  • KaYoa Island Day 2 - Side Show

    10 januari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

10am was go-time today. Go where you may ask? Wherever our “hog” would take us (subject to basically one road that circled the island),

FYI: Hog = a scooter with a side car. 🏍️

Plan of attack… There was a secluded beach that Mike read about that seemed intriguing so off we went to explore the island and find this beach… and lunch…
and a Slurplee (there are 7Elevens everywhere in Thailand if I haven’t mentioned that yet!)… and the islands “best” coffee. Happy to report we nailed 3 out of the 4.

And then we wrapped up the day with a wonderful dinner at the Rice Paddy, owned by a German man named Frank.

    Here’s the run-down of the day’s side-car show:

*Lunch - Sabai Corner Bungalows. Food was a 7, view was a 8. Would have been a 9, maybe 10 if some “punks” didn’t swoop up the last of the seaside seats. It had a hammock so just imagine Mike’s seat envy at this point. 😉

Disclaimer: We have zero idea of these two young men were punks. But they punked the last good spot so we went with it.

*Beach - Long Beach (not S-n-double o-p’s home turf). This beach took some off-roading (and maybe airing down of some tires - jk, it didn’t) to get to and led us to what may be the highlight of my day… puppies! Sitting along the road to this beach were about 3-4 puppies. We stopped (naturally) and then a total of 11 fur friends surrounded us with puppy excitement! Payton would be less than pleased if we gifted her with a pup that would disturb her sleep patterns so we won’t be stuffing one in our suitcase for the flight home. But tempting!

The beach itself was very quiet. Not a lot of people at all and the tide was out so lots of rocks that made it difficult to go in. But it was perfect to relax on the beach and have an internal debate whether the only noise was from the subtle waves moving over the now exposed rocks or the tree leaves rustling from a gentle breeze.

*Coffee - Once we packed up and headed back from Long Beach, we set off to find the best coffee on the island. Mike zoomed all around the island in search of this joe, and then success!!! Not only did it have delish coffee but pastries as well. Definitely had a western vibe.

Juiced up and we were ready to head back to hotel (again no relation to V-town) for a dip in the pool and to get ready for dinner.

*Dinner - The Rice Paddy. Food had wonderful taste and the owner Frank was forefront the experience. He explained his menu, making suggestions and was in full joy/pride of his creations. 🤍

Ribeye for me, with gratin potatoes and a seafood pasta for Mike. The only hiccup for Frank is he suggested the shrimp head that topped Mike’s pasta was good to eat. That was a big negative for Mike… it was all he could do not to spit that out.

Overall 10/10 for Frank and Rice Paddy!

What happened to the Slurpee??? Glad you asked. Found a machine but no-dice. Not working so talk about a crushed dream. Next time in Thailand!

Tomorrow (Day 3) is island tour day! 🙌🏼

✌🏼to all and all a goodnight,
    🤍M&A🤍

  • KaYoa Island Day 3 - Island Tours Part 1

    11 januari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Before this post kicks off… I’m going to apologize in that the pics, videos and words shared here will more than likely not equate to the true beauty witnessed.

Also, because of all the pics and videos, we are breaking this day’s adventure into “parts”.

    Ok… enough FYI biz…

Today was our private island tour with Alex @ 5 Star Marine. CC (that’s Canadian Chris - “retired and working for you”) did this tour with Alex, put his stamp of approval on it, and now 5 Star opened it up to the public. We’ve been looking forward to this tour and it 100% lives up to the hype. 5 Star Marine is top-notch and we would highly recommend them for any boat tour while in Thailand.

Link to CC video with 5 Star Marine and the tour we did:
    https://youtu.be/MhE9D8Tg1-U?si=7jUklQbPKgPZQ1__

The day started about 12:30pm from Monah Pier. From there we zoomed to Hong Island where we kayaked through two caves (Bat Cave and Oyster Cave) to their respective lagoons, and then kayaked around the outside of this huge island under the limestone overhangs. The sights and sounds… untouched by humans. Perfectly balanced.

Barely squeezing out of the Bat Cave with the kayak (yes there were bats lining the ceiling in the middle of the cave - hence its name)… all three of us laid flat for an exit that will be forever etched into my mind. The cave ceiling was inches from our noses and I even wished I’d skipped breakfast to squeeze through. 😳 But success. We emerged into the lagoon and my breath escaped me. I’ve tuned into CC’s video but this…. This… I can see why Alex is passionate about what he does and sharing it with others.

Monkeys “fishing” for clams (they come down when the tide is out), birds chirping and then sometimes silence where you can hear yourself think (which is scary if you are me… working on Phra KK methods to quiet my inner “roommate” - Untethered Soul reference here).

Other tours traveled in to the lagoons after us but we got through first as Alex knew the exact time the tide would be out for us to slip through before anyone else. He said you can’t trust the apps and he knows how to read the tides on when it’s ok to enter and when it’s time to exit. Some people have gotten stuck in the lagoon when the tide comes back in… and I definitely didn’t sign up for an overnight lagoon trip. Needless to say, we made it safely out of each lagoon. Crazy how fast the tides go in and out…. 🌊

The exterior overhangs were equally impressive… and kept us intrigued as we kayaked around the perimeter of the island until we made our way to a small bay. We beached ourselves and Alex took us to an “upper” cave (a cave above the water?), where we climbed about to another viewpoint. 😍

From here, back to the boat for a little watermelon, pineapple and dragon fruit, and to the next stop!

  • KaYoa Island Day 3 - Island Tours Part 2

    11 januari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Next few stops on the M&A Andaman Sea tour (almost like T-Swifts Era Tour, I’m sure) included James Bond Island, a smaller island, lunch/visit at a floating village (established 200+ years ago), and a S-shaped cruise through mangrove trees.

Bond…. James Bond (island) was a quick stop. Mucho tourist there and Alex offered other unique stops in its place, so after a few drive-by pics, us anti-social humans headed to the floating village of Ko Panyi for lunch.

QUICK TRIVIA: Anyone remember what James Bond movie this island starred in?? Me neither but Mike will, so what’s your guess?

Originally founded by people from Indonesia, Ko Panyi are Thai citizens. Alex said the village is gaining popularity with tourism and seeing growth. In fact, more houses can’t be built into the sea and power was just ran from the mainland to the village, under the sea, only 6 months ago. Before that… diesel generators powered this village. Well that and the power of the simple life…

During our stay, Mike and I not only enjoyed food atop the floating restaurant but sat in silence and took in the children laughing and swimming in their school clothes (no dancing) moments after the school bell rang. No phones, no Snap, no helicopter moms, no pressure of society… just full of joy. I did see an “Angela” at the top of the ramp scared to venture down to jump in the water. Her friend, drenched in sea water (in her school dress) ran up the ramp to encourage “Angela” to come with… not sure if this “Angela” took the leap of faith and ventured down for a dip because it was time for us to depart. But if I had a moment with that “Angela”, this Angela would tell her to go for it! Life is short! Carpe diem!

Also note a mosque, no temple in this village. As we traveled further south in Thailand, the Muslim faith is much more widespread vs Buddhism. They don’t have pork dishes on many menus around these parts because of this and Alex says he never orders pork when he is working out of respect for his Muslim co-workers.

FUN FACT: Alex was a monk for 4 months when he was 20. Said he treasured the experience and it changed his way of thinking and how he wanted to live his life. His brother who was headed down a dark path, turned to Buddhism and remains a monk today. 🙏🏼

Before I “leave” the topic of this village, can we also acknowledge the floating soccer field? Alex said the kids got tired of racing boats and wanted to play “football”. Not the Z-tackling fuel type but the what-we-call-soccer kind. They originally built platforms out of wood that floated. Alex said they were uneven and caused a lot of stubbed toes (he didn’t say that but I imagined it would). Talk about balance and training on a constantly moving platform?!?!? Their first year competing on the mainland they made it to the championships! It brought attention to their village so people donated the current field that you see today. Pretty sure Olympic teams will catch on to this moving field soon. It seems like it would equivalent to training in altitude for a race! I wouldn’t know because this vessel wasn’t built for racing but it’s what “they” say. Make note that you heard it first here. 😉

Next stop… the Mangrove trees. These trees are not only found here but all over the islands and in lagoons. You probably saw a few pics in our Part 1 post. How their roots stretch from their trunk down into the soil, allowing for water to ebb and flow with the tides. Alex told us that in some areas people have to be told not to climb on the single mangrove trees, as they aren’t strong by themselves. But… he went on to say that when many mangrove trees are together and their roots intertwine with one another, they become really strong! Isn’t that SO true for us humans too?!?! Living in community with others is how God intended us to live. Each of us bringing our own “roots” to share with one another, with the goal of supporting and strengthening one another, right?

Ok… I’ll stop. But crazy how mangrove trees live like we all should! You may take away something else from this mangrove rant but whatever it is, I hope it made your day better! 🤍

Next stop was a small beach/island that was busy during our first pass… but the coast was clear for our second attempt. This island stop allowed our boat captain to back in and let us off right on the beach. Alex says people can go back into this cave and camp. Perfect place for a BBQ and if it rains, there is a smaller cave off to the side for shelter. We didn’t stay long enough for a BBQ as the sun was beginning to set and it was time to get into place for the grand finale… the sunset, one more cave and then the bioluminescence water show!

  • KoYao Island Day 3 - Island Tour Part 3

    11 januari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

The last leg of our tour included one last cave, a sunset and then the super anticipated bioluminescence experience.

More details on what bioluminescence is here:
    https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resour…

One. Last. Cave. If you watched the movie, Thirteen Lives, get ready for a video that may gave you the same feel. I’ll be honest, and tell you the truth because I don’t want to lie (😂 - LT “Dan”) those movie scenes started to swirl in my mind as we proceeded. I made it clear to M and Alex that if we got stuck they have my permission to drug me to swim me out. No waivers needed, just dope me up, no questions asked. Approved.

The time spent in movie land was short lived as once again we exited the cave to another untouched paradise. But there was something in this paradise that I didn’t expect. Walking fish… yep. Fish that actually “walk” with the tiniest of arms. They wait for the tide to go out, come out of their mud and then walk. When the tide starts to come back in, they must get back to their mud-hole asap. If they miss their window of opportunity, Alex said they will wait on rocks and mangrove trees until the tide goes back out. Similar to the humans that miss the boat and get stuck in a lagoon… a sit and wait game.

After surviving the sequel to Thirteen Lives, our jet boat sailed off to enjoy a sunset only a God can be responsible for. Alex brought us a bottle of bubbly for our honeymoon, so I enjoyed a glass and M had a Red Bull to get him fired up for this last part… bioluminescence.

Now that I hyped up this part of it… I’m bummed to report the videos and pics didn’t turn out. 😢 I’m not sure how CC got his videos to come out but once we killed the lights, our videos didn’t show what we experienced. Bummer!!

But let me tell you… these plankton light up like a Griswald Christmas tree. Promise. Alex said they can be white, blue or green. Ours were white!

After about 15-20 minutes in awe, it was time to load up and head back to the pier.

A quick pic with Alex and then jumped aboard the island Taxi back to the hotel (again, not the V-town).

  • KoYao Island Day 4 - Last Day…

    12 januari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Last day in this glorious land…. So much left unseen which is bittersweet. Bittersweet in that we would have loved to see and do it ALL but at the same time, it leaves more reasons for a return trip!

Today was spent relaxing and taking in the views from our hotel (and being sure Mike didn’t “accidentally”toss our passports in the sea).

Coffee, breakfast and then time by the pool / beach until it was time for one last massage. Thankfully these massages were one of theeeeee best of the trip. I even got my dogs cleaned up and polished by probably one of the nicest ladies we’ve met. The cherry on top was her granddaughter showing up after school, so happy and chatty, and practicing her English with me and Mike. Typically I like peace and quiet for times like these, but this little girl had a wonderful spark about her so she got a pass. 😉

After massages, we snagged a snack and then back to pool/beach side to contemplate the trek home. I didn’t dare to say the “p” word to Mike so I let him bring it up.

Packing (the “p” word) commenced before dinner and then it was off to delight in one last authentic Thai cuisine at our hotel’s restaurant before bedtime.

Not too many pics to share of today’s activities (or lack thereof). And who would want to see tears and temper tantrums by Mike anyway??? Jk. No temper tantrums (yet).

The joy of this trip can’t be fully documented. My joy wasn’t only from experiencing SO much of such a wonderful, different country and being perfectly pushed to be more adventurous… my joy also came from witnessing Mike’s joy in sharing his love of this country with me and walking in step together these past 18 days. Very grateful for each and every moment we were provided here in Thailand and for all the people who patiently answered so many of my questions! 😂 God is good!

Thanks to all for coming along with us on our first adventure as husband and wife!! Truly hope each of you find yourselves in Thailand one day (or again) and if you do, I hope our adventure is helpful in planning yours!

Off to the airport early… so see you all very soon back in Cali!

    With much love and gratitude,
    🤍M&A🤍
