• Polonnaruwa - exploring the anchient cit

    5.–9. mar., Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Today we decided to do a day trip to Polonnaruwa, which is an anchient city just 1 hours away Sirigiya. Farrah had done the research that you cannot explore the city by foot so we decided to do everything with a personal Tuk Tuk Driver, which was a great idea.
On the way to Polonnaruwa we passed one of Sri Lankas Minneriya National Park which is the habitat of alot of Sri Lankan Elephants.
We were even lucky enough to see some Elephants in the wild. They were so cute! One of them even took a bath in the lake. Loved this experience and we saw them even without doing a Safari.

Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century.

We saw so many amazing stone formations, statues, monuments and Buddha statues.
Overall it was very interesting but the day was also really exhausting because it was 33 degrees and there was not always shade. Before each temple we even had to take our shoes off and walking bare foot on the hot stone was definitely a challenge.
Luckily we had some time to relax at lunch. We also saw some other elephants and monkeys driving back to the appartement. This will definitely be a day I will remember.
Now off to the last day as a team of three. 🥲
