A few days on the Heysen Trail

Two years ago, I met the gorgeous Aneeta as she was hiking the full 1200km Heysen Trail ...solo and carrying all her gear!
I was in awe and loved talking to her about this incredible adventure.
Aneeta is back on the trail and invited me to join her.

    Drive to Hallett

    August 7, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

A couple of hours driving brought me to the designated pick up location (the place name is Booberowie!) to collect Aneeta from the Heysen Trail.
We had some sketchy dirt roads to navigate then we walked up to the infamous 'whistling trig' where we surprisingly found nothing but blue skies and sunshine!
We drove on to Hallett where we enjoyed a coffee and lots of snuggles with 2 beautiful corgis at the roadhouse.
We spent the night at the old train station (available free of charge for Heysen walkers) where we were toasty warm with a fire blazing.

  • Mt Bryan East

    August 8, 2025 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

With my 35kg 'daypack' absolutely bulging with gear, including a 2 person tent (we don't own a single) and a total weight of 14kg, we set off.
It was a fabulous climb up Mt Bryan (936metres) with clear skies and spectacular views. This climb was followed by a steep rocky descent down the other side.
The old school house was our sleeping hut for the night and we spent the rest of the afternoon soaking up some sun.
We had another lovely fireplace and enjoyed chatting before heading to bed for an early night (there is no power in these huts).

  • Caroona Creek Campsite

    August 9, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

A spectacular walk through the Tourillie Gorge and Caroona Creek Conservation Park.
We were able to set up our tents in the small covered shelter -some rain was forecast but never arrived.
Another night of wonderful conversation by our cosy outdoor fire.

  • Black Jack Hut

    August 10, 2025 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Another great day of hiking, continuing through the conservation park towards Black Jack Hut. This hut was donated to Friends of the Heysen by the Urrbrae Wetlands and has been set up brilliantly for hikers.
Another walker arrived an hour after us and she was delighted to see us - she had started at the Northern Trailhead and this was the first time she had company at a campsite!
We were treated to an incredible sunset, full moon and campfire.

  • Back to Hallett and on to Burra

    August 11, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

I packed up my gear and walked up the track, to the designated pick up point (a pin dropped on Google Maps, pretty much in the middle of nowhere!)
Rudi and his colleague were driving across to Ceduna for work and they kindly agreed to join the adventure by driving in to collect me and drop me back at my car in Hallett.
Rudi was surprised by the state of the track in and said that if it had rained it would not have been possible 🙃
After my drop off, I ducked into the Hallett cafe for a delicious egg and bacon roll and bought some mulberry jam.
At 1 pm, I drove in to collect Aneeta off the trail (thankfully this road was easy driving) and we checked in to our lovely accommodation at Paxton Square Cottages in Burra.
We had a few hours to shower, clean up, relax and read in the sunshine.
We enjoyed a 'non dehydrated camp meal' at the local pub (schnitzel & veg for me) and walked back to our cottages to enjoy a good night's sleep in a real bed....such luxury to have power and a reading light too!
