First Mooring After An Exciting Start

    September 9, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

So after the gang met up at Tesco to do the voyage shop we set sail to new horizons. Feeling a little rushed out of the boatyard, our first manoeuvre a ninety degree turn at a popular mooring spot. Oops! Then after a helping hand from the captain of the boat we nudged and as the junction traffic increased we were on our way or were we? Oops! Somebody's phone had been left in the car so we moored up whilst it was retrieved.

We didn't travel far on our first day, mooring close enough to the Ellesmere boatyard and adjacent cricket ground to hear the bands playing at the Ellesmere Sausage and Cider Festival being held there.

    St Martins Mooring

    September 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

After an early morning walk back to the car to retrieve the right glasses it was another slow day cruising the canal. Lunch turned into Sunday Roast when prices at The Narrowboat on the canal side tempted us in, not to mention some fine beers being on offer.Read more

Llangollen: The End Of The Line

    September 11, 2023 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Bacon butties for breakie before we set off on day 3 on what, with bend upon bend, is becoming a very windy journey. After sourkraut with a very nice dinner of ham, boiled potatoes and sweet corn it may well become a windy journey tomorrow. 😉

Two Aqueducts. Two Tunnels and One & A Half Lifting Bridges today, as well as plenty of lovely scenery and better than expected weather.

No onboard picture could capture the experience of sailing across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct behind a group of canoeists. There are indeed many spectacular pictures of the aqueduct and today we probably became part of a few more as walkers pointed their cameras up from the valley below.

We passed lots of interesting garden art but you'll have to wait for the YouTube movie to see that. Kevin once again steered us on a true and safe course.

    Lolling About In Llangollen.

    September 12, 2023 in Wales ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

So the plan was to have a look around the town and make a start on the return trip late afternoon. Sometimes plans change and so they did and an extra nights mooring was booked.

In the morning we dropped into Llangollen to have a look around the town. After wandering along the main streets, we found ourselves in St Collen's Church. There has been a church on this site since early in the 7th century.

Around lunchtime, we took a break for teas and coffees and scrumptious homemade plain scones served with lemon curd or strawberry jam. We then acquired the following days dinner, three enormous pasties of artisan fayre and a sufficiency of baked beans to accompany them before going our separate ways.

Monica, Ann and Pauline much enjoyed a visit to Plas Newydd historical house, a short way out of town. Alas no photos.
Me, Kev and Ron further separated with Me and Kev dropping Ron off at the barge to take a nap while we took a hike to the end of the canal, Horseshoe Falls and St Martin's Church.

The day finished with the usual G&T aperitifs, Ann's delicious oriental beef dish accompanied by the usual flow of wine and then film night on the DVD player, 'Fisherman's Friends 2'

Although not gloriously sunny, the weather was once again good to us not delivering all the rain the forecast had predicted.

The Leaving of Llangollen for Chirk

    September 13, 2023 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

An early start to the day to try to ensure no oncoming traffic met in the three sections of canal that were just a boat width. I went out a runner, as the early morning mist rose from the canal, to manage any oncoming traffic. The plan worked with just one boat needing to be given way to.

Although we were followed out by two boats, a stop for breakfast paid dividends later. Now, having been overtaken by the two boats, we were able to follow them through tunnels and across Chirk aqueduct before mooring in Chirk for our overnight.

After lunch and a quick vac up, we walked into the village to replenish milk and wine supplies. Ann found a sewing shop, 'Ooh it's open!' . We returned to the boat across the aqueduct with our supplies but on foot this time.

    Chirk to The Narrowboat Inn

    September 14, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Spending most of the day in Chirk with our walking shoes on. Four of us walking the aqueduct again, visiting the castle grounds and walking back through Chirk Tunnel in the dark. Ron and Pauline had a shorter walk but still decent just leaving the castle out.

On the way back to the boat, wine supplies needed to be replenished, they were.

We then set sail, so to speak, for a couple of hours to charge batteries as well make a little progress returning down Marton Locks and mooring close to the Narrowboat Inn.

Sausages and roasted veg for tea with an option of oriental beef .......... also referred to as leftovers.

The Last Ride Back To Ellesmere

    September 15, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

A slow day with not many miles to do and good weather to boot. A short diversion up the Montgomery canal to get rid of rubbish then finally arriving in the Ellesmere Basin but not being allowed into the marina at this time. They were still awaiting two boats. The Dartford Warbler, being their longest boat they didn't want to let us in and so asked us to moor until morning.

Microwave Chinese meals from Tesco sorted us for our evening meal after me and Kev hadn't identifiesd any suitable sit down establishments in Ellesmere.

    Disembarkation Day

    September 16, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

So we come to the end of this watery journey as we look to put our feet back on terra firma once again. It was a very pleasant week in good company on a lovely canal with more than its share of features for its length. Two aqueducts, two tunnels, two lift bridges and two locks, not to mention the many bridges that crossed the canal often on bends and all with narrow channels for us to pass through. All these things dealt with admirably by our captain, Kev, whilst the rest of us enjoyed the ride. The weather being kind to us for the week was an added bonus.

Before we went our separate ways we all enjoyed breakfast in a local cafe, The Corner House, Ellesmere.
