate at Santiago de Compostelle. I then walked 10 minutes, without incident, to the train station carrying my extra bag.Leia mais

  • Bus: Ourense to Sarria

    4 de agosto de 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Remember how I said that I got to the train station without incident? Well, that is still true. However, the 2nd leg of the journey was not by train, but instead by bus. When I switched over to the bus, I asked if the bus was going to Sarria, and the answers was yes. Because my " train" ticket only had 2 segments to it, I didn't think that there was another change-over so I stayed on the bus and I ended up stranded in Ourense which is 1.5 hours away at 10:30 pm. The agents at the station were helpful and gave me a bus voucher for the next day, to get to Sarria. Luckily, there was a hostel just 2 mins. from the station, where I got a room (shared bathroom) for 32€. I had a good night's sleep because there were no people snoring or rustling around all night. All things happen for a reason! I met Chérie on the bus and we had a "jordy" of a time!!!Leia mais

  • Sarria to Ferreiros

    5–6 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Had an awful night's sleep. A girl claimed my bunk while I was having lunch yesterday. I moved her things aside and lay down to have a nap. When she returned, she woke me up, asked where her things were and admitted that she saw my bags, but didn't know if I had claimed the bottom or the top bunk. So, her and her friend claimed both bunks. Cherie stood up for me, and the youngins let us be. However, their whole gang was noisy, up and about until 11:30, even though the curfew was 11pm. Today, I was awake at 4am and got up at 5. Cherie and I hit the road at 6, and after breakfast, parted ways so that Cherie can complete the Camino in 5 days. The distancefor me was 13.5 kms. My pedometer registered 14.89 kms.Leia mais

    6–7 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

I woke up this morning at 7:10am . I didn't hear my alarm which was set for 6:00am, because I had put my earplugs inlast night. I was on the road by 7:50am. It was a foggy, peaceful morning. The albergue restaurant wasn't open, so I just started walking.Leia mais

    6–7 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

On the way, I met Suzanne from Angers, France. We walked together for the latter part of the afternoon. After arriving at the albergue, taking a shower, and doing my laundry, I had a nice meal with 5 Spanish men. Mostly, I just listened to them speak Spanish and watched some of the olympics on the TV. I tried some "crème" which is very similar to Baileys, for a digestif/desert. It was a 3 hour meal. In the dorm, Tammy loaned her mat, elastic band, and ball, so that I could do "proper" stretches on yhe floor. Up until now, I have been doing only cursory stretching. Tammy's birthday is August 11th, and she will arrive in Santiago on her birthday. Her birthday is the same date as Suzanne's mother's birthday. There were 5 empty bunks in our dorm which was weird because it has been a real challenge to find beds in the albergues since Sarria. Too many "tourists" and huge groups of people.Leia mais

    6–7 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

The albergue was really nice! The female owner worked the reception, the bar, cooking in the kitchen, serving, and who knows what else. She was very generous and hard working! I didn't take many photos because there was always a lot of people around. I enjoyed my stay here very much, and I slept like a log because of the fresh air!Leia mais

  • Gonzar to San Xulián

    7–8 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today is a 20.4 km walk. My pedometer registered 21.4 kms. I had a good night's sleep because of the fresh air that came in the open window right beside my bunk. I was up at 5:50 and on my way around 6:30. It was still dark and nice and cool. When Suzanne and I stopped for her breakfast, there was a bus load of people and many Italians. There was 1 man making coffees and serving everyone. There was no line up but a horizontal competition at the counter to place the order. One lady dropped her cafe au lait (somebody bumped into her) because people were crowding the single door entrane/exit and the counter area. People were loud and obnoxious, then left their dishes on the tables, and did not acknowledge other pilgrims that were beyond their immediate travel-mates. Along the path, not many people said the traditional "hola" or "buen camino." The humble pilgrim attitude was not very apparent today and it was instead, replaced with a self-absorbed, disrespectful tourist complacency that is drenched in entitlement that screams "me, myself, and I." This evening, Enzo arrived at the albergue after doing 50 kms today. We discussed the spirit of the camino, which has changed after Sarria. He also finds the spirit of the pilgrim has been lost after Sarria. It has become a tourist attraction; not "the way" to a clearer understanding of oneself in a reflective mindset in silence and solitude, and respect for others with kindness.Leia mais

  • San Xulian to Melide

    8–9 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

During the night, I vomited and started having the runs. In the morning, I felt like crap!! Suzanne and I started off after having breakfast at the albergue. The hosts were very empathetic to our condition and said that the day before, there had been three people with a virus, one of which was taken to the hospital. They suggested we got sick because of the water. Suzanne looked after me very well and stayed with me until about 11:00am. She needed to carry on because she needed to walk 24 kms to meet her father who was coming to join her for the last 37 kms. I finally dragged my butt into the albergue O Apalpador in Melide around 2:00pm. I showered and Antonio, the hospitaleros, did my laundry in the machine. I went to bed, and slept....and slept. Around 4:30pm I woke up and hung up my laundry that was beside my bunk. I went back to bed and slept all night, restlessly, because my back was killing.Leia mais

Woke up at 7:00am. I felt much better! Antonio made toast and coffee for me and then I was on my way around 8:00am. The distance according to the guidebook is about 14 kms. My pedometer registered 14.51 kms. It was a beautiful day, sunny, and not too hot. Most of the walk was shaded, and a few inclines. I arrived at the albergue in Arzúa at 12:50pm.Leia mais

    9–10 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

I went for a bite to eat, up the street from the albergue to the restaurant Parillada. The food was fine, but the service stank. The man that brought me my cutlery put his hands on the ends that were going in my mouth. The waitress I asked for the bill and the rest of my food "to go" ignored me. Finally, the man gave me a piece of foil, so I scraped my food on to it. Never going back there again! Lol! (The chances of me going back are close to zero anyway!)Leia mais

  • Arzúa to Salceda

    10–11 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

I had a good sleep. The bed was comfortable and the window was right beside my bunk, which let the cool air in. I had my leftover steak and fries for breakfast and hit the road at 7:50am. I met the host, Gabriela, on her way into work. Her family friend, Esther, also works at the albergue (I met her yesterday. She does all the laundry for the albergue: bedding, towels and she is 72 years old. Super nice lady that speaks German, from Austria). The walk today, according to the guidebook is about 11 kms. My pedometer registered 12.8 kms. The walk went well. Thank goodness for the shade because it was hot and humid today (like yesterday) and I was literally drenched in sweat yet again. As though I had taken a shower in my clothes. At the place I had lunch, Gavin, from BC, Canada, showed up. I had met him at Roncesvalles. The albergue is 300 metres off the camino route and after arriving, I had a nap for about 2 hours. At 6pm, I went to the albergue restaurant area and had a Fanta, but it was WAY TOO HOT!! I went back to my bunk where it is cooler.Leia mais

    11–12 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Got up at 7am and on the road at 8:00 am. The guidebook shows about a 18kms trek for today. My pedometer registered a distance of 19.34 kms. It was a nice morning and within 30 minutes, I was sweating and eventually drenched in sweat. My ankle that I sprained years ago was acting up so I needed to focus on how to alleviate the discomfort while walking (lifting with the thigh instead of pushing off the ground with the foot). I arrived at the albergue at 1:55 pm, just before it opened. Check-in took 30 minutes because the hostess was alone, and took each person individually to their accomodations. The albergue is brand, spankin' newly renovated!! And... drum roll... THERE IS AIR CONDITIONING!! Woo hoo!Leia mais

  • Lavacolla to Santiago de Compostela

    12–13 de ago. 2024, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today, is the home stretch of the camino for me. 10 kms to go. A lot was up hill, the weather was nice, and my right ankle was ok. Getting from the outskirts to the cathedral was half of the journey. Finally, when I got to the cathedral, a lot of people were in the plaza, and I decided to get my credenciel right away. I found the pilgrim office, registered on their system, waited in line, the clerk issued my certificate, I told her it was my birthday, and then all of the other clerks joined her in singing Happy Birthday in Spanish. That, is what brought tears to my eyes; not the sight of seeing the cathedral, but the act of kindness of strangers to another stranger. I then had a heck of a time finding my hostel. My bag didn't arrive by the transport service, so I spent the next 2 hours, sweaty, on the phone with the credit card company trying to get the authentification process figured out. In the evening, I went down to the entrance from the 4th floor (of course my room is on the top floor, all stairs, no elevator) and there was my bag. "Good things come to those who wait." I went for a bite to eat, because at this point, I was very grumpy, tired, sweaty, hungry, and fed up with technology. After hungry times, I took a shower, and of course, had to talk to Mr. G to make sure that he didn't forget my birthday!! Lol!!Leia mais

Checked out of my room because I had reserved only 1 night. I requested to extend by 1 night, but I didn't get a response. A young clerk phoned a taxi for me which took about 30 minutes. I got to my new room, but there was no way to get in (apartment building) and check-in wasn't until 3pm. Fortunately, a resident left the building and I snuck my bags in. I walked to the core of Santiago in weather that was grey and drizzling. There were lots of tourists. I spent the entire day wandering around the old streets. At 6:30, I hobbled to my rental. Of course, my luck, there was a message from my previous hostel saying that I could stay another night!!Leia mais

Nacho, the man I rented last night's room from, ordered a taxi for me yesterday for 4:30 am. My flight to Barcelona took off at 6:45am and landed at 8:25am. In Barcelona, I had a 4 hour layover until 12:25pm for my flight to Lyon, landing at 1:55pm. Then, first train from Lyon to Grenoble, my connecting train from Grenoble at 17h25 was cancelled due to a storm. The next connecting train was at 20h21 from Grenoble to Lyon-part-dieu. The last leg of the jorney was a third train from Lyon-part-dieu to Mâcon was at 22h18 and arriving at Mâcon at 23h04. My original arrival should have been at 8:05pm. Eva picked me up at the station. • Mâcon to Strasbourg (TGV)

    16 de agosto de 2024, França ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Eva took me to the train station and we waited together on the platform for the TGV to arrive at 2:16pm. My seat was #74 in the upper level, and when I found it, it was occupied. The lady in my assigned seat said that she had changed seats and that I could have her seat, if I wanted to. I asked her, "et si je ne veux pas?" She replied that she would return to her seat. I said that I was joking and asked her for the seat number. So, I went below, and found seat #47. The rest of the trip went smoothly. The TGV INOUI did not post the speed of the train, but normally, the highest speed is 295 km/h. The 2 videos posted are to show what it looks like from the inside of the train. 3:54pm arrival in Strasbourg. I found tram C then got off at stop Gallia. I found The Strasbourg People hostel by taking the "indirect" walking route (where are the street signs when you need 'em ??)Leia mais

  • 2. Strasbourg: new wheels

    17 de agosto de 2024, França ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Mission for today: Getting a set of wheels. Once I got my wheels, I went for a little detour on a trail on the outskirts of the city. Then I turned around to head back to the hostel. I was in the city, stopped at a light, making a left turn with other bikes, and another biker crashed into me. My phone flew out of the bike basket onto the street. I needed to get out of the intersection, and fortunately a young girl picked up my phone and brought it to me before a car drove over it!! I took a drink of water, and got back on the bike, and continued on my merry way. The most important is that nobody got hurt, the bike is still in one piece, and my phone doesn't have a scratch on it. Lesson learnt: use hand signals even though nobody else uses them!!Leia mais

Raining today. I got my rain poncho, my backpack, and lots of water. I used a new app for bike trails but the voice talked as though it was on helium! It was French directions, mixed with German names, spoken in English. Really messed me up. Then, there was a downpour so I stopped where I was and waited for the rain to subside. I mostly went to places that I wasn't intending to go. I didn't get many photos because I was biking in the rain, while listening to a helium addict, and trying my best to avoid any further mishaps.Leia mais

  • 4. Strasbourg: Municipal archives

    19–20 de ago. 2024, França ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I emailed the mayor of Insviller, and she said the information I'm looking for can be obtained via email; I don't have to go there. So, for today, I decided to go to the mayor of Strasbourg. Once there, I was referred to the municipal archives. When I got there, it was around noon, and I spent the afternoon there. I really missed my calling! I should have become a professor so that I could do research. -- The clerk was very helpful, and there were 3 times that I stumped even him, but eventually, he figured it out. There was a type of "compendium" that had been compiled by high school students. From that, the information found according to the census of 1789, the address found was used to find the person's residence by quarter, and if they were an owner or renter, their occupation, as well as their "tribe," which is basically their social class (military, peasant, bourgeois etc.) I skimmed through all the names and found "Albrecht, Bast, Gerber." I have no idea who these people are, I just did this activity today for fun, and to get some understanding of the method.Leia mais
