Girona an old city, not far from Barcelona that included a castle and a wall. Much of the wall still exist today, and the city has made it accessible with foot paths and bridges all along the wall. It was pretty warm but walking the wall was really cool.

The views from the castle were great, which isn’t surprising, considering that castles are strategically located on the top of the hill to watch out for bad guys. But in this case, there weren’t any bad guys in sight, but it was really fun to peek over the wall and see into the private lives of the locals.

Girona is frequently used as a set piece for movies. Several scenes in Game of Thrones were shot here and even today during our visit they were filming something or other. That was really a large crew trucks all over the place and lots and lots of extras. Of course it was all blocked off, and I didn’t see anybody famous.

  • Sagrada Famila, a different Bacillica

    9. juni, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

I was not excited about going to another big church in another city. I've visited many huge, monumental churches, on 4 continents and they all start to blend together. Big stone walls high ceilings, towers that dominated the city sky. The artwork of stone statues, historicall painting, gilding make a feeling that I'm small in the universe.

Here, the inside is clean, almost no art and filled with light from the sun through the stained glass. The columns stretch up into this dapelled light like a forest tree canopy.

The outside is where the statuary and the biblical stories are told. 18 Huge towers (4 under construction) and 3 facades (1 under construction) tell the stories of the life and death of Jesus.

I found myself amazed by the architecture, engineering and construction technology used to build this church. Much more so than can be presented here.

  • Sagrada Família

    9. juni, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Gaudis incredibly famous basilica. It’s so famous that the day after our visit, Pope Leo is also visiting. Which is really cool because the pope was our neighbor back in Rome so now we think he might be taking our travel ideas and making them his own. You don’t know how he is just a copycat.

There’s a lot written about the sagrada and it’s architect, but most of that focuses on the uniqueness of the decorations on the outside what we found most surprising was the Engineering that we went into the building itself. Gaudi was an incredibly gifted structural engineer. Considering that he did a lot of the design work between 1910 and his death in 1926 without the aid of computers he really had to be creative.

One of the most telling techniques that he used was building structures at small scale and hanging weights from the structure. Once he got the structure as light as it could and still hold up the weight he was set. Smartly, he then inverted the hanging system, which would then create a column and roof system that would hold up. Or actually down in this case.

The inside of the Basilica is incredibly bright. On one side is the nativity. The light there is all blue and green, the stained glass, creating beautiful design designs on the floor. The other side is the passion side. They are all the stain glasses, red and fiery. The result in color inside the basilica is a vocative of flame and heat.

And incredibly inventive way visually representing the two parts of the Bible from the nativity to the death

  • Goodbye Barcelona

    10. juni, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

What a quick month that was. The first city in a long time that we both thought we would return. A city where all the time we turned a corner and thought “oh! I’ve never been here before”.

I think our standout were food options. There was every type of food that you could imagine one of our last meals was German Wurst. And we ate it while sitting on an outdoor sidewalk Cafe in the beautiful sunshine on yet another corner we had never seen.

I even found a Mexican restaurant that did a good burrito. I had Thai food and of course paella.

It was a bit warm, but I’m not sure if that was a product of our apartment as we didn’t get any clear breezes through it due to its position facing a courtyard but perhaps given the right location even the heat would not have been so oppressive

During the time we were there, it also rained and hailed, it was in the 90s and it was 85% humidity so it would seem that during our month, I think we got all the seasons that Barcelona had to offer.

And result a lovely visit for a month but I don’t think I’d move there permanently.
