Volcán Arenal y La Fortuna

During my one week break, I took a trip up to Arenal Volcano and the town of La Fortuna. It was amazing! The place I stayed had three thermal hot spring pools to soak in - which I did every day. Even in the hot sun, it was relaxing and not really that hot. They say it is really good for your health. I would say so - especially mental health.

This area is really green unlike San Joaquin de Flores right now. My first full day I had planned to take a guided birding trip. I got my behind out of bed at 4:50am to catch a cab at 5:30 for the 6am tour. I got to the reserve, and it was raining buckets. Not an ideal scenario for seeing birds or being comfortable. I chatted with the guide and was able to reschedule the trip for Sunday morning before my mini-van took me back to Jensy’s.

With the whole day before me, I decided I would walk into La Fortuna from my hotel. Along the way in I had spotted an Artesenia market for souvenirs and gifts. I was able to find some really lovely things for reasonable prices. It was super fun. In town I found a good Peruvian/Chinese restaurant where I gorged myself on chaufa (Peruvian style fried rice). It was a nice “town” day with a nightcap of hot springs.

Without a tour, I was able to “sleep in” until 6am and spend most of the morning sitting around watching the lawn, feeder and trees for birds. Holy Cow! I saw a gigantic bird - the Great Curasow! It is the size of a big turkey and has this curly Mohawk hairdo.I thought I had discovered a rare and beautiful bird; however, I found out that this “rare” bird likes to hang out in this area on lawns. I never take photos of birds. For this one, I made an exception.

After a leisurely morning, I went up to the Arenal Observatory Lodge. I never did get a look at the top of the volcano, but the trails on the property hosted some spectacularly pretty birds, and the place was very quiet. I treated myself to a non-Costa Rican meal and cabbed it home. Along the way, I spotted an honest to god ocelot. Absolutely stunning. Shiny coat and rippling with muscles. I didn’t get a long look, but I did get a good look.

The next morning, I went back to the El Silencio Reserve at the foot of the volcano with Nestor (my bird guide). The park itself opens at 8am, so at 6am, we had the place to ourselves. We spent the first hour not getting out of the parking lot. We identified (really he identified and I saw) 40 species; boom, boom, boom. The rest of the 4 hour tour was spent hunting down a good look at a toucan, oropendolas, a trogan, guans, and other myriad of bird species. It was a blast. After birding for last couple of days before the tour, I was binocular-ready and only missed one of the birds that he had seen. All in all, we spotted and heard 84 different birds and saw/identified about 75 of them.

I didn’t speak English but for a few words here and there during these 4 days. I’m sure I made a gazillion mistakes, but I was able to be understood and could even crack a few jokes. It was gratifying and made the experience so different. I could talk about the elections here, weather (of course), food, Urcraine, and Covid. It made the break that much more worthwhile.

While I’m having a wonderful time, going birding makes me miss Sheryl all the more. We connect every day (Thanks to WhatsApp) and can Zoom too. As you all know, it is not the same. One more week to go before we see each other!

Volcán Arenal y La Fortuna

Durante mi sabática de una semana, viajé al Volcán Arenal y el pueblo de La Fortuna. ¡Era asombroso! El lugar donde me quedaba tenía tres piscinas con aguas termales calientes para poner en remojo – que hacía todos los días. Aún en el sol caliente, estaba relejándose y no muy caliente. Se dice que es saludable. Lo diría así – especialidad por la salud de su mente.

Esta área es muy verde, no es similar que San Joaquín de Flores ahora. Mi primer día completo, había planeado tomar un tour con guía para ver los pájaros. Me desperté a las 4:50 de la mañana para tomar un taxi a las 5:30 de la mañana por un tour a las 6:00 de la mañana. Llegué a la reserva, y llovió como un diluvio. No era un senario ideal por mirando los pájaros o estando cómoda. Chateé con el guía y podía cambiar el tour por domingo en la mañana antes de mi viaje por camioneta a mi casa en San Joaquín de Flores con Jensy.

Con todo el día por delante, decidí que caminaría a La Fortuna de mi hotel. A lo largo de la calle, vi un mercado de artesanías para souvenirs y regalos. Podía encontrar unas cosas bonitas por precios razonables. Fue muy divertido. En el pueblo encontré un restaurante Peruana/China donde me comí mucho de chaufa (arroz frito en el estilo de Perú). Era un buen día del “pueblo” con una noche de aguas termales.

Sin un tour, pude dormir desde 6 de la mañana y pasé la mayoría de la mañana me relejé viendo el pasto, comedero, y los arboles por los pájaros. ¡Dios míos! Vi un ave gigantesca – ¡El Gran Curassow! Es el tamaño de un pavo grande y tiene un peinado rizado Mohawk. Pensaba que había descubierto un ave rara y bella; sin embargo, me di cuenta de que a esta ave rara le gusta quedarse en esta área en el césped. Nunca tomaba fotos de pájaros. Para este, hice una excepción.

Después de una mañana relejada, fui al Hotel Observatorio de Arenal. Nunca podía ver la capa del volcán, pero los senderos del hotel tenían unos pájaros espectáculos, y estaban tranquilo. Me regalé comida que no era de Costa Rica y tomé un taxi a mi hotel. ¡A lo largo, miré un ocelote verdadero! ¡Absolutamente increíble! Piel brillante y músculos grandes. No lo vi por mucho tiempo, pero lo vi muy bien.

La siguiente mañana, regresé a La Reserva del Silencio en el fondo del volcán con Néstor (mi guía de pájaros). El parque abre a las 8 de la mañana, entonces teníamos el lugar todo para nosotros mismos. Pasamos la primera hora no saliendo el estacionamiento. Identificamos (en serio, él identificó, y yo vi) 40 especias: ¡así, sin más! Por la siguiente tres horas del tour pasamos cazando para ver tucanes, oropéndolas, un trogon, guanes, y una gran variedad de especies de pájaros. Fue muy divertido. Después de pasar un par de días buscando y viendo a las aves después del tour, estuve lista con mis binoculares y solamente me perdí una de las aves que él había visto. En todo, vimos y oímos 84 diferentes tipos de pájaros y los vimos/identificamos casi 75.

No hablaba inglés excepto unas pocas palabras aquí y acá durante estos 4 días. Estoy seguro de que hice un millón de errores, pero podía estar entendido y podía decir unas bromas también. Era gratificante e hizo la experiencia muy diferente. Podía hablar sobre las elecciones aquí, el clima (por supuesto), la comida, Ucrania, y Covid. Hizo el descanso mucho más vale la pena.

Mientras estoy muy feliz aquí, buscando los pájaros me hace extrañar a Sheryl aún más. Hablamos todos los días (gracias a WhatsApp) y podemos hacer Zoom también. Como todos ustedes saben, no es el mismo. ¡Una semana más antes nos veremos!Weiterlesen
