Day 15 - Sri Muda and back to Melbourne

    August 2 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

Visited kehwin (finally) it was good to hang out with him. Florence was away in Canberra on business. The kids were alright.
Then went to Taman to visit Godpa and godma and saw Floyd too. Had such a good meet up with them, we chatted for a couple hours. I miss them and only hope they are always OK, given what they've gone through all their lives.
Then went for prawn mee and apam balek at the standard. Then bought Mangosteens (finally), some fried Cempedak, pisang goreng and crispy apam.
Back to the house to pack, then dinner at kar heong and Pa sent me to the airport. Had a weeeee bit of time before the flight... What to do? Bungkus kaw kaw again last time!

  • Day 14 - KL

    August 1 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Went breakfast at Melur with Pa for roti telur banjir and tosai telur bawang!
Then I went to do my teeth, cut my hair and went to Sri Ganapathi Mess in PJ with Pa. The shop was so unassuming we nearly missed it, but the food and service was superb.
At night went with Mohan to SS2, had sugar cane juice, and mango loh. Was going to do Durian, but gave it a miss. Regret.

  • Day 13 - Kuching and back to KL

    July 31 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

Woke up, auntie and bryan took me to breakfast at Green Hills (I think) kopitiam, the beef noodles was expensive and small portion but it was super tasty.
Then they dropped me off at the Borneo Cultures Museum. I loved all the details of the culture they had in there, stories about their lifestyle, history and more. I learnt about gula apong, and how there is a small salt production enterprise in the highlands as well, which is so bizarre, as there is a salt water spring up there. The tools, the lifestyle and traditions of the people of Borneo are really unique.
Then went to Carpenter Street, and main Bazaar to look for gift for kehli but could not decide on what. Maybe we go together one day and she pick something out. Bought kek lapis for the in laws.
Afterwards went for late lunch of chicken rice and mix roast, then back to the house. Auntie cooked dinner then sent me to airport to go to KL.
Flight to KL delayed so got back to the in laws house at 12 midnight. Pa asked if I had eaten and I hadn't, so I took him for minum at Nasi Lemak Burung Hantu again. Yum.

  • Day 12 - Bako National Park and Kuching

    July 30 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

Woke up very early, and took a Grab to Jetty Kampong Bako to register, buy ticket to the national park and take the boat to Bako HQ.
Lucky the night before auntie and Bryan brought me to get supplies: banana, jackfruit, coconut water, nuts and water for the walk.
You have to share the boat ride with others, so thankfully a Spanish lady was already organising something with her husband, and a French couple and so I just joined her. It was rm200 return trip for the 5 of us.
Got to Bako and after registering at the HQ, walked route 9 which was the longest route, with breakaway paths leading to look outs and beaches. But no swimming allowed.
It was an intense hike that started at 9am and finished at 1pm, almost never stopping except to take photos, eat and drink. At around 11am til the end I came to the area they called Padang, which was open and uncovered. The sun was so hot and it burned. I didn't have any sunscreen, just a cap. In the jungle, the environment was oppressive and you could not stop the sweat from dripping and flowing. Tolerance for discomfort had to be very high.
Saw some periuk kera which was my highlights.
Returned to HQ and caught the boat back to Kampong Bako then grab to Kuching. Had McDonald's (a bit disappointing cos of the stale fries and Bun) then back to auntie's house to rest.
Woke up for dinner, auntie uncle and Bryan took me to the town for seafood and mixed pork porridge (very nice cos of the fresh herbs inside), then we got ice cream gula a pong which is a brown sugar from nipa, then walked the waterfront. I'm so thankful for auntie and the family's accommodation and hospitality.
It was a productive fantastic day, one of the best of the trip.

  • Day 11 - Kuching

    July 29 in Malaysia ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Woke up early to go to klia terminal 2 for flight to kuching.
After dropping bag, had bungkus kaw kaw (Nasi lemak, eggs, toast with kaya and cham ais).
When got to kuching had coffee at McDonald's waiting auntie Nana to fetch. Brian waited in the car at the pick up lanes.
Then we went to have chicken rice at a mall, and went back to their house to nap.
At 8pm auntie and Brian took me out to loklok restaurant, then a drive through kuching city centre. Also had Ayam penyet. It has a very nice and chill vibe. Can probably spend a couple more days exploring kuching.
Then stopped at cityone mall to buy some food supplies for bako adventure next day.

  • Day 10

    July 28 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

Left Penang and since it was on the way, stopped at Taiping to try and get Ayam mee soup for the second time. And it was open!! Second bowl of it tasted even better than the first time which was when I first arrived to taiping. Bought cut papaya and kuih also (the green and white one, and one which is brown crust and light yellow - daddy's favourite but for the life of me dono wat it's called)
Then drove south somemore and might as well stop in Bidor for the duck mee at sin Thean Thean restaurant. Pun chun restaurant is the more popular one, cos they have a couple of shops combined as one, and are more commercialised. But sin Thean Thean is where it's at. I had the last serving for the day and got 2 duck peha! And the konlo mee also nice. Lucky I didn't waste time eating wantan mee in taiping.
Then continue to kl, check in to the hotel, which was super shit, so checked out and go to stay with the in laws.
Returned the rental car, then Mohan took me to ss2 as it was Monday there was Pasar malam.
Bought the crispy apam with nuts, coconut and corn inside. Tried to find in taiping but always closed. Had Hong Kong Chee cheong fun, then Durian (musang king and xo) and coconut water.

  • Day 9 - Penang

Woke up and went to casual market to find Ayam mee soup but was closed 😢so had fish ball ckt again and teh ping.
Then go back to aunties house and pack, then go to Penang. Visited uncle William and uncle Victor. Uncle Victor sisters down from HK.
Their dog very cute. The previous dog gave to uncle Victor parents after their dog passed away. Then they adopted this fella. 15 years old and very well behaved. When want to eat go put the paw next to the bowl.
We talked about a lot things in the 2 hours there, fruits, the family, and other relatives, the klian Pauh house and a lot of other things la.
Left and went to nasi kandar hameediyah recommended by uncles, which apparently is the first ever nasi kandar to open in Penang and it was quite good but very expensive. The basic nasi alone is rm6 then every meat lauk u take is rm18 and even the Cucumber, bendi, everything kira. My meal incl drink came up to rm45.
Then check into Sentral hotel Georgetown, it was clean except for the floor. It was like linoleum and didn't look very clean, or maybe its just old I don't know. So I just wear my slippers inside the whole room including toilet and shower.
Went out to find popiah, Chee cheong fun for dinner. Ended up having lor mee and Chee cheong fun, and tapao popiah. Then had a Durian to finish off. Slept well.

  • Day 6 - Ipoh to Taiping

    July 24 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

In the morning went to a warehouse gym in Ipoh per entry was rm10. Body Alignment Warehouse Gym. It was hot af and the "showers" were buckets in the toilets. But it was such a well equipped gym and large space. It was empty so it was ideal.
Went to nasi Ganja in Ipoh and has 2 pieces of chicken with the rice, then had tau foo fah at funny Mountain.
Drove to taiping and first stop was the graves at Kamunting, then bought udang merah Durian (which I don't it was udang merah as it tasted like Kampung kahwen) and Cempedak for the aunties.

Woke up, went to the gym, then showered and packed for the journey to Ipoh. Before leaving Kuantan, found a spot to have Malay food, the selection was giler power - Nasi Ulam D'Pondok. Had Sambal paru, gulai daging, and Ayam kicap, and a drink for rm21.50.
The journey to Ipoh follows the east coast freeway to north of KL then goes on to the north south highway to Ipoh. I stopped to have eggs and the udang merah, and then reached Bidor a bit late, did not manage to have a duck mee, just a kopi ping and buy some heong piah and tau sar peah for auntie Mary and auntie Fah.
When reached Ipoh I went for chicken rice at Lou Wong, which was so-so. Checked in to French Hotel.

  • Day 5 - Kuantan

    July 22 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Went to gym in the hotel, then went to find nasi Kerabu at Baina Nasi Kerabu, had nasi Kerabu with daging salai, gulai Ayam peha and kopi ais for rm26.
Looked for a secluded beach and found pantai Pelindung, a beach next to teluk Cempedak but on the other side. There was a mural of a giant turtle painted on the rocks by the beach, and where I swam had rocks on both sides, creating an inlet. Had 3 batches of visitors come to take photo of the mural during my 30mins dip. Waves were nice and gave a bit of action.
Afterwards went to a Malay seafood shop (RZ corner) and had siakap tiga rasa. Followed by Durian again at Kak Na, had tembaga this time.
Tapao udang merah (spec from johor, not Penang) for the trip to Ipoh the next day. Among all the Durian I've tried it's probably the best Durian I've had.

  • Day 4 - Kuantan

    July 21 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Breakfast at a Road side warong, had nasi lemak, roti canai and kopi ais. It was lousy.
Left JB in the morning and drove to Kuantan, estimated 4.5 hours but became 5 hours due to no Highway but all old roads, two lanes each direction, and single lanes in some places. Large trucks slowed down the pace a bit, but it was a great drive ; some stretches without any cars at all, some quick overtaking, and some places just cruising behind other cars who were also wanting to just cruise.
There were signs of elephant, tapir and monkeys crossing. Only saw monkeys by the roadside though, and there were lots of them. A bit disappointed when the drive came to an end. But the journey had to end as I reached Kuantan. The journey was through Mersing, Endau (port town kao kao) and Endau River which was massive, Rompin, Pekan then Kuantan.
Went to telok Cempedak, walked the beach stretch, then seafood dinner at Pak Su, ordered sotong petai, kangkung belacan, nestum prawn, and Tofu. For drink, sea coconut of course!
Had musang king and Kampung kahwen Durian after at Kak Na Durian. A bit more expensive but they picked nice fruits for me.
Checked into Swiss Belhotel Kuantan. Nice, clean and spacious room. Definitely recommend.
Bought royal stout and Guinness extra stout (local brewed) but too full to drink.
    It was a good day.
