On the last day in Sigiriya and the last day with our brother we decided to take it slower, relax at the pool until the afternoon and then go to Pidurangala rock to watch the Sunrise! Before the hike we looked at some other anchient ruins because they were on the way and then our Tuk Tuk dropped us Off at the Trail head.
We definitely didnt expect the hike to be so challenging.. we had to climb, walk through rock crevices and were sweating again alot. But the hike up was so worth it and we saw a Beautiful Sunset. Unfortunately there were alot of Monkeys that wanted to steal food and were quite aggressive. Farrah has some Cookies on the side of her backpack which the Monkeys spotted so they followed us for a while and stole the Cookies.
The way down Pidurangala was equally challenging as going up since there were so many people waiting in line but After 45 min we were able to get down.
After this hike we ended the Night with some chicken wraps, Beers and a Cocktail! Good last Night to celebrate!
Now off to the Beach for Farrah and me to learn how to Kitesurf and Lorenzo leaves for the Airport.Okumaya devam et
Today we decided to do a day trip to Polonnaruwa, which is an anchient city just 1 hours away Sirigiya. Farrah had done the research that you cannot explore the city by foot so we decided to do everything with a personal Tuk Tuk Driver, which was a great idea.
On the way to Polonnaruwa we passed one of Sri Lankas Minneriya National Park which is the habitat of alot of Sri Lankan Elephants.
We were even lucky enough to see some Elephants in the wild. They were so cute! One of them even took a bath in the lake. Loved this experience and we saw them even without doing a Safari.
Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century.
We saw so many amazing stone formations, statues, monuments and Buddha statues.
Overall it was very interesting but the day was also really exhausting because it was 33 degrees and there was not always shade. Before each temple we even had to take our shoes off and walking bare foot on the hot stone was definitely a challenge.
Luckily we had some time to relax at lunch. We also saw some other elephants and monkeys driving back to the appartement. This will definitely be a day I will remember.
Now off to the last day as a team of three. 🥲Okumaya devam et
The Next day I felt so much better, we had a very nice breakfast on our balcony and went with a private driver all the way to the starting point of the Adam‘s Peak. So it was a whole day of traveling. When we arrived in the evening we only had an early dinner and went to bed around 9:30 pm since we had to get up again at 1:30 am to start hiking.
And we sure started the hike just before 2 am. There weren‘t alot of foreigners on the hike, we most saw Sri Lankan people that were probably were up at 12:00 am and now slowely made their way down again.
In the middle of Sri Lanka stands this holy mountain the Adam’s Peak. On this mountain all religions seem to come together: according to Christians and Muslims this is the place where Adam took his first step on earth, the Buddhists believe Buddha’s first footstep was set here and for the Hindus, it was Shiva who stepped via this peak on earth. All in all a very holy place and therefore a huge pilgrimage site. Apparently sometimes the line to reach the peak can be so long that people have to wait 4 hours until they reach the top (especially this happens on holidays and on the weekend)
We made it to the top in just under 3 hours which is really good, when you think about 5500 stairs leading up to the peak. On top of the peak everyone has to take their shoes off to enter the temple where you can see the footprint in gold. Photos were not allowed since it is a holy place. However we were now able to ring a big bell once because we made it one time to the top! Apparently some people made it to the top 16 times and can ring the bell that often wow!
What I found very astonishing was that you could find all different people on the track, grandmothers, fathers with their children, babies, moms, sisters, monks, people walking with sneakers, mostly flip flops or just bare foot. Some even carrying lots of offerings for the gods up. I think for the people here in Sri Lanka the peak is not the goal its all about the way to get there - making multiple stops in between, sometimes even sleeping, spending time with the Family and just enjoying the walk.
But I bet everyone is relieved when they reach the top! So happy I was able to experience this with my sister and brother :)
Since we made it to the top so early at around 4:45 am we had to wait almost 1,5 hours for the sunrise.
So we changed our clothes (they were really wet from the hike getting up to the peak) and then had some bananas and just rested.
At around 6:00 am we then got experience the sunrise which was really nice. A Little crowdy but still beautiful. Overall it was a great experience and made me feel stronger again (even though i can still tell i‘m a little sick).
At around 6:30 we made our way back and were back at the hostel at around 9:30 in just under 3 hours.
After this long and tiring hike we had pancakes for breakfast which i really enjoyed, our driver picked us up and we started our long way all the way north to Sirigiya which will be our last stop for 4 nights before Lorenzo flies back to Germany and Farrah and I go kitesurfing on the west coast :) really excited for the last days!Okumaya devam et
Welcome to Kandy!
On the way from Ella to Kandy.. what we expected.. one of the most scenic train rides in the world. What we got.. rain all day long…
But this did not take away from some beautiful scenery on the way to Kandy. The train unfortunately was so much delayed that we arrived 8 hours later instead of 5 and the only thing we did that day was arrive at our appartement in Kandy and had dinner close by.
Yesterday was however a nice day! We reunited with our sister who will join me for the next two weeks! Its the first time the three of us are traveling together.
We started with a nice Sri Lankan breakfast with the best coconut Roti we had so far and then took a tuktuk to Pick up our sister from the train station.
After we got back to the appartement, got redressed and a little fresh we started a full day City Tour. First stop was the royal botanical garden which was simply beautiful. They had palm tree lanes one after the other, a beautiful orchid house and lots of interesting other plants. Also did you know that the water Lilie is the national plant of Sri Lanka?
Next stop was then the Giant Buddah. And he was ginormous to say the least! We were even able to go on top from which you have a beautiful view over Kandy :) After this we had a nice lunch at the river (First Rice and Curry for my sister) and then made our way to a spice and herbal garden. This was a very unexpected experience. There was a guy that was a herbal doctor and he gave us so many insights about the benefits of herbal medicine. Apparently there is also a medicine that can cure Diabetes (me as a biochemistry Major and working for a pharnaceutical Company clearly is doubting that but I do believe that herbal medicine is good for some diseases). We even received a ayurvedic treatment including a face, head and back massage which was really nice. All for getting ready for the Adams Peak!
After we finished our treatment we went to a Dance Show. We think this Dance Show was a little crazy.. it included lots of drums and lots of weird dancing and even a fire show in the end :D Overall I liked the experience because I was able to share it with my two siblings but it was still a little weird..
The last stop was the Temple of the sacred Tooth! Wow this Place was crowded. I think I have never seen a more crowded place in the last weeks.. so many people, also with flowers which were offerings to the god.
It was nice to experience this once even though we only got a glimpse of what the whole ceremony was all about.
After this we got a quick dinner and headed home. After this long and really active day we went to bed early because tomorrow we have to stay up until 2 am to start hiking the Adams Peak! I Hope my health will make this because I have been feeling a little sick for the last two days - I will definitely rest the whole day today, collect my energy and hopefully it will be better tomorrow.Okumaya devam et
Initially the plan was to start our hike really early in the morning at around 5:30 am to avoid all the crowds.. but unfortunately when we got up we could hear the pouring rain.. it had rained all night so we decided to have a nice breakfast and then start the hike later in the day which was the right thing to do.
First stop was the Nine Arches Bridge. Beautiful scenery and right from a postcard we walked the 30 minutes to the bridge, took some pictures and then decided to also do Ella Rock right after. Luckily it stopped raining.
The first part of the hike to Ella Rock was on train tracks. For us Europeans really crazy since we are always afraid a train will arrive, for the Sri Lankan people however its their normal walk on their daily commute into town.
So we walked around 1 hour down the train tracks until the actual hike started. We passed chili fields, tea plantations and beautiful scenery. It rained a little bit but for the most part it stayed dry until we reached the top of Ella Rock. The last part was definitely the most difficult part of the hike and we were a little exhausted but happy when we finally made it up. In my mind I thought this is just the preparation for Adams Peak in 3 days…
We stayed on top for a little bit and enjoyed the view. Unfortunately on our way back it was pouring rain and we arrived almost fully soaked back in Ella at our accomodation.
We were able to rest and dry for a little bit, changed to warmer and dry clothes and then walked to our cooking class.
I just loved this cooking class which took place in a real outdoor kitchen . The woman explained us everything about the spices and that the main four spices of Sri Lankan kitchens are Pepper, Salt, Chili and Brown Curry powder. If you change the ratio of all of these spices the dishes will taste different.
We made an Aubergine Salad which was to die for, pumpkin Curry, chicken curry, dhal, Rice and Okra. The Food was amazing! We were a group of 10 people from the US, Germany and the Netherlands.
I would highly recommend doing a cooking class in Sri Lanka. We even learned how to prepare rice over the fire and make coconut milk the traditional way.
After we had some time to Rest we are now on the train to Kandy :) Tomorrow we will meet our sister! Can’t wait!Okumaya devam et
We made it to Ella! What we expected: Lush hills with tea plants, cooler weather and a nice little town. What we got - by far the most touristic place of Sri Lanka so far. Its flooded by german and french people at the moment. Luckily however this fact does not take away the beauty of the surroundings. On our first full day (we arrived the day before in the afternoon and just had some Dinner and Drinks) we decided to Go to Lipton’s Seat First. Its usually a very nice spot where you can overlook the whole tea plantation with Green fields. Lipton (some of you might know him from the Lipton tea) was a scottish Business man who wanted to expend the tea industry in Great Britain, knowing that there would be a much higher demand for it in the Future. To this day black teas from this area are called english breakfast and afternoon breakfast teas.
Once we arrived at Lipton‘s Seat we expected a beautiful view (Apparently there is a sign saying its one of the nicest in the world) but we could only see fog - lots and lots of fog.. nothing else..
Luckily we spoke to some Tuk Tuk drivers and they said we have to wait around 20-30 minutes for it to clear up. I did not really believe them. But since we were in the tea region anyways and it took a long way to get there with the train we eventually had some black tea with samosas and waited.
After around 20 minutes - can you believe - we really got to see the view!! And it was really amazing! :) we got soo Lucky! Once we made our way down again and towards a tea factory we then saw that the fog got more and more again. So we actually were able to be on top for a small open window :)
The tea factory was also really interesting! Build in 1890 from Lipton it still runs to this day by the people of Sri Lanka! Planting, harvesting and preparing tea is however hard work.
Can you believe that one tea worker a day only earns 1000 rupis (about 3€) a day for harvesting 20 kg of tea? Crazy!
The tea factory tour started by a tea tasting which I really liked. We were able to try white tea, english breakfast, afternoon breakfast and a even stronger tea. Thats literally how they called it :D I liked all of them.
Harvesting tea and preparing the tea is a multistep process (unfortunately you were not able to take pictures inside the factory):
1. You First Start by harvesting all the Young and fresh leaves on top or the Plants
2. dry them for 14 Hours during dry Season and 18 hours during wet Season
3. then you roll the leaves in a machine
4. the leaves are then cut and sifted 4 times
5. fermented for 2,5 h
6. dried for 20 minutes at 130 degrees
7. then collected and differentiated into smaller, larger and really large pieces (the different sizes make the strongness and quality of the tea)
8. packaged at 60 kg and finally autioned in Colombo
It was very interesting to see especially with all the workers walking barefoot.
After the tea factory we asked a tuk tuk driver for a very authentic place to eat and it was definitely authentic. A little place hidden, but with very nice curry and rice. Lorenzo can still feel the heat of the Curry ;)
We then headed to back to Ella. Initially we wanted to also do Ella rock, but because the train was so delayed and it was raining we Skipped Ella rock and just went home.
I really hope we will have another open window do get to see more.Okumaya devam et
After we spend so many days traveling already.. and not really resting we decided to spend one day at the Beach in Mirissa which was the perfect decision! The Water was so nice and we just enjoyed our time relaxing.
Update on my phone: its still working and it is charging. We got all the Rice out and its now cleaner than before haha
Last Night we then went to get some Sri Lankan mosquito balm and some Lotion for Minor sunburns.
Our acommodation in Mirissa is so nice! We got typical Sri Lankan breakfast from the home owners in the morning (the breakfast is mostly spicey) and we found out that lots of monkeys also call this place home. At one point we saw 10 monkeys.. I guess these guys were keeping us awake at night :D also the house is only 200 m from the beach which makes it very convenient to spend a day there.
Mirissa itself is a really busy place and there is not that much to do besides the beach, but we had a nice dinner last night, got some Sri Lankan Cocktails with Arrack (Sri Lankan rum) at the beach and got to bed fairly early to get some rest before a next traveling day - Off to Ella next :)Okumaya devam et
After one exhausting Trip to Galle we slept very well, got up at 8:00 am, had some breakfast (pancakes and a Sri Lankan Omlett) and headed to the Fort which Galle is known for. Founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese as a fortified town, Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century under Dutch colonial rule. It is the best representation of a fortified city built by the Europeans in South Asia, showing the interaction between European planning principles and South Asian architectural traditions. With almost no shade we strolled along the fort but were astonished of how european this part of Sri Lanka is. Inside the Fort are Shops, Boutiques, jewelry Stores and Restaurants. Really cute!
After spending around 2 hours in the boiling heat at the fort we made our way back to the „Hotel“, grabed our stuff and took an tuktuk to Galle train Station.
We then took the train to Weligama, which is the next stop on the way to Mirissa and one of the many beach towns along the South coast.
Of course we headed to the beach and it was great! The ocean is so warm and there are perfect conditions to do some surfing. Luckily we also found a spot that offered food. So had again some Sri Lankan Curry and some Kottu :)
After spending almost 3h at the Beach we headed back to the train station to get to Mirissa.
I really do like the train rides here because the people are really nice. Lots of them offer their help. They sometimes look a little surprised when you as a Tourist also take the third class train (not a Lot of tourists Go on the third Class) but often times you are rewarded by a huge smile!
In Mirissa we finally had a shower and went to the beach to have some freshly caught grilled fish! The Fish was soo good. We picked a white snapper right from the beach. Definitely will dream of this Fish for a while haha
At the beach they even had some fireworks and live music :) made me appreciate life once again!
Unfortunately on the way home Lorenzo and I were hit by a Wave and my phone got wet.. so we had to do an emergency rice dipping over Night. It worked.. But the Rice got stuck and I wasnt able to charge my phone. 🤦🏼♀️
After we performed an Operation on my phone this morning I hope it will work again.. Updates to follow 😅Okumaya devam et
After not traveling for a while and only going on small trips to Paris and Boston, i‘m back now with a 3 week trip around Sri Lanka.
I initially wanted to do another trip alone - but when my brother also did not have anything planned yet it just aligned and we decided to do a trip together. He actually suggested Sri Lanka which i‘m really happy about. :)
Our trip started by flying about 5 hours to Doha, Quatar. Once we were able to find each other in this massive transit Area of the Quatar Airport I was stunned by the cleaness and openess of the Airport. There is even a Garden where you can sleep and walk in.
The second Flight took around 5 hours as well, where Lorenzo and I tried to sleep.
After we arrived in Colombo, Sri Lanka we got a data plan, figured out the easiest way to the central Station downtown and took an Uber there.
What a Ride I have to say… luckily we suvived the crazy ride and ended up in the market district of Colombo Pettah.
Sooo many people, so much for your senses, so many different things to buy. I bet you can get everyting there.
Since we were so exhausted and the temperature was 30 degrees and the humditity was over 90 we decided to only walked through the market. We wanted to get to the central Station as quickly as possible. On the way we stopped at a typical Sri Lankan Cafe and had a Coffee, some tea and Sprite for hydration and Sugar. Definitely felt the First time connecting with some locals.
We then took the train to Galle. What we forgot was that we still had to wait another 3 Hours until it arrived.. Lots of waiting…
But we eventually Managed to find the right train (After we had to Jump out of a different one because it was not the right one 😅) and squished into the small corridor with 80% Sri lankans and 20% Tourists. Also Met again so many Germans. :D
For the first time in a while I felt like a Fish in a can. I definitely remember this from the Busses in Guatemala :D
After a 2h train Ride and about 1 h Delay we finally arrived at our First destination in Galle.
After such a long trip, being awake for more than 24h we could only get some Food in the end and had a celebration beer.
In the end we managed to arrive at our hostel in Galle after almost exactly 24h taking a Bus, airplane, Uber, walking, train and a tuktuk.
Now sleep and more of Galle and the Fort Tomorrow :)Okumaya devam et
