• Flores and Tikal

    Next stop on my trip through Guatemala was the island of Flores which is surrounded by the third biggest lake in Guatemala called Peten Itza. For many, the main reason to visit Flores is because of Tikal the most famous Mayan ruins in Guatemala. But the city itself is a wonder — dense with colonial, red-roofed buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, a historic church and Spanish plaza, and restaurants that are easy to stumble upon walking the city's charming streets. That is also the reason why I stayed in Flores almost 4 days, not only to enjoy Tikal but also the other surroundings.
    On the second day I visited Tikal which is Guatemala’s most popular tourist attraction. Located deep in the jungle in the country’s Peten region, Tikal was the most prosperous city of the Mayan Classic Period, and the beating heart of the Mayan empire. Tikal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and its jungle towering pyramids draws visitors from all over the world there everyday.
