  • Memorial Day

    May 28, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

After the loop we ride our bikes to Freeman Park where there is a ‘Field of Honor’ and an event for Memorial Day. On our way in Stew asked a guy on his bike (Dan Shirley) if we were going the right way and another chance meeting leads to a memorable afternoon and evening.
We walk through the flags representing local military personnel who lost their lives in war, it is very moving. Good to hear the pipes and drums of the Teton and District Pipe Band and see some Scottish dancing.
Finished off the afternoon with a pint of Caber Toss a Scottish style ale at the Tap-n-Fill as recommended by the Shirley family (Dan, Janice, Elise, Josh & Austin) who we joined on the patio.

  • Shirley House BBQ

    May 28, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Funny how things work out, if we hadn’t had a couple of problems, we’d never have been in Idaho Falls this Memorial Day and we’d never have met the lovely Shirley family, who kindly invited us to their house for a BBQ.
They live in the foothills to the east of the city with great views. Dan and Janice made us feel very welcome and we had a wonderful evening chatting with their family and friends. Great food and the odd drink or few. Stew and Dan also had a common interest..... Malt Whisky 🥃.

  • Tourist Park - Idaho Falls

    June 2, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Parked on the banks of the Snake River which is in flood. We’re waiting on the 3rd controller for the step to be delivered, the first 2 were faulty and closed the step whenever the door closed. Fingers crossed 🤞 the third one will be good.
Lots of interesting birds and we have Canada geese families in our back garden. Saw an osprey nest with 2 chicks on our bike ride along the river today.

Back at Dan and Janice’s house for dinner on their deck overlooking the city of Idaho Falls. Also joining the party were their friends John and Anne. Interesting people John originally from Mississippi met Anne originally from Dublin in Germany. Excellent food and company, shame we took photos after all the plates were cleared !! Great sunset over the city tonight.Read more

  • Old Oregon Trail - Massacre Rocks SP, ID

    June 6, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Hiked from the rest area on I86 along a trail which went under the interstate to Trail Ruts of the pioneers who travelled across the US to Oregon and California. You needed an imagination to see the ruts, however the spring wild flowers were amazing as were the views over the Snake River.Read more

  • The Narrows RV Park, OR

    June 8, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

The Narrows RV Park is named for the strip of land it sits on between 3 lakes, Mud, Malheur and Harney. Reality is the lack of snow over the winter means that the small Mud Lake is dry and the other 2 cannot be seen from the road. Perhaps that’s why the RV park is almost empty, however the birds here are superb, spuggies (house sparrows), California quail, swallows, brown cowbirds, orange and yellow bullocks orioles to name a few. Also have chipmunks and rabbits running round the coach.Read more

  • Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, OR

    June 10, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

First stop was the visitor centre bird feeders were mobbed by yellow headed blackbirds, with the odd redwing blackbird thrown in. Gophers and ground squirrels were running round. Highlight was spotting a couple of baby great horned owls in a huge cottonwood, one of the adults was keeping a eye on them from a nearby tree. Great museum with stuffed birds and animals and eggs and nests.Read more

  • Malheur NWR Auto Tour

    June 10, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Following the Blitzen River Valley on a gravel road we see dry marshes and some ponds with ducks, the cinnamon teal was a new and exciting spot. Killdeer were nesting in the gravel on the side of the road, Stew found a nest. Night hawk sitting on a fence. Mule deer watched us drive by. Did not venture out of the car as mosquitoes were everywhere, still they’re good bird food.Read more

Booked in for a few days, US Open and England’s first World Cup match are on the agenda. Lovely surprise to have a visit from our friends Herb and Emmy Lou who we first met in 2003 at a Discovery Rally in Rayne, LA. They are looking great and are our inspiration to live life on the road. They’ve been full timing for 20 years and Herb will be 88 this year - still biking and hiking, what a great couple !!!Read more

  • Woahink Lake, OR

    June 20, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

First outing for our new toys.... lightweight Yak rafts by Alpacka from Colorado. We chose our colours, they made them and shipped them to us. They roll up so small and we had a great time setting them up, Carol is holding the inflation bag, fill it up twist the top and squeeze it in, it only takes a few minutes. First lake trial was a great success.Read more

  • Haceta Lighthouse, OR

    June 21, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Short hike up to the lighthouse from the beach and trails that go further through the forest at the top of the cliffs. Seabirds, cormorants and gulls are nesting on the sea stacks, the smell is unmistakable and reminds us of the Angus Cliffs. After a cuppa on the beach we go beach coming and the rocks and pools are full of life. At a turnout on the way back we saw stellar sea lions and a whale (not sure what kind) blowing in the sea below us. Great day out for what started as a drizzly day.Read more
