    May 9, 2025 in France ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Spent the day in Tours today. Beautiful city on the banks of the Loire. First stop cafe for morning coffee. Couldn't resist the chocolate éclair, then at 1.30pm desperately looking for loo!!.

  • Chateau Chaumont sur Loire

    May 12, 2025 in France ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Following on from yesterday's chateau, we visited chaumont today. There was an international garden festival on which had 50 different displays by different artists from all over the world.
The chateau was owned by Catherine de Medici in 1550 and then sold to Diane de Poitier, who was king Henry's mistress. If you remember, King Henry gave Chenonceau to Diane, but on his death, Catherine, who became Queen, took it back and gave her Chaumont.
Great day, and the sun came out.

  • Santenay

    May 15, 2025 in France ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Travelled around 250 miles today to get further east and south towards Switzerland. First campsite didn't take twin axle caravans so had to drive to one they recommended and we weren't disappointed. Big pitches and nice and quiet less than half full. May stay here a few days as there seems to be plenty to do.Read more

  • Dijon

    May 17, 2025 in France ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We visited Dijon today. Amazing architecture. It was market day, and they say the best in france. Also, some of the roofs had the traditional colour tiling, which is only in this region and stunning.

  • Day cycling

    May 18, 2025 in France ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Cycled from site in Santenay along the voie vert, which is an old railway to Nolay about 7km it was only a short distance, i found another route that took us high into the hills with some good panoramic views The Cirque du Bout du Monde( steep valley head in a unique area). Some tricky bits that required walking with the bikes. We stopped quite a lot as Lynn found lots of wild flowers!! This area is ZNIEFF(natural zones of interest of ecology, floral, and fauna this is why.Read more

  • Lake Annecy

    May 19–21, 2025 in France ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Travelled to Lake Annecy today heading south towards Italy.booked on a nice site for 2 nights, but may stay longer. There are great views across the lake over to the mountains. Weather started to rain early evening and forecast rain for the next few days, so no cycling 🙁. Had a short cycle round part of the lake and will head for the town tomorrow.Read more

  • A day in Annecy town

    May 20, 2025 in France ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Well, it p****d it down most of last night and up to 1.00pm today. Then we had a bit of sunshine. The town was really nice and is known as the French Venice.

  • Cascade de A'ngnon

    May 22, 2025 in France ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Another crap day weather wise, so had morning coffee in the van. Drove to Tallories, other side of the lake. It was still raining, so we walked up to the 35m metre waterfalls of the cascade de A'ngnon, which took around 35 minutes to climb to but even longer down as very slippy. It was worth the walk as it was spectacular. Afterwards, we went into the village for lunch, which we don't normally do. We noticed on way three mastiffs guarding goats in the field. We stopped to take a closer look, and one ran over and started barking. It felt we were a threat.Read more

  • Gorges du fier

    May 23, 2025 in France ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Gorges du Fier is one-off the finest examples of erosion by running water. During heavy rain, the water can rise up to 26m per hour. Some of the pictures show the repairs after flooding in 2019. Then we visited Chataeu Montrottier, which was another great attraction.Read more

  • Day cycling round the lake

    May 24, 2025 in France ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Best day of the week today. Glorious sunshine, so headed out on the bikes. The track was busy with weekend cyclists. Just went halfway round, stopping off at various villages, and ended in Tallories, where we had 24 euro coffees at a hotel. Very exclusive place. Earlier, we had two teas and two 🎂 and cost 21 euros. Had a great meal in the campsite restaurant tonight, so it was an expensive day. Bread and jam for the rest of the week!!Read more

  • Ventoux

    May 25–28, 2025 in France ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Travelled 220 miles to Provence today. When we arrived at the site, we were a little despondent as the site is a little compact, to say the least. Anyway it has a nice pool but the views we had at the last site have gone. We are booked in for three nights. Visiting Avignon tomorrow, should be able to cycle there. Temperature has risen to 30c today. Anyway, one positive outcome is we are near Chateauneuf du pape.... I feel a wine tasting session coming on.Read more

  • Avignon

    May 26, 2025 in France ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

Well, what a cock up. We travelled over 200 miles to Provence to see Avignon only to discover we had been here two years ago when on our way back from Croatia. We were wandering around the city when Lynn said it seemed familiar. We checked our Google photos, and yes, we were here in June 2023, and neither of us had remembered.

Anyway, we decided to go to Chateauneuf du pape, where my favourite wine is produced. Thought I would get a bargain buying direct from the grower. Think again, the prices were extortionate starting at 45 euros a bottle. £19.99 in Aldi...I'll wait till I get home.

  • Mont Ventoux

    May 27, 2025 in France ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Mont Ventoux is one of the stages of the tour de France and is popular with keen cyclists wanting to take on the challenge. We decided NOT to do it on the ebikes... wise decision as it looked gruelling. We drove up most of the way and then did the last 2000ft on foot, which was quite challenging but very rewarding at the summit. Temperature down bottom of mountain 28c + as you climb its drops to 12c at top and very windy. Lynn found some great alpine plants on the way up.Read more

  • Gorges du Verdon

    May 28, 2025 in France ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We thought we would travel the 100 or so miles to spend some time in the Gorges du Verdon. Following the sat nav, which doesn't know we have a 7.8m caravan in tow, took us up into the mountains and through the gorge on roads we shouldn't really have been on. A bus coming the opposite way nearly took us out on a sharp bend, and a motorcyclist behind the bus nearly ended up on the back seat. Anyway, the gorge was spectacular with a 1000ft drop to my right.
Made it to the camp site in one piece and quickly looked at the route out again. I think we're staying here for a few days to calm down.

  • Route des Cretes

    May 29, 2025 in France ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Morning cycling around the route des crates. Amazing views from the top of the climb and watching a griffon vulture soaring along the cliff face. A long descent back to the village.

  • Rogon

    May 30, 2025 in France ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Cycled up to the village of Rogon about 12 miles from the campsite , along quiet roads with some spectacular views into the valley. What a beautiful place. We booked in at a restaurant for dinner tonight. The ride back took us off road , with some steep rocky climbs. Had to push the bikes up in the heat as well, tough.Read more
