    Cathedral cove / Hot water beach

    After some hours at the beautiful beach of Pauanui we drove one hour up north to see the Cathedral cove nearby Hahei. It‘s a big arch at sea level. Quite nice place which can be reached after a 30 min. walk. Afterwards we drove a few km south to hot water beach. With the rented shouvel we started to dig in the sandy beach nearby the water-line. Just a few cm below the surface hot water appeared. After a while the private Jaccuzzi was built and ready to relax (ca. 40C).Leggi altro

    Tongariro Alpine Crossing

    Today 06:30 we were picked up for a 20min. bus ride to the starting point of the Tongariro hike. It was freezing cold when we started to walk down the valley before entering the volcanic mountains. What we then saw after reaching the edge of the Tongariro cannot be written in words. It was my day so far on the Northern Island. Aussumn landscape, weather, clear view, blue lakes, Volcanos, smelling air and just pure Nature!
    After 6 hours and 20km hiking we reached the end of the hike.
    Maybe a bit crazy to drive 160km down to the west coast the same day with the Campervan right after. The energy received from that day drove me down....    Leggi altro

    Whanganui - Wellington

    Very early walk at the beach yesterday morning in Whanganui. Nice black volcanic sand and an exceptional clear view to Mount Taranaki across 150km!
    We left Whanganui in the morning and drove 4 hours straight down to Wellington in the very south of the North Island. Not much to see in between.
    Today spending the day in Wellington and celebrating Marc‘s 14th birthday 🎂.
    In the late evening we will take the Ferry ⛴ to Picton (South island).    Leggi altro

    A day in Wellington

    Nice early morning walk off the Camping site. Another beautiful and sunny day! We enjoyed the city of Wellington for the day. First we went up to Mt. Victoria which offered a great view around the city. A visit to the Museum of New Zealand 🇳🇿 gave us quite some history about the country and it’s native habitants (Maori).
    In the evening we took the Ferry ⛴ to the southern Island of 🇳🇿 where we arrived at Midnight 🙈.    Leggi altro

    Picton to Kaiteriteri

    After a quite short night we left Picton for a three hour drive to Kaiteriteri which is just at the beginning of the famous National park Abel Tasman. A beautiful ride which at some points reminded me to the Jura and the Engadin. On the road we also passed by many vineries 🍷 . Kaiteriteri is a little village with a nice camping ground right off the beach. As holiday started in New Zealand it is now packed with Kiwis 🥝. The good side: Children are for free at camping ⛺️ and adventures during holiday 👍. Happy I still had some beers left as you cannot buy any alcohol on good Friday in 🇳🇿.Leggi altro

    National park - Abel Tasman

    In the morning we boarded the water taxi which brought us in a two hour ride up to Awaroa bay in the middle of the National park Abel Tasman. Today I thought a few times being in the Carribean... Beautiful beaches and bush walks. Another high-light of the vacation!
    Today early bed-time as the kids and I want to watch SCB live becoming Swiss champion one more time (the game starts 05:45 a.m.). Thank you for having a good internet connection in the camping. Hopp SCB 👍    Leggi altro

    Kaiteriteri - Greymouth | Paparoa Nation

    After breakfast we left Kaiteriteri and Abel Tasman for a five hours drive to the west coast. First rain during the day since we came!
    Already before getting to the west coast the weather cleared up again. The west coast with it‘s rough sea is just as beautiful as the Carrebean like Abel Tasman. At Paparoa National park we went to see the Pancake rocks with it’s famous blowholes. Beautiful! Finally we drove down to Greymouth and parked the Campervan just 100m off the big waves of Tasman sea 🌊. Beautiful to hear the strong sound of the breaking waves at the beach in bed.Leggi altro

    From West to East

    Spent some beautiful moments early in the morning at the beach with a fantastic view to Mt. Cook (highest mountain in NZL).
    Afterwards we hit the road to visit a Kiwi center in Hokitika which is a little town just south of Greymouth. At noon long discussions about where to go. My favorite to take a 5 hours drive down south to Wanaka did not meet thumb-up level with the others. So we drove over Arthur‘s pass to Waipara just north of Christchurch on the east cost. In the end we spent even a bit more than 5 hours in the car by that option... Spent the night in a small camp out in the „pampa“. The owner must be a railway fan. He has setup the whole camp with some railway relicts. Met a German singer and songwriter at BBQ and an English couple who shared some wine with us.Leggi altro

    Kaikoura

    Wake-up call early in the morning for a 1.5 hours drive to Kaikoura. Nice little town at the beach which is well known for its seafood 🦞 and whale 🐳 watching excursions. Unfortunately the whales had been out of the operated section in the morning hours 🙈. Marc and I planned something different anyway. We went for a walk along the beautiful Kaikouri peninsula where we had seen many fur seals including babies together with their mothers just a few meters away from us. Afterwards I went for lunch together with Marc. I tried green lipped mussels for the first time. It was very delicious 😋! At two o‘clock already at a camp ground in Kaikoura with a good Pinot Gris from Marlborough, New Zealand 🇳🇿.Leggi altro

    Kaikoura - Akaroa

    On our second last day in NZL we left Kaikoura in the morning for a nice drive to Christchurch. For the moment we bypassed Christchurch and followed the road to the outer end of the Peninsula out of CC until we reached the touristic village of Akaroa. Nice little town with lots of shops and even a boucher where we bought our last BBQ 🍖 for the evening. Looking at the surroundings of Akaora you could imagine being in Meggen or elsewhere at Lake Lucerne. Quite similar scenery but with no higher alps behind. Spent the night at a camping ground above Akaora with a nice view across the harbour and town.Leggi altro

    Christchurch

    24 aprile 2019, Nuova Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

    Early in the morning we had to get our campervan ready for return later that day. With all our luggage 🧳 quite a task 🙈🤠. Soon after we left for a 90 minutes drive into downtown of Christchurch. On our route to downtown we passed the Mosque of the terrible shooting some weeks ago. Still thousands of flowers and heavily armed police around 😢.
    The city was very quiet because of a public holiday. We walked around for some hours before heading to the airport. Christchurch is quite need with nice places, large green parks and little streets with lots of small shops. The impact of the last earthquake (2011) can still be seen at many places.
    In the afternoon we dropped off our campervan and visited the Antarctic center which was just 2 mins. away from our hotel at the airport. Early night because the alarm-clock will ring 03:30 🕞 🙈.    Leggi altro

    Back in Sydney after 28 years

    First action: Change clothes, 28 degrees today!
    Sydney is such a cool city. 28 years ago the sky tower was about the tallest building. Today it almost dissapears between all the new buildings nearby the waterfront (including one of the fanciest building from Credit Suisse).
    The Holiday Inn Hotel 🏨 at the Rocks in Old Sydney is just aussumn! Every place in downtown is within walking distance. From the room I can see the whole skyline and at the roof top we have a spectacular 360 degree view including the Sydney Opera house and all of this from the outdoor pool 🏊‍♀️ 👍.    Leggi altro

    Sydney

    Spent the whole day in Sydney downtown. Using a bus tour to get to the spots we wanted to go in the first half of the day. After long we visited the Sea Life Sydney again with the kids. My favorite still remains the New England Aquarium in Boston. In the afternoon we seperated and everyone followed their personal interest. Woman went shopping, I walked the city and Marc chilled in the Hotel room 🤠.
    In the evening we met Norbert and Tammy for a Thai dinner in downtown. They relocated back to Sydney in 2017 after living in Zurich for 17 years. Interesting discussions about Sydney. It changed so much over the last decades! It became really big and it got spoiled by Asian tourists and immigrants. The harbor bridge and the Opera house are atill the same. That is about it! But it‘s still a nice city with many places to go.    Leggi altro

    Another day in Sydney

    Today we enjoyed breakfast for the second time in a little french restaurant just around the corner from the Hotel. Afterwards we went to a ride on a Catamaran in Sydney harbor. It brought us to Sydney Torangi zoo where we spent a couple of hours. We learned a lot about all the Australian animals but now we look forward to see them in pure nature soon. Ok, I don‘t mind if we don‘t meet a salty soon at the beach north of Cairns...

    Travelling from Sydney to Cairns

    After another beautiful jogging 🏃 round shortly after sunrise and a last visit to our favorite french Cafe „la Renaissance“ at the rocks it was time to get ready for the next travel to Cairns. Thanks to Uber which brought us to the Airport at 40% of the cost of the regular cab service... Enjoyed an ontime flight with unlimited free Wifi during the entire flight! Thanks to Virgin Australia 🇦🇺. After check-in in the Hotel we had dinner at the Esplanade in Cairns. Fiona shared a Crocodile 🐊 steak with Mama. The extra sharp steak nife was really necessary to cut this tough meat into pieces 🤠.Leggi altro
