    After finishing school for the year, I dashed home, showered and got an Uber to the airport. We checked in for our flight and went to the lounge. After a short time we boarded our quick flight to Auckland.Read more

    Auckland to Honolulu

    After a quick stop at the lounge in Auckland we boarded our flight to Honolulu. I had an upgrade so got into my premium economy seat and settled in. After dinner I slept all the way to Hawaii.

    Once off the plane. We cleared immigration and customs and caught an Uber to the hotel.Read more

    Honolulu

    We couldn’t check in to the hotel early so we changed clothes and caught the bus to the Ala Moana shopping centre.

    We walked around the shops, buying a few things at Target, Lulu Lemon and the supermarket as well as getting some salad for lunch.

    We caught the bus back to the hotel and checked in, feeling pretty tired by this time.

    We got in the room and sorted ourselves out and had dinner in the room before an early night.    Read more

    Honolulu to Hilo

    After a good night’s sleep I got up and went to the gym. I managed an hour’s work out despite the lack of equipment.

    We then packed up and headed back to the airport for our flight to the Big Island. After checking in and clearing security we found somewhere for breakfast and then waited for our flight.

    Eventually we boarded the Hawaiian Airlines flight to Hilo.

    After landing we picked up our luggage and hire car and headed north. We drove along the scenic coast road and stopped at What’s Shaking for a local fish sandwich.

    We then continued on, eventually finding a supermarket where we did a shop before heading to our accommodation.

    We checked in and made ourselves at home before having dinner on the balcony.    Read more

    Pu’uhonua O Honaunau

    December 20, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

    After a good sleep we got up and had breakfast before driving down the west coast to Pu’uhonua O honaunua National Historic Park. We spent a few hours walking around and looking at the sights.

    We then headed back along a narrow coastal road and stopped for coffee and avocado toast. We continued along the coast road and had a picnic at a coastal park before driving back to Waikoloa.

    In the afternoon we went to the pool and had a swim before having dinner on the balcony.    Read more

    Kailua-Kona

    After a long lie in we had breakfast and drove to Kailua-Kona.

    Parking was a little tricky with the pay parking costing US$43 but we managed to find some free street parking close to the town.

    We spent a few hours looking around the shops but we didn’t buy anything. We then headed to Walmart but there wasn’t a lot in there because of all the Christmas stuff.

    Instead we drove back to Waikoloa village and I bought spam musubi and a pastrami sandwich for lunch.

    In the afternoon I had a nap and in the evening we had dinner in the room.    Read more

    Volcano National Park and Hilo

    December 22, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

    We got up at 4.15am and headed south to volcano. The drive took about 2 hours and we arrived just as it was coming light.

    We watched the sunrise over the crater then drove in the opposite direction. We stopped and walked through a lava tube. We then parked and went for a bigger walk to see another crater overlook.

    Back at the car, we drove through the old lava fields to the coast, having our picnic breakfast along the way.

    Once we left the park we drove to Hilo and found a car park.

    We walked to the farmers market and had an iced coffee and shave ice. We then spent some time looking around the market and shops before driving back to Waikoloa village. We picked up some lunch at the supermarket, which we ate back in the room.    Read more

    North eastern Hawaii

    December 23, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

    I was awoken at 5am by the lawn mowers on the golf course outside my bedroom window.

    After waiting for it to come light, I headed to the gym for an hour. Once back in the room, I had breakfast and a shower before we headed out.

    We drove a little north to a beach but the wind was strong so we decided not to stay. Instead we continued north to a historic park and walked around for an hour looking at the ruins.

    We then headed in land to Waimea and got petrol and some bargains at the supermarket for dinner.

    We drove back to the accommodation and had lunch before relaxing by the pool for a while.    Read more

    Hawaii to Maui

    December 24, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    We got up very early and packed the suitcases and left the accommodation. We then drove an hour and a half over the mountain pass in the rain and dark to Hilo airport. We filled up with petrol and then dropped off the rental car before checking in for our flight.

    We found some coffee and then boarded our flight to Maui. The flight was very quick and we landed in Kahului and picked up a new rental car.

    First we drove north to a cafe in Lahaina where I had a delicious brunch. We then braved the Christmas Eve crowds in the supermarket.

    After stocking up we drove south and pulled in at an ocean view point. Here we saw lots of humpback whales leaping out of the water and watched them for a while. We then drove to our accommodation and checked in and got settled.

    We had dinner in the room.    Read more

    Road to Hana

    December 25, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    We got up early and talked with Pam and David before heading to the north east coast of Maui.

    Our first stop was to watch some surfers. We then stopped at twin falls for a walk before continuing our drive to Hana.

    Along the way we stopped for coffee and banana bread and when we arrived we spent a bit of time at the beach.

    We then slowly made our way back to our accommodation.

    In the afternoon I went in the hot tub and we had pizza for Christmas dinner.    Read more

    Haleakalā

    December 26, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

    We set off after sunrise for a drive up Haleakalā. We drove up the volcano for over an hour and reached over 10,000 feet to look out across the island.

    We called at the visitor centre on the way down and stopped at various lookouts.

    We called at a grove of native bush and spent some time watching some native birds.

    We then continued our drive down the volcano and called at the supermarket for a few bits before returning to the accommodation.    Read more

    Whaler’s Village and whales

    December 27, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

    We had a leisurely start and then headed up to north west coast to whaler’s village. We spent some time looking around the shops and spending too much money in lulu lemon. We then headed south and stopped at the whale look out to watch the humpbacks for a while.

    We then went to the Kehei food trucks and had a burger for lunch before heading back to the accommodation for a relaxing evening.    Read more

    Iao Valley State Monument

    December 28, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

    We got up early and set of to Iao Valley State Monument for our 7.30am reservation. We arrived and set off on the walking trail, which turned out to be about half a kilometre. We managed to look around for about an hour before heading to Mal Ocean Tavern for breakfast and turtle watching.

    After breakfast we decided to explore the south west coast and drove along as far as we could. We then called in at another shopping village and looked around, having some sushi for late lunch.

    Back at the accommodation we spent the evening packing and tidying ready for our departure tomorrow.    Read more

    North to Kauai

    December 29, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

    After finishing packing up we checked out and drove to the airport. We dropped off the rental car and checked in. We then joined a long line for security before eventually finding a surprisingly delicious breakfast at Starbucks.

    We caught our flight to Kauai and then the shuttle bus to the car rental place. Unfortunately they were in a mess and while the check in queue wasn’t long, the wait for a car was over 30 minutes!

    Eventually we got a car and headed north. We stopped at a food truck 🛻 for a falafel sandwich and then at a supermarket for supplies before reaching our hotel in Princeville.

    We checked in and settled in to our room and then went to the local supermarket for some extra items.

    In the evening we relaxed and had dinner in the room.    Read more

    Farmers market and rain

    December 30, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

    We had a slow start and drove down the coast to Coconut place farmers market. After realising it was very expensive we looked around the shops and then went in a grocery store. We bought a few local delights including mochi malasada which were delicious. We then drove to Kīlauea lighthouse reserve and watched the birds for a while.

    We decided to drive down to Hanelei but along the way it started to rain. As we arrived and found a car park, the rain really started so we drove back to the accommodation.

    We spent the rest of the day relaxing and watching the rain.    Read more

    Na’apali Coast

    December 31, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    We were up early for our shuttle reservation for Haena State . We caught the shuttle from across the road from the accommodation at the golf club and it took almost an hour to reach the park.

    On arrival we got a lecture about what to expect and then set out on a trail. The walk was steep and muddy but not too challenging to walk. We walked for about 2.5 hours and then had a big clean off when we got back to the reception area.

    We caught a shuttle back to Hanalei and looked around the shops and had some shave ice before catching another shuttle back to the accommodation.

    I then went for a walk to the supermarket before having lunch.

    After lunch we went to the pool for a while before coming back to wash the muddy clothes.    Read more

    Waimea Canyon

    January 1 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

    Another early start and this time we drove south heading for Waimea Canyon. After a couple of hours driving we arrived and stopped at a few lookouts.

    We then drove back down to the coast and stopped at a food truck for breakfast.

    Next stop was target and then Walmart to pick up a few bits.

    On the way back we continued north past Princeville but it started to pour with rain. We turned around and called at the supermarket for lunch before relaxing in the afternoon.    Read more

    Around Princeville

    We woke to a wet day. We drove along the road to Hā’ena State Park and slowly made our way back. We stopped at the supermarket and picked up lunch and then relaxed for the rest of the day. In the afternoon I went to the gym.Read more

    Kauai to O’ahu

    January 3 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

    We packed up and checked out and then spent about an hour watching the birds. We then continued south stopping for breakfast at a food truck.

    We returned the car and checked in for our flight and found a sandwich for lunch.

    Our flight left on time and we picked up the next rental car in Honolulu. We then set of north and stopped at a supermarket to stock up for the next few days.

    We continued driving around the island until we reached Turtle Bay where we checked in to our accommodation.    Read more

    Haleiwa

    It was a rainy morning but we drove to Haleiwa and found a cafe for a breakfast burrito. We then spent some time looking around the shops before returning to the accommodation.

    In the afternoon we went for a walk around Turtle Bay and the golf course and later we went for a drive along the coast.Read more

    Turtle Bay walks

    January 5 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

    We had breakfast at a bakery but it wasn’t good. We then came back to the accommodation and went for a longer walk along the coast. After a couple of hours we got home and drove to the north shore food trucks where I had a yummy shrimp salad.

    We spent the afternoon relaxing and packing.    Read more

    Turtle Bay to Waikiki

    January 6 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

    After packing up we headed south along the coast and called at a few shops along the way to do some last minute jobs.

    We dropped the rental car off at the airport and then caught the bus to Waikiki. We checked in to our hotel and settled into the room. A proper hotel at last!

    We then went for a walk and found lunch. Back at the hotel we changed into our swimming things and went for a swim at Waikiki Beach.

    We had evening drinks on the balcony before going to Duke’s for salad bar dinner.    Read more

    Diamond Head and Waikiki

    January 7 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

    We were up very early and caught the bus to Diamond Head. We walked up to the tunnel and waited for it to open at 6am.

    We then continued to walk up to the crater and found a place to wait for sunrise, along with everyone else.

    After sunrise we walked back down and caught the bus back to Waikiki. We went in the hotel for buffet breakfast before going back to the room for showers.

    We then went for a walk around the shops and along the beach.

    Back at the hotel we changed into our swimming things and had an ocean swim and sat in the sun for a while.

    Later we went for ramen for lunch and then did some packing.

    In the evening we had drinks and salad bar for dinner.    Read more
