    NB Day 6: Honningsvåg … A-Wander

    By the time we were ready to continue with our plans for the day, the rain had stopped. The sun was even shining. However, there was a wicked cold wind blowing, that negated any warmth from the sun. Bundled up, we persevered.

    Leaving the Norddkappmuseet, we began our stroll around the city, following one street toward the church and another one on the way back to the ship.

    Our route gave us a chance to see some of the places we weren’t able to get to in 2019. The church, for example, was locked up tight then, but we were able to go in today to view the interior.

    The church is the only building that was left standing following the Nazi’s scorched-earth withdrawal in 1945. A sign nearby explained that built in 1885, Honningsvåg Kirke is the oldest building on Magerøya.

    The sign went on to explain … “When the reconstruction of Finnmark began, the government wanted to move Honningsvåg to the mainland. But determined residents fought to rebuild their town in its original location. People returned and set up camp in the church. A bakery was established, pews doubled as beds, and with the church as their home, this heroic group began building a new Honningsvåg. The church stands as a symbol of faith, home, community and determination.”

    I mentioned in the previous footprint that there was a wicked cold wind blowing in the city today. We felt its effects even more at the church, which is a high point in Honningsvåg. So, we turned around from there, heading towards the waterfront. While Mui went to a nearby supermarket to pick up some snacks, I walked to a pier on the far side of the harbor to click a couple of photos of our ship without any distractions in front of it.

    As we slowly strolled along the nearly-deserted streets, we came across sculptures that we didn’t recall from 2019 … and a couple of pieces of ‘trash-art’ made using debris collected from the beaches. I’ve uploaded the description of the “Global Challenges” project that these works are a part of, so I won’t repeat the information here.

    I’m glad we opted to stay local and enjoy the quiet city with some unexpected pops of color along the way.    Read more
